La Maison works because it isn’t about what you might think it’s going to be about. Instead of it being about a stereotypical tyrant of a designer, it’ll be interesting to see two unexpected characters take over a fashion house and bring it into the 2020s.

This is not refined drama, despite its rarefied setting, but it is deceptively satisfying.

“La Maison” is more diversion than art, but what diversion. The ensemble soap is as bitchy and as backstabby as you could hope for, replete with bons mots and campy self-importance.
-
“La Maison” is frothier than its inevitable comparison to “Succession” will imply, and hardly avoids the inherent issues with communicating creative genius and massive investments on a limited budget. Yet when freed of the obligation to pay homage to bygone legends, “La Maison” can build a story around messy, bitchy, absurdly wealthy people.
