The biggest knock on it is that it's another prequel in a sea of prequels coming out right now.

Fewer random deaths. More dragons, more knights in one on one combat. Expand

Years later the whispers of a new prequel show detailing another book in the universe made fans nervously optimistic, but well and rightly on guard. Thankfully, House of the Dragon's inaugural outing does plenty to sooth those nervous feathers and return HBO's modern flagship franchise back into the limelight. While slightly slow to start, each episode is gripping, tense, and enjoyable. The script is expertly handled and follows the source material well. The additions of excellent CGI and top flight acting, especially Paddy Considine's King Viserys who should deservedly get an Emmy nomination, enthralled me from start to finish. Drawbacks for some have included a jarring shift in the actors when their characters age, a few too many graphic birthing scenes, and the overall pacing of the first season. I tend to lean away from these however and give House of the Dragon much deserved benefits of the doubt. With fervor, I eagerly await the next season after such a strong start. Expand

Great dialogue, great acting, intruging conflicts, great dynamics and chemistry between characters. Good CGI. The character motivations make sense. You get to see more dragons, targayen as well as some of the ancient houses not in Game of thrones like hightowers, valyrons, strongs, etc.) The only negatives i can think of is pacing issues ( sometimes it spent too much time on one scene) and the fact that there are yearly time jumps between episodes. Other than that I recommend it. As this show gets more seasons only time will tell if this show will be on the level of game of thrones at its peak. Expand

The first season is not as good as season 4 of GoT but is about as good as Season 2 in my opinion. I have never read the books, so my review will solely rely on the show through the first 6 episodes. I see a lot of reviews with low scores due to "wokeness." As someone who is opposed to woke politics being needlessly injected into entertainment, I am surprised to see so many people saying this series is woke because I have not noticed any modern political agendas in this series, and at no point have I felt like I was being lectured by the writers. Similar to the first 4-5 seasons of GoT, this series almost solely focuses on the politics of Westeros and Esteros, and the politics of the world are what made GoT and make this series so enjoyable. The dialogue and acting are excellent. So far, the first 5 episodes felt like they were utilized to set up big events later in the season. The fighting scene was great, and the dragons look very cool too. I recommend ignoring those labeling this show as "woke" and watching this series. I can tell George was heavily involved, because the story is well-crafted and does not pull any punches! Expand

As someone who loves fantasy, this show is nice refreshment to the genre. The plot is interesting, it has development, things are set in motion. It is also what one can expect from a show set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, brutal, unforgiving, honest in what it wants to tell the audience. The characters are gray, some more than others, they all have good sides and flaws, and their development is really interesting to follow.

So far it is great and I hope it will continue to do so.

Not in the least that every male character is either trying to simp his way into power, or is a toxic sociopath wanting to murder, steal and lie his way to the top. There is a level of incompetence here that suggests that the writers hate men, despite - in some cases - being them.

By contrast, all the female characters are powerful, charismatic and constantly fighting against the male gaze, the demands of the patriarchy, and plots by those women foolish enough to actually fall in love with a man.

What IS done well, is the political intrigue, most of the costumes, the CG for the dragons, and the scenery.

Overall, I'm interesting to see where this goes, and am willing to give it a chance to develop. In most aspects it covers the lore pretty well, for the most part maintaining the narrative integrity of the universe in which it is set.

Writers really need to start developing more interesting male characters. Completely sick of the trope that we are all sociopathic, self-serving, women haters unless we can control them - in which case they become tolerable.

It bugged me that it's somewhat blunt in its allegory of patriarchy, repeating too much the women's ineligibility for the throne, while the existence of non-consort queens was in fact not that rare in the Middle-Ages. It has also diverted in some things from the book, trying to be more dramatic, but in the attempt it ended up a bit childish, so not sure adults will be as hooked as they were with GoT.
Whether because of the limited scope, or because the book is not as fleshed out as the previous, it ends up not reaching the standard GoT created, yet it is still entertaining.
The score, the artistic direction, and the CGI (dragons included), and especially the costumes, are all great.

With scenes which only reasons for existing is to look cool. Character decisions seeming idiotic and contradictory to their decisions in previous episodes. A big let down for the finale of a season that started brilliantly. But still an amazing show. Daemon stills every scene he is in and doesn’t have a single poor moment. And the King is the morally good character the audience can cheer for that was lacking in Game Of Thrones. I’m just extremely worried about the future seasons. Right now the show is sitting at GoT season 5 quality, I’d be fine if it drops to a season 6 GoT quality in the next 3 seasons. But there’s a lot of time and a lot of good things to ruin, I fear we might be getting a repeat of GoT season 8 in our future. Expand

So far there are 3 race swapped Targaryens. The problem with these characters are not the colour of their skin it's their acting ability. When you need to tick a box and choose people for diversity you then limit your pool of actors you can choose from. We have seen poor acting time and time again when they are just a tick box choice. We need to move on from this and choose the best person for the job regardless of skin colour. Needing more diversity is a twitter trend by a bunch of weirdos who just want to argue and create conflict. Onto the positives. Compared to the rings of power House of dragon succeeds in many areas. It has some really good casting and likeable characters. Matt Smith as Daeman is the main standout for me. He is fantastic. Milly Alcock who I have never heard of before is another standout. Fabian Frankel as Sir Criston is a good side character. There is actual character development in play here. Compared to rings of power the writing is night and day. It's engaging and makes you want to keep watching. The show is not perfect but it has suprised me and I will happily continue watching Expand

Forget about Rings of Power, this is the show you want to see.

I'll be honest. I had some reservations about how well would House of the Dragon be capable to deliver the world of George R. R. Martin. And deliver it does.

Not only does it feel like Game of Thrones, but the cast is for the most part very well chosen. With most actors and actresses, delivering solid performances and being capable of pulling us into their world, their lives, their intrigues, their agendas. But above all making the viewer care about those characters.

Not that many shows can claim to be able to do that. But this one can. And it's good because after season 8 of Game of Thrones, the story needed to be focused on something else that makes us forget about that season.

And although the fall of House Targaryen is something we know it's going to happen no matter what, at least the show is being done well enough that even knowing that, doesn't really matter. It's a show that has proven to have what it takes to be seen and appreciated.

My only hope right now is that the success doesn't go to their heads, and they start making rookie mistakes. Game of Thrones lost the race in the last meters of the race, so I really hope that House of the Dragon doesn't make the same mistake.

Other than that three episodes in, and this show has come out strong and with enough fire to burn long and wide, instead of burning bright and fading just as fast.

This show is definitely a must see. And those that don't watch it will only lose.

Honestly, has every film maker lost the ability to film dark/night scenes? I don't care if the lighting realistic, I want to see what the hell is going on. The characters are mostly transparent, and they switch actresses for one of the characters during a 10 year timeline jump while keeping everyone else the same in such a sloppy way I thought she was an entirely new character until someone said her name also, ithe show offers nothing new, it's mediocre at best and is best skipped, or at least used as background noise while you do something more interesting. A female centric show which seeks to empower but not glamorize female suffering. Expect this show to be equally as androgynistic as Game of Thrones was misogynistic. If Game of Thrones was a show seen through the male gaze, House of the Dragon is a show seen through the female gaze. We live in the age of polarization, and gender politics is as polarized of a subset as you will find. The two shows complement each other greatly in this regard.

The show focuses on the female experience set in the fantasy universe of GoT. It shows female suffering at the hands of their biology, the men around them, and at the hands of other females. Childbirth, reproductive rights, the patriarchal ideal of female purity, and gender inequality are at the forefront. It definitely is a show centered around gender politics with a strong feminist message. It is somewhat ironic that it fails miserably at the Bechdel Test.

I think the show succeeds at being entertaining at parts, even offering a somewhat sympathetic view of toxic masculinity and how modern feminism may mesh with and even reconcile with misogyny and traditional masculinity. In the end though there is a definite largess of male characters with irredeemable? character flaws (pedophilia, rapists, sadists, absenteeism) while female characters have some very redeemable flaws (maternal love, filial duty, extra marital romance) which are often attributed to men who manipulate or control them. It's a show with very contemporary sensibilities. Women are shown to be powerful, while their deepest flaws are attributed to men or their loyalties to men. Men who are shown in the most positive light are subservient to women. Men who are in positions of power are deeply and irredeemably flawed.

I find this lack of balance both contemporary and yet tired. While it serves to make a very small number of female characters interesting, it turns the remainder of the expansive cast into mere set dressing and thus the whole setup seems very artificial. In short, a worthy, equal and opposite response to Game of Thrones. Newton's Third Law reigns supreme.

There are some pretty good actors and the p[roduction value is high. However that can not make up for the poor, unimaginative and plainly boring story. There are a few dragons flying around but that's as close as it gets to fantasy. It's a plain old "princess has to marry" story. and it's not even told particularly well...I'm going to try to watch the whole season but I might not bee able to keep my eyes open...

There are too many time jumps and characters not given enough time to mature on screen. Any growth or skill wielded by them is gained off screen. Everyone knows actions speak louder than words, so it is unfortunate the show has been all talk for the first series. The only major positive at present is the series has just begun, giving it plenty of time to grow and impress. Expand

They forgot to add any good guys.

Seriously, every single character in this show is a horrible person one way or another. Why care about one outcome over another when any option results in just another absolute basket case on the Iron Throne? Any time when you think there might be someone with a moral compass on the show, they brutally murder someone for no reason.

But even if that's the point, the narrative is so disjointed, it's impossible to even tell who the show itself is asking the audience to root for. It's just a bunch of terrible people doing awful things for reasons that aren't always clear. And even worse, it's painfully predictable. I don't mean I know the outcome of the show or specific plot points, but within any given scene you can almost always bet that, given the choice, a character will do something to screw over—or perhaps even kill—another character. Just cuz.

And for comparison, in the original Game of Thrones series, we saw characters with noble qualities put into terrible situations we wanted to see them overcome. Or perhaps the terrible situations would cause them to earn those noble qualities. Here, it's just awful people being awful and wanting to be King/Queen. They can't even give reasons WHY they want to rule. The show just assumes that everyone's goal in life is to be the King. Not to make the world a better place, or to advance society in any way. It's just the thing to want. Likely so they can kill more people.

Itlost me completely during the first major battle scene (which was weirdly promoted as being awesome by shills). The main character ambushes an entire army which was winning a war by hiding in a cave. If that sentence sound wildly stupid to you then don't watch the show. If that battle description doesn't turn you off, let me go on. There is simply not enough depth for the show to hold together. In game of thrones, incest was a minor side note, it was the impotice for a cliffhanger. In this show it is the central focus of 20 minutes of intrigue. It's shallow trash. Expand

I think the major issues with the series are it is not as Epic as GoT. There is no suspense, there is no real villain, there is only one point of view, what happened to multiple view points and characters. It runs like a court theater drama, with story focused on king and his immediate family. It is unbelievably scaled down watered down version of GoT. It is clearly done with much smaller budget. I dont think we will see the 2nd season. GRR Martin is a lazy guy, who didnt finish GoT, naturally he has no time to write a proper novel for this timeline, let alone a script to base it on a novel. On top of this, none of the characters are likable or interesting so far. HBO has to understand they cannot recrate GoT with a documentary mini series style tv series, this thing is closer to British Royal theater than it is related to GoT. unfortunately so far it is a hard pass. Lost cause really as we all know how this story ends.

9/13 Update: There are 458 votes for this show vs 1721 votes for rings of power. Approximately 1500 more negative votes and excess votes indicates that show is getting heavy review bombing and artificially inflated. Given that two shows are equally popular. i think house of dragon is a an unfortunate failure as a fantasy show, slowly derailing towards royal family soap opera drama. 4th episode was a disgrace as nothing but a soft por n, so low this show got now. i have lost hope really dropping score

Production level, dialogues, flat characters, stupidest time skip to a promising plot, struggles that aren't relatable nor do they make you attached to the characters, lack of any planning and proper plotting, shocking people with things that add nothing the plot?

It's hard to say and the 5000 character limit won't allow to go into the detail of it all. I thought that after the flop of last season of GoT nothing could set the bar lower. I wish I was wrong.

To be honest, I am watching it, because I want to be back in the world of Westeros. I can't speak for anyone else. But, when I rewatch season 1 of Game of Thrones, I see a significant difference in Quality writing and acting.

One would think, that the new series would at least, up their level of writing and acting. But, comparing both season 1 of Game of Thrones with what I see from season 1 of House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones is far superior.

I am not a fantasy genre fan. I am just a casual watcher, who likes to watch good shows and movies. So far, I have yet to see anything from House of the Dragon, that would suggest that it's better than Game of Thrones. In any way.

I am not trying to bad-mouth the series. This is not my intention. I am making an observation.

I am quite sure, that there are people who love what they are seeing, from House of the Dragon. To each his own.

Again. I will watch House of the Dragon, because I enjoy the world of Westeros. Hopefully, HBO has more spinoffs coming out soon. But, House of the Dragon is OK. It's not GREAT.

Ig it were me id put a gag order on all the people involved until the show was over I guarantee you'll retain more viewers by just shutting up and doing your job NO ONE is interested in the show runners political thoughts or maybe it's just me but I refuse to support a show that insults its own audience!! None of the characters is likeable. I don't care if any of them lives or dies on episode 4...

I will give credit to some of the actors, editors and visual effect crew who must have had a very difficult time putting this together.

The actors clearly had a difficult script and plot to work with and look like they genuinely tried their best. The screenwriting, direction, scripting and plot are laughable at best. The visual effects vary dramatically between scenes and episodes, with some being stunning and immersive and others appearing more like a first draft edit. I'm not a GoT fanatic yet this was a let down.

Seems everything is rushed. Lots of gaps. Characters are not likable just mean. No one to cheer for.

Terrible show, moves to fast and should not be classed as a Fantasy, more like a action series in a medival setting with dragons

I have seen now 7 episodes and if I wouldn´t watch it with other persons I wouldn´t have continued it. They have dragons but the show is clearly lacking any wit and magic.

Awful. More race swapping woke stuff. Honestly, not that upset though as after Game of Thrones Season 8 I kind of expected this to not be very good. HBO canceled.

I managed to watch 3 episodes. Totally disappointed after reading books. Crap full of political correctness same as all new productions.

Los hijos de los protagonistas son todos idiotas y son representados por actores que no se parecen en nada. Los saltos temporales son tan ridículos como arbitrarios. El único capitulo realmente bueno es el último. El resto... Patético Expand
