TheThis comic book is brought to life in an animated series (4 episodes released so far with another 6 coming). It revolves around a teenager (Steven Yeun) who’s just discovering the superpowers he inherited from his father (J.K. Simmons). The rest of the cast features notables like Sandra Oh, Zachary Quinto, Walton Goggins, Seth Rogan and Andrew Rannells (as the gay best friend). Since it’s animated, anything can be created, so it’s reliant on the writing and characters to make it interesting…and it mostly works. There’s also some creativity in the direction and details. Overall, it will be most enjoyed by folks who like this sort of thing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ugh. This show is a shadow of the comic. A lot of potential wasted.

First, the music is atrocious and, in addition to being bad, rarely fits the scene its in.

Second, the forced, awkward relationship with the Amber character (who doesn't exist in the comics) is tedious and uninteresting. She's nagging, **** and unsympathetic. Eventually, Mark reveals his superhero identity and she says she already knew and is STILL A HATEFUL **** The character is a bad, uninteresting diversity hire that shouldn't exist. The baseline story has tons of diversity in it and doesn't need a token black girl lead. Especially one this badly written and pervasive in the story.

Third, the animation is mediocre by modern standards.

Fourth, some of the voice actors aren't great or don't really embody the characters they play very well. Particularly glaring is Cecil's voice doesn't look like an older, grizzled man. the Rexplode voice actor is over the top and needs to take it back about 20%.

Those three things aside, the story is basically good and embodies what a modern, adult superhero story should be. Relationships, "realistic" fights between enemies, the good guys don't always win, the good guys aren't always the good guys... even when they are. Lots of nuance in the story.

Despite the budgeted animation, the story is compelling! Very satisfying as a comic fan.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of groan and eye-roll moments. Not one romantic couple are of the same race, making character's sexuality their defining traits, parents shielding their children of a completely different race, and casually dropping lines like "I hear this college's Social Justice department is good".

Any single or several of these scenarios are extremely OK but when it's every single scenario, it's forced and therefore, inauthentic and therefore DISENGAGING! KEEP YOUR AGENDA OUT OF ENTERTAINMENT! Or at least be subtle about it.

Does a spectacular back half of a first season make up for the boring as heck first half? Maybe. I was won over when the stories started getting a little more interesting. I was won over when the stories started getting a little more interesting. I read what felt like 100 issues of the comic back in the day and the show seems to be living up to the comics. Voice acting is pretty good. Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and JK Simmons are spectacular. Everyone else kinda blends together. The animation itself is good and mimics the comic book style quite well. I'm excited to see what another season brings, though I remember the quality of stories in the comics fell off a cliff at some point. There's absolutely nothing political at all about this show. If you like superhero stuff, this show is pretty good. Expand

So, most animation tries to hide the moments where the animation is poor through a variety of methods. In this show, there are quite a few moments where it is obvious that there is no animation whatsoever. So, I have only recently read the comics (if you are watching this show legally you have access to the first three volumes) and I don't really think the characters are good. At least not the ones in the school setting. Now I will admit that they might be getting better, but when I see the high school setting or anyone in the high school setting in a scene, I fast forward. The sad part is I can still follow everything that is happening by skipping the high school characters. So those characters are pointless and not likable enough to stick around to see their story.

When it is just the Greyson family, the govt agency, or something to do with (most of) the villains, it is pretty enjoyable. There is also the politics injection. That is one of the reason I just skip the high school stuff. It is pointless. Somewhat related, the comedy feels like that standard "comedy that kills the mood" thing the Whedon is so famous for. Really hope that doesn't kill the dramatic moment that is obviously going to happen. Overall, though, can't recommend this show. It is not bad, but there are better things out there... like so far the source material.

Pretty good series. Awesome gory action. Solid plot that is kind of dark. Only thing that bugs me is all the woke propaganda. It's a very enjoyable series non the less though. Highly recommended (when you watch it for free online).
