The best way to appreciate I Am The Night is as a mood piece. It doesn't contain a lot of plot and so the pacing seems sedate stretched over six hours. But what it lacks in story momentum it makes up for in atmosphere and a creeping tension. If you like LA noirs such as Chinatown, The Big Sleep and LA Confidential you will find a lot to enjoy. Expand

I almost gave up on it after the first couple of episodes, but stuck it out and was rewarded with some better episodes in the later half of the run. Chris Pine was solid throughout, as was the young lady playing Fauna Hodel. Overall, I think my issues with it were largely due to a lack of pace, but that was remedied somewhat in the final few eps.

I love this show! Chris Pine is sensational--great looking and such talent acting. India Eisley is also beautiful and creates such an air of intrigue. This series looks like something much more special than a free cable miniseries!

We thought the acting was good, and the story is based on an actual tragic event. The music reminded us of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Shows the underworld that infects Hollywood to this day.

In some ways, I Am the Night is too much--and not enough--of a good thing.

Jenkins’ direction allows space for Pine’s performance to muscle through any holes and shortcomings in “I Am the Night,” while Eisley’s grace and silence convey the threat of the Hodels’ menace. As it comes together, the final cut isn’t quite a bleeding-edge thriller so much as a visually sumptuous, slightly filthy noir attraction that doesn’t necessarily shed outrageous new light on a vintage mystery. But it succeeds in elevating the best in the talent resurrecting a piece of it.

Unfortunately, though Eisley is affecting, Fauna’s story feels like it’s skimmed over. The racial elements are intriguing. ... But, like Fauna’s character, this aspect of the tale is underdeveloped. Pine, who’s also an executive producer, has more success with Jay, giving a contemporary spin to a film noir-style antihero.
