    Be prepared for an unbearable deluge of inane dialogues, pompous and arrogant name dropping (Gilles Deleuze, Leonard Cohen, arcane and long forgotten pre-war film makers), self-indulgent scenes about French film making that say more about the navel-gazing and narrow-mindedness of Assayas than being really sardonic.
    This is the worst of French "cinema" and art-house film making.     This is the worst of French "cinema" and art-house film making. Stuck in a Godard/Nietzschean loop of constant self-reference, an aggravated state of neurosis and its pendant, narcissism. There is absolutely not a single beautiful scene in it.

    It’s probably not for everyone but once you tune into its whimsical rhythms, Irma Vep makes for a coolly captivating summer binge-watch. Witty, sophisticated, not always entirely successful, but rarely less than riveting.
