It revolves around a teenager (Steven Yeun) who’s just discovering the superpowers he inherited from his father (J.K. Simmons). The rest of the cast features notables like Sandra Oh, Zachary Quinto, Walton Goggins, Seth Rogan and Andrew Rannells (as the gay best friend). Since it’s animated, anything can be created, so it’s reliant on the writing and characters to make it interesting…and it mostly works. There’s also some creativity in the direction and details. Overall, it will be most enjoyed by folks who like this sort of thing. Expand

I thought it was just gonna be like justice league but then the next thing I know blood is splattering everywhere. The story is really good and the characters are well done. The only thing keeping me from rating it a nine or even a ten is the clear political agenda by the creators. The mistake that gets alot of people mad is that all too often in many movies and shows today is the pandering to certain groups through the creation of terrible characters whose only personality trait is belonging to one of these groups. Then the creators get mad when people don't like them and call them anti gay or trans. Invincible is not guilty of this at all and you can tell the characters were meant to be characters first and not "the gay guy" or "the devout feminist" in order to fill a quota. I let this slide cause they did it well but unfortunately they took it a step further by promoting social justice and 4th wave feminism several times throughout the show. It honestly doesn't matter if I agree with it or not I just don't want any kind of modern politics in shows I enjoy in my free time and I know many people don't watch an animated superhero show for the political messaging. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ugh. This show is a shadow of the comic. A lot of potential wasted.

First, the music is atrocious and, in addition to being bad, rarely fits the scene its in.

Second, the forced, awkward relationship with the Amber character (who doesn't exist in the comics) is tedious and uninteresting. She's nagging, **** and unsympathetic. Eventually, Mark reveals his superhero identity and she says she already knew and is STILL A HATEFUL **** The character is a bad, uninteresting diversity hire that shouldn't exist. The baseline story has tons of diversity in it and doesn't need a token black girl lead. Especially one this badly written and pervasive in the story.

Third, the animation is mediocre by modern standards.

Fourth, some of the voice actors aren't great or don't really embody the characters they play very well. Particularly glaring is Cecil's voice doesn't look like an older, grizzled man. the Rexplode voice actor is over the top and needs to take it back about 20%.

Those three things aside, the story is basically good and embodies what a modern, adult superhero story should be. Relationships, "realistic" fights between enemies, the good guys don't always win, the good guys aren't always the good guys... even when they are. Lots of nuance in the story.

Despite the budgeted animation, the story is compelling! Very satisfying as a comic fan.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of groan and eye-roll moments. Not one romantic couple are of the same race, making character's sexuality their defining traits, parents shielding their children of a completely different race, and casually dropping lines like "I hear this college's Social Justice department is good".

Any single or several of these scenarios are extremely OK but when it's every single scenario, it's forced and therefore, inauthentic and therefore DISENGAGING! KEEP YOUR AGENDA OUT OF ENTERTAINMENT! Or at least be subtle about it.

I was won over when the stories started getting a little more interesting. I read what felt like 100 issues of the comic back in the day and the show seems to be living up to the comics. Voice acting is pretty good. Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and JK Simmons are spectacular. Everyone else kinda blends together. The animation itself is good and mimics the comic book style quite well. I'm excited to see what another season brings, though I remember the quality of stories in the comics fell off a cliff at some point. There's absolutely nothing political at all about this show. So, most animation tries to hide the moments where the animation is poor through a variety of methods. In this show, there are quite a few moments where it is obvious that there is no animation whatsoever. So, I have only recently read the comics (if you are watching this show legally you have access to the first three volumes) and I don't really think the characters are good. At least not the ones in the school setting. Now I will admit that they might be getting better, but when I see the high school setting or anyone in the high school setting in a scene, I fast forward. The sad part is I can still follow everything that is happening by skipping the high school characters. So those characters are pointless and not likable enough to stick around to see their story.

When it is just the Greyson family, the govt agency, or something to do with (most of) the villains, it is pretty enjoyable. There is also the politics injection. That is one of the reason I just skip the high school stuff. It is pointless. Somewhat related, the comedy feels like that standard "comedy that kills the mood" thing the Whedon is so famous for. Really hope that doesn't kill the dramatic moment that is obviously going to happen. Overall, though, can't recommend this show. It is not bad, but there are better things out there... like so far the source material.

Terrible.

Another example of something committing the cardinal sin of entertainment. Being boring. Its hard to find a reason to root for these dollar store knock offs of DC comic heroes. The comic books do so much better of a job drawing the reader in than this show does entertaining its audience.

The trope of super heroes in high school is WELL worn territory and Invincible does very little to separate itself out from the tropes it leans on.

The sad thing is there is a LOT of talent in this production. The animation style is somewhere between DCAU & contemporary anime. The cast are skilled actors in their own right. The problem is that all the acting talent in the world cant make a dog of a script good.

Then there is THIS specific script. Dont expect to come in seeing something akin to an animated version of The Boys. While the first episode panders to that demographic it quickly abandons it in favor of something far more repulsive. Had they stuck to the source material a little more faithfully this show might not be that bad. There are a few genuinely good moments. Overall though the show feels bland and generic most of the time.

Then there is the elephant in the room. The woke sociopolitical commentary lecturing you inside your entertainment. This seriously has to stop. Its ruining everything it comes in contact with its toxic rhetorical ideology. Many of these characters are already panning out to be shells of their source material. Normalizing hate filled rhetoric like 4th wave feminism. It also seems like there is a set up in the works for a big reveal that greatly diverges from the source material that has yet to be unfolded. Purely speculation at this point and Its best left at that for now.

Had it not been for the hateful preaching the show would have came away with a run of the mill 5/10 OK, nothing great. Nothing you havent seen done MUCH better elsewhere. The toxic agenda being preached however knocks 4 points off the score leaving it at a very appropriate 1/10. Honestly the only thing that merits the 1 point is the voice acting. Everything else is either bland or terrible.

Now, that is based only on the first 3 episodes. If the remainder of the season reigns that in, Ill gladly edit the review and adjust my score accordingly. Otherwise, based on the first 3 episodes unless you are an avid fan of this comic book, just skip SuperWoke all together.

You've seen better and this is both boring AND preachy. That is the last thing anyone wants from their entertainment.

Original review:
For a show that tries to develop the idea that everything isn't necessarily good or bad and that there are grey areas, apparently being woke is good and a straight white male makes you spoiled, stupid and evil.

Now I'm not dinging the show more than a point or two for it's overstuffed political crap, but be warned, if you aren't a CNN watching bot, you might be bothered.

The first episode is actually an emotional roller-coaster. Things turn around amazingly fast at the end of it making you brace yourself for an exciting season. Unfortunately, you will be disappointed.

The problem is the rest of the episodes just sort of sputters along waiting for the finale that goes nowhere. Story threads are started and aren't resolved.

On the whole it is some good action scenes with everything in between a boring waste of time. Not recommended.

Hollywood blockbusters treat violence and destruction as grand spectacles without ever considering their ultimate effect on the world around them. Movies always show the people hero's save, but rarely those they failed too. As any EMS responder will tell you, that is not what it means to save someone. Invincible doesn't pull its punches in that sense, it shows you the collateral damage, the failures, and the perilous mistakes.

I can't help but respect it for that.

Watching the season which coves about the first 5 volumes of the comic, this has surpassed all expectations. My biggest positives are to the voice acting. The cast is amazing and their voice work is exceptional. Some actors play the character's age well. The other biggest positive is to the sound design. Each punch is given with the sound of explosiveness and can make you feel like bombs are going off. The animation works well won't the story. Be ready for a story that pays homage to comics of the past and finds way to go against comic book tropes. I love this and so will you. Better than I could ever have imagined Expand

And with Invincible (2021), that certainly seems to be the case. With multiple clips popping up all over the internet of 2 top invincible characters beating each other up, the show began to blow up in popularity. A lot of people, myself included, decided to give the show a watch. And we got a lot more than a few good action scenes. One of Amazon’s best new animated shows has got good romance, character development and philosophical conflict that will really make the audience think. And when it comes to reviews well, this show is pretty much invincible.

Now I could go and write you a 10-page English Essay on why Jeff Allen has made a killer story over just 8 episodes. So much happens. But I’d be depriving you of an amazing 6 hours and you’d hate me. So after this review, I implore you to go watch it. Let me give you the rap. 17-Year-old Mark Grayson is the son of the biggest superhero in the world, Omni-Man. Mark inherited powers from his father and has to learn to live up to his father’s expectations. Except that an episode or 2 in the audience will begin to learn that’s not at all what this show is about. As we see multiple twists throughout episodes, even as early as the first, we begin to see Omni-Man may not be the hero everyone thought. The story will grip you right from the start, with great characters, settings, conflicts, and heart wrenching moments.
Now, dumbass me clicked onto this TV show without reading any info. At first everything seemed normal. But as the audience will learn, this film has a lot of gore. But that’s actually a good thing. The suspense and tension often built up by these moments, plus the gore and violence of some of the characters really elevates the action. But if you’re not a gore person, definitely give this one a miss.

Now while the voice actors behind Mark Grayson and Debbie Grayson (Mark’s Mother) do a great job, I just gotta hand it to the voice behind Mark’s Dad otherwise known as J.K Simmons. That name might sound familiar, because this is also the man who plays J Jonah Jameson in the spiderman trilogy. I never realised that, but thinking back on it now, that makes a lot of sense. Jameson absolutely nails cold hearted Omni-Man, father of Mark Grayson. The constant struggle you will see within this man is a great tribute to both the script and the voice acting. Most voice actors hit the mark, although I wasn’t too sure about William Clockwell (Mark’s friend). A side character for sure, but a very annoying one. There was some opportunity for more conflict, especially considering how Mark ignored William for long periods of time. However, William seemed to just accept this. That’s probably one of my only complaints about this show however, with the casters nailing about everyone else. No shade to his voice actor, Gillian Jacobs. Your just in the wrong place at the wrong time pal. Invincible will start you off thinking you’re watching a generic free-to-air tv re-run TV show. However, watch a full episode and you’ll realise that this show goes way deeper. Way deeper philosophically, way deeper in terms of character development and way deeper in terms of lore. As someone who’s never read a comic book before, I might have to change that. Amazon’s Invincible is proof that converting a comic to the big screen can go well, and so far Amazon has created an invincible franchise.

There are not enough praises I can write about this show, Not only is this arguably Robert Kirkman's best comic work it's also now his best adapted work from comic to TV. It's really a hard pass for me to watch superhero films because of how superficial it all seems until this one. This is a breath of fresh air.

The animations are gorgeous and inspired by classic shows like X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman: The Animated Series. The adaption is faithful and fallows the comic. The main story line settles between issue 1 and 13, but there are also some side-plots, that happen later in the comics (till issue 40). The story will hit your heart, and the gore isn't unnecessary. This show is about responsibility and consequences. Expand

The characters are built up in a good manor as well with backstories and believable motivations. In terms of the animation it is good. I like the animation style and though it might not be for everybody I liked it. In terms of source accuracy its right on the mark though the comic it came from is somewhat obscure when compared to other comics so this might not be too important to most people. Overall I recommend that you watch this show, it will not disappoint you. Expand

I don't normally like superhero stuff but this was good. It's not just escapist fantasy **** There's a genuinely surprising story which subverts the whole genre in some pretty cool ways. It's not just escapist fantasy **** There's a genuinely surprising story which subverts the whole genre in some pretty cool ways. I'm impressed with how it handled the violence. The violence is hard to watch at times, but it's never meaningless or irresponsible. There are consequences to the things these superheroes do. If they make the wrong move, innocent people can get killed, and the show doesn't treat these civilians as extras or npcs. There's a real weight to the events of the story. Fantastic voice cast as well. Expand
