We don't care about any of these people! Who even are they? We barely even know their names and you expect us to care about them or their lame medieval soap opera drama? And cheap shock value "awesome" scenes aren't enough to carry a show. Come on!

Utterly forgettable and soulless. A show just for the sake of a show.

A year or two from now nobody will even remember this show ever existed.

So naturally, compared to that steaming pile of garbage, this one might even be considered as passable. But do not be fooled by this deception, House of the Dragon is a boring show, with poorly written characters (a couple of exceptions here), needlessly deviating from the source material. The dialogues are simply abysmal. Tried watching it when it was released last year and my first impressions were it is a solid "meh". Now that I've seen the season, I can confirm it is. Leagues below GOT. Expand

A great series that rescues the true meaning of the original story. Unlike GOT 7 and 8, this one is aimed at making a good sense and leaving viewers anxiously waiting for the next seasons. For me one of the best series of the year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This series exceeded all my expectations. It is the best. Rather, in relation to what I prefer about Game of Thrones, the CGI should be improved a little because in some scenes there are errors. Either in terms of story, script, application, music, and costumes. Literally, even Game of Thrones cannot appreciate this quality. Expand

I watched the GOT seasons consecutively and was mildly disappointed with the ending, but the end of this season had me fiending for more. The whole flaw about season 1 of house of the dragons were the time jumps. When confused about a show I usually look up the episode and read the synopsis up to where I was at, but without the internet I would’ve been confused from the constant time jumps. Great storytelling and matches up to some of the better game of thrones seasons. Expand

I don't know the books for this at all but the series is doing a great job of presenting the world and characters. In the best way possible, politics and war feel personal.

Really eager to see where this goes. I have to commend the art design, which despite a few wonky CG moments has provided a few legitimate "Wow!"s from me.

Woke sh!t, unnecessary changes that make no sense, boring acting, boring dialogue, destruction of immersion by adding blacks and chinese where they don't belong. Another story butchered.

At every moment you are aware that these are just actors in costumes on a set somewhere in western Europe. You never feel like this is a living, breathing fantasy world. Everything about this show feels artificial and improvised.

Watch if you literally have nothing else at all to do in your life. Skip otherwise and spare yourself this abomination.

There are some pretty good actors and the p[roduction value is high. However that can not make up for the poor, unimaginative and plainly boring story. There are a few dragons flying around but that's as close as it gets to fantasy. It's a plain old "princess has to marry" story. and it's not even told particularly well...I'm going to try to watch the whole season but I might not bee able to keep my eyes open...

There is no point that this transpires in the world of game of thrones except for more viewership. It's 100% riding on the cloak of GOT. The choice of timeline, when the Targaryens ruled, was a good & interesting pick I thought at first... but then where the f@#k are the dragons?! I don't have a hard on for dragons but their lack of presence is very weird, to put it mildly, during a Targaryen dynasty. They speak of dragons now and then, bolstering how the creatures has provided them an unchallanged seat of power, yet they're barely ever shown & even less interacted with. Are dragons not the most important asset you have?! Why do they feel like nothing more than a horse to them?! Don't Targaryens share this super special bond with their dragons?

On top of the "bolstering of their dragon power" the show is constantly pushing it's narrative direction behind the existence of a threat towards the Targaryen rule that just don't hold any water. All so called issues many, many times should & could just be answered with "who cares, we have dragons". There is no entertainment behind none issues. Skip this one

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nothing happens. Bad writing and acting. They try so hard to use “old” English to sound authentic but they just sound like actors trying to pretend because of the bad writing. Cinematography is extremely bad making every scene feel goofy. No character has any clear goal of what he/she wants, but not in a good way like little finger with his mystique, but instead just makes the show feel slow and non eventful. They have several time skips in the show for no reason. Just make a decision already of what and when you want to tell your story. There was no point in showing me any of this extra stuff since nothing happens. The good part of the old game of thrones had several characters that you followed that had their own goals that would sometimes align or clash with other characters. This made the show feel more rich in lore, characters, cities, history etc. Whereas in this show you follow one perspective that has no goal other than “I want to be queen”. Why do you want to be queen? What are YOU gonna do when you are queen that you cannot do right now? Why not make me feel and cheer for a character? Or even fear for what would happen if another character becomes king/queen. I’m obviously not arguing for forcing the show to have grand battles and extreme plot twists all the time. You need to build up to these events to make them meaningful of course. But what a good show instead would do is to have several plot lines to follow. In this way it’s okey if one plot line currently is slow/eventless because you will then have another plot line that is more interesting. This way you can have your build up but at the same time make sure the viewer still enjoys the show. Besides there are good and bad ways of building up to the reveal. For instance why not make me wonder about something? Nothing has happened and therefore I have no questions or guesses about what will happen. I do not know and I do not care about anything here. They could kill of every character and it would not change anything about the show when it comes to plot at all. If you have seen the show try to summarize the show for someone who hasn’t seen it and you will both realize that you have nothing to talk about.

The only reason why some people enjoy this show is because compared to the Amazon’s lord of the rings show, this show is apparently better which isn’t saying much more than I’m really glad I haven’t seen that other show then.

For a show that has dragon in its name they sure have boring dragons. I still have no idea what they really do. Are they powerful? Are they just like a large horse? They had an enemy that had tiny crabs on its side and hid in caves and that was apparently a tough battle for the dragons? You can tell the the show really struggles to find problems for the plot since everything could pretty much be solved with “well we could send a dragon”. But what they do instead is to keep everything very vague like “we are going to loose everything if we loose to the crab people!”. How? And loose what? Your dragons? Political support? Why bother, just force them with your dragons like you did to get to power in the first place. How can “hiding in caves” be a powerful strategy? Why not just besiege the cave await their starvation like they did with cities in previous battles? Explain to the viewer how “crab peoples” strategy is so powerful and not by just saying “they are powerful” make me believe and understand how so. The clothes, make up and styling is very inconsistent. The old show focused on the show feeling and looking more realistic with some exceptions to magical beings but still managed to bland these together nicely. I could believe these different styles would live in the same universe. In this show they match different styles horribly all the time. This constantly takes you out of the story since you are constantly reminded about this being an incoherent mess when it comes to character styles. They do not fit together at all which makes it all feel very fake all the time. Some characters feel more realistic, others look like they are wearing a gigantic wig. Some people have haircuts that look more medieval while others have clearly managed to get their hair done by a Japanese final fantasy hair and make up team… Is this an anime? A video game? Or should it feel more like a realistic medieval setting?

Boring ridiculous but still better than GoT s8, a 0/10

I was very apprehensive because of how appalling the final GoT was, but I was pleasantly surprised. At some times, I am on the edge of my seat because the cliffhangers are very present in this show. The show includes very strong, powerful women and the acting from everyone is amazing. In addition, the CGI is fantastic. Sometimes, you truly feel like you are in the show. The storyline is compelling and the characters, for the most part, have a lot of depth to them. This is the best GoT has been in a long time. Hopefully, the second season is worth waiting for. Expand

Honestly, has every film maker lost the ability to film dark/night scenes? I don't care if the lighting realistic, I want to see what the hell is going on. The characters are mostly transparent, and they switch actresses for one of the characters during a 10 year timeline jump while keeping everyone else the same in such a sloppy way I thought she was an entirely new character until someone said her name also, ithe show offers nothing new, it's mediocre at best and is best skipped, or at least used as background noise while you do something more interesting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do I even begin? Production level, dialogues, flat characters, stupidest time skip to a promising plot, struggles that aren't relatable nor do they make you attached to the characters, lack of any planning and proper plotting, shocking people with things that add nothing the plot?

It's hard to say and the 5000 character limit won't allow to go into the detail of it all. I thought that after the flop of last season of GoT nothing could set the bar lower. I wish I was wrong.

Years later the whispers of a new prequel show detailing another book in the universe made fans nervously optimistic, but well and rightly on guard. Thankfully, House of the Dragon's inaugural outing does plenty to sooth those nervous feathers and return HBO's modern flagship franchise back into the limelight. While slightly slow to start, each episode is gripping, tense, and enjoyable. The script is expertly handled and follows the source material well. The additions of excellent CGI and top flight acting, especially Paddy Considine's King Viserys who should deservedly get an Emmy nomination, enthralled me from start to finish. Drawbacks for some have included a jarring shift in the actors when their characters age, a few too many graphic birthing scenes, and the overall pacing of the first season. I tend to lean away from these however and give House of the Dragon much deserved benefits of the doubt. With fervor, I eagerly await the next season after such a strong start. Expand

What a brilliant entrance to this spin-off. The atmosphere, the tention, the actors and actresses, all the detail going into the sets and costumes are masterclass.

I cant believe we got this piece of Art after the fail of season 8 game of thrones. They redeemed themselves for me and I super excited for the next season. Episode 8 is my absolute favorite and on of the best episodes ever made in this "universe". Viserys nailed it and we got so many typical game of thrones moments, especially excellent writing. There were some minor downfalls, especially in Episode 9. Here and there some timejumps, but for me, they integrated that very well. I just wanted to get some pieces told by the series.

All in all wonderful made and nearly perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably, it is the best fantasy TV-show of this year. And definitely a much better show than you would expect to see in J. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe after the disastrous last two seasons of Game of Thrones. Yes, yes, there has been a rehab of the universe since seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones. We remember how these seasons contained incredibly stupid script moves, stupid dialogues, unrealistic battle scenes, there was a simplification of the characters ... really ... everything was done to destroy the best fantasy project (since the original Lord of the Rings trilogy).

And here we get the House of the Dragon. Initially, expectations were very low, due to the poor GoT ending. Moreover, the material of J.R.R. Martin book, written in the form of annalistic chronicles, is very specific and requires real additional processing. It takes effort to create living images, to write all the dialogues. If, without the help of Martin, two poor fellows Benioff and Weiss simply merged the scenario, lowering everything to the level of a kindergarten, then here (unexpectedly) the dialogues, twists, and characters look decent. For the character of Viserys Targaryen and the performance of the actor, I can raise the score by a point. The outlined problem of succession to the throne, the nature of the relationship between the characters, the dialogues - all this is created at a good level. Yes, the series starts slowly. The pace of the story is low, but there are no completely empty scenes that the GoT script abounded from the fifth season onwards.

Of course, it wasn't without drawbacks. First, it's the quality of the action. There is not enough of him in the series and ... thank for that. Since it's a real trouble with the action. The unrealistic behavior of a wild boar on the hunt causes laughter, Deamon dodging dozens of arrows causes tears. It would be better if everything remained within the framework of palace intrigues. Well, let the dragons fly back and forth, as additional diplomatic arguments.

With scenes which only reasons for existing is to look cool. Character decisions seeming idiotic and contradictory to their decisions in previous episodes. A big let down for the finale of a season that started brilliantly. But still an amazing show. Daemon stills every scene he is in and doesn’t have a single poor moment. And the King is the morally good character the audience can cheer for that was lacking in Game Of Thrones. I’m just extremely worried about the future seasons. Right now the show is sitting at GoT season 5 quality, I’d be fine if it drops to a season 6 GoT quality in the next 3 seasons. But there’s a lot of time and a lot of good things to ruin, I fear we might be getting a repeat of GoT season 8 in our future. Expand

In my eyes, that's an incredible achievement, because I never expected to care about this franchise again after the end of Game of Thrones.

Season 1 spends a lot of time establishing characters, their relationships and allegiances and motivations, and the state of Westeros during that time-period. And some viewers may find that to be slow, or even a little boring. Personally though, I really loved this. With such a character-centered conflict, the Dance of the Dragons, it's essential to understand the context of the war fully. And I'm certain that will make the conflict itself - in future seasons - much more enjoyable and emotional.

The show's writing does slightly falter at times, but overall, it's written very consistently good. The characters are all varied and interesting to watch, and the inclusion of so many dragons always keeps things exciting. I haven't found any issues with the CGI or set pieces either; it's clear how big the budget is for this series.

Overall, Season 1 of House of the Dragon easily deserves a 9/10 in my eyes. It's a great show, and a brilliant set-up for much more action-packed seasons ahead. I feel like I care about all the characters now, on either side of the battle, because of the time taken to establish them all here. And I genuinely feel like that will lead to greatness in the coming seasons.

It bugged me that it's somewhat blunt in its allegory of patriarchy, repeating too much the women's ineligibility for the throne, while the existence of non-consort queens was in fact not that rare in the Middle-Ages. It has also diverted in some things from the book, trying to be more dramatic, but in the attempt it ended up a bit childish, so not sure adults will be as hooked as they were with GoT.
Whether because of the limited scope, or because the book is not as fleshed out as the previous, it ends up not reaching the standard GoT created, yet it is still entertaining.
The score, the artistic direction, and the CGI (dragons included), and especially the costumes, are all great.

There are too many time jumps and characters not given enough time to mature on screen. Any growth or skill wielded by them is gained off screen. A female centric show which seeks to empower but not glamorize female suffering. Expect this show to be equally as androgynistic as Game of Thrones was misogynistic. If Game of Thrones was a show seen through the male gaze, House of the Dragon is a show seen through the female gaze. We live in the age of polarization, and gender politics is as polarized of a subset as you will find. The two shows complement each other greatly in this regard.

The show focuses on the female experience set in the fantasy universe of GoT. It shows female suffering at the hands of their biology, the men around them, and at the hands of other females. Childbirth, reproductive rights, the patriarchal ideal of female purity, and gender inequality are at the forefront. It definitely is a show centered around gender politics with a strong feminist message. It is somewhat ironic that it fails miserably at the Bechdel Test.

I think the show succeeds at being entertaining at parts, even offering a somewhat sympathetic view of toxic masculinity and how modern feminism may mesh with and even reconcile with misogyny and traditional masculinity. In the end though there is a definite largess of male characters with irredeemable? character flaws (pedophilia, rapists, sadists, absenteeism) while female characters have some very redeemable flaws (maternal love, filial duty, extra marital romance) which are often attributed to men who manipulate or control them. It's a show with very contemporary sensibilities. Women are shown to be powerful, while their deepest flaws are attributed to men or their loyalties to men. Men who are shown in the most positive light are subservient to women. Men who are in positions of power are deeply and irredeemably flawed.

I find this lack of balance both contemporary and yet tired. While it serves to make a very small number of female characters interesting, it turns the remainder of the expansive cast into mere set dressing and thus the whole setup seems very artificial. In short, a worthy, equal and opposite response to Game of Thrones. Newton's Third Law reigns supreme.

They forgot to add any good guys.

Seriously, every single character in this show is a horrible person one way or another. Why care about one outcome over another when any option results in just another absolute basket case on the Iron Throne? Any time when you think there might be someone with a moral compass on the show, they brutally murder someone for no reason.

But even if that's the point, the narrative is so disjointed, it's impossible to even tell who the show itself is asking the audience to root for. It's just a bunch of terrible people doing awful things for reasons that aren't always clear. And even worse, it's painfully predictable. I don't mean I know the outcome of the show or specific plot points, but within any given scene you can almost always bet that, given the choice, a character will do something to screw over—or perhaps even kill—another character. Just cuz.

And for comparison, in the original Game of Thrones series, we saw characters with noble qualities put into terrible situations we wanted to see them overcome. Or perhaps the terrible situations would cause them to earn those noble qualities. Here, it's just awful people being awful and wanting to be King/Queen. They can't even give reasons WHY they want to rule. The show just assumes that everyone's goal in life is to be the King. Not to make the world a better place, or to advance society in any way. It's just the thing to want. Likely so they can kill more people.

As a book reader and a fan of the original show, I can't begin to figure out what people don't like. Maybe just residual anger at how the original ended? Outside of a few slow episodes at the start, its all here and it's all mostly good.

Brutal, amazing. Better than Game Of Thrones, more focused in less characters & has no fillers. If anything, there's too many time jumps.
