    The season isn't yet over, but something seems different this year.
    Every episode seems to have them tackling some modern issue, or trying something new and though i may learn to love it, at the moment, i'm constantly being brought out of the programme.
    The first episode seems to be making fun of shows that introduce a new character and try to carry on as if everything is the same, but    The season isn't yet over, but something seems different this year.

    The first episode seems to be making fun of shows that introduce a new character and try to carry on as if everything is the same, but it isn't working. This is a clever idea and on repeat viewing, i quite like how they wrote the lines slightly wrong, made jokes slightly not funny and sucked me into thinking 'oh no, my favourite show is doomed', then pulling the curtain back and saying, 'ahh, we're just making a point, we're still good!'
    Something like this is interesting and clever, but many episodes seem to have a point to make, like the female reboot of the wade boggs' episode, the twist on a clip episode, the Home Alone homage, the 'MeToo' episode, the bathroom equality episode... all of these alone would be alright, not the best episodes, but one of the 'okay, not bad' episodes of a season. But altogether, they destroy the flow of the season and make it appear similar to how a band will release a B sides and rarities, where okay, it's great to have the extra content, but really, it wasn't on the albums for a reason.

    I love always sunny and hope to learn to love this season, but at the moment, other than a couple of decent episodes, it's the worst of the 13 to me.    … Expand

    It's a flip-flop season, Every other episode I don't like and that's weird for me but the episodes I do like, I love. The Times Up episode and the Escape Room episodes are classic.

    The writing this season really took a hit with all these new writers that re-used a lot of old jokes from previous seasons. (The Waiter showing up several times annoyed me)
    I can appreciate them trying new episode formats etc as there have been really successful episodes that spring from those creative ideas (Being Frank, Charlie Work) but this season the new writers didn't know how to properly balance the creativity and there was a lot more misses than hits in this season. There are some good episodes this season and the season finale though feeling out of place in regarding to episode ordering is actually a really great touching yet different episode of IASIP.

    Another big reason I think this season feels so "off" is that is obviously needs Dennis as a full-time character in order to continue and I hope that the future seasons will all include Dennis because this show absolutely does not work without him. It bothered me a lot more than I am willing to admit that they had Mac acting like Dennis in the Super Bowl episodes this season. He felt like a stand-in placeholder spouting off Dennis lines at the gang that episode and don't even get me started on all those wasted cast cameos in that episode.

    PROS: The Gang Escapes, Time's Up For the Gang, The Gang Gets New Wheels, The Gang Solves the Bathroom Problem

    While it had one or two funny moments, this was overall a very disappointing series. Some of the characters seemed to lose their depth. The script writing was far less witty and seemed much more shallow, driving jokes home with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. And some episodes straight up had no jokes at all! The final blow was the writers shoe horning in political lectures, just in caseWhile it had one or two funny moments, this was overall a very disappointing series. Some of the characters seemed to lose their depth. The script writing was far less witty and seemed much more shallow, driving jokes home with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. And some episodes straight up had no jokes at all! The final blow was the writers shoe horning in political lectures, just in case you didn't realise how woke you aren't. The first 12 series are some of the best TV in the history of mankind. Series 13 is trash. Skip it.… Expand

    With Dennis apparently leaving to start a new life in North Dakota, and actor Glenn Howerton starring in a new TV show, the biggest question going into It's Always Sunny's 13th season was just how much of him we'd see. The simple answer to that question is not enough...

    The opening, largely Dennis free episode, marks a good start to the season but from then on it is a very mixed bag. When the gang are all together, such as in the episode "Times up for the Gang" the show comes pretty close to being as good as ever but characters such as The Waitress and Artemis, both funny as minor supporting characters, show that they're simply not capable of filling Dennis's shoes in the episodes where he's absent. Unless the entire gang are going to be together more often I'd rather this was the last we see of the show...    … Expand

    Probably the most inconsistent season of the show. Glenn's absence is very apparent and the steps that Sunny takes in a different direction are a bit clumsy. There are two genuinely fantastic episodes ("Time's Up", "Ladies Reboot") and an extremely touching finale, though, which makes me excited to see where the show goes next.

    I loved a lot of the seasons of this show but season 13 in particular is utterly pathetic, watching the writers and actors trying to work they way around OBVIOUSLY executive imposed race and gender quotas in the episodes is utterly pathetic. You can tell they managed to convince themselves "oh we can just fill the quota and make it like a joke, like what if we joke its an all femaleI loved a lot of the seasons of this show but season 13 in particular is utterly pathetic, watching the writers and actors trying to work they way around OBVIOUSLY executive imposed race and gender quotas in the episodes is utterly pathetic.     absolutely pathetic guys, you sold your souls, fooled no one and ruined your show. So much trash about men vs women and men do XXXXXX and women XXXXXX all so the cast can tip toe around obviously executive imposed quotas. Mindy Kaling has no place on this show, just yet another quota filler because FX execs feel bad about making a show with too many white people and too many "toxic" men

    Really poor season. The humor is almost entirely gone. New writers have been used that don't seem to understand the characters. Characters are involved in plots where in previous seasons they would've disregarded it and be sent off on some B-plot. There's a lot of "issue" type themes that normally would not be the central plot in classic sunny episodes but in this season are never left.Really poor season. The humor is almost entirely gone.     It seems they ran out of original ideas in the spirit of what motivates the gang, and also included side characters from previous seasons to distract from the stale scripts.

    This season can be summarized as "The Gang Sells Out." Some of the funniest and most original writing of all time has been replaced and/or "supplemented" with weak, "woke" writers like Danielle Schneider who all have a corporate-approved message they want to drive home. After all, Sunny's always tip-toed along the edge of what would now be considered "problematic" by a certain group ofThis season can be summarized as "The Gang Sells Out." Some of the funniest and most original writing of all time has been replaced and/or "supplemented" with weak, "woke" writers like Danielle Schneider who all have a corporate-approved message they want to drive home. After all, Sunny's always tip-toed along the edge of what would now be considered "problematic" by a certain group of people, so it makes sense that the trend of toning down what they perceive as insensitive would one day reach Sunny.

    To clarify, I'm politically a centrist. And it's true that Sunny has had some slightly political episodes in the past. "Charlie Goes America All Over Everyone's Ass" comes to mind. But ultimately, the joke was always on how inept and narcissistic all the characters are, and there was never a side implied to be "correct". Also, these episodes would be about one per season. Having a season entirely comprised of episodes like this, where a right and wrong side are clearly implied by the writers, feels patronizing, pedantic, and preachy.

    As a side note, the overly meta observational humor throughout the season is typical of United Citizens Brigade (UCB) comedians like Schneider and, while that may work in improv from time to time, it's just so lazy from a writing point of view. If you're going to make a female reboot of an episode, just have the balls to do it (pun intended). Don't mention it 40 times in the same episode ffs.

    I just hope next season can get back to comedy as the focus (which would require getting rid of these corporate-appointed writers, so it's unlikely).    … Expand

    Season 13 proves McElhenney, Day, and Howerton aren’t out of ideas; the formula they’ve established still works beautifully, and allows them to stretch as far as their creativity demands.

    Season 13 finally feels like there’s an actual world happening outside Paddy’s Pub, and—like several other terrible people in 2018—that world has something to say about The Gang. To be clear, this is a change for the better.
