A great series that rescues the true meaning of the original story. Unlike GOT 7 and 8, this one is aimed at making a good sense and leaving viewers anxiously waiting for the next seasons. For me one of the best series of the year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This series exceeded all my expectations. It is the best. Rather, in relation to what I prefer about Game of Thrones, the CGI should be improved a little because in some scenes there are errors. Either in terms of story, script, application, music, and costumes. Literally, even Game of Thrones cannot appreciate this quality. Expand

I watched the GOT seasons consecutively and was mildly disappointed with the ending, but the end of this season had me fiending for more. The whole flaw about season 1 of house of the dragons were the time jumps. When confused about a show I usually look up the episode and read the synopsis up to where I was at, but without the internet I would’ve been confused from the constant time jumps. Great storytelling and matches up to some of the better game of thrones seasons. Expand

As someone who started disliking GoT way back in season 4, I had little interest in this at all. Word of mouth got me to check it out, and after three episodes I'm totally hooked. I don't know the books for this at all but the series is doing a great job of presenting the world and characters. In the best way possible, politics and war feel personal.

Really eager to see where this goes. I have to commend the art design, which despite a few wonky CG moments has provided a few legitimate "Wow!"s from me.

I was very apprehensive because of how appalling the final GoT was, but I was pleasantly surprised. At some times, I am on the edge of my seat because the cliffhangers are very present in this show. The show includes very strong, powerful women and the acting from everyone is amazing. In addition, the CGI is fantastic. Sometimes, you truly feel like you are in the show. The storyline is compelling and the characters, for the most part, have a lot of depth to them. This is the best GoT has been in a long time. Hopefully, the second season is worth waiting for. Expand

Years later the whispers of a new prequel show detailing another book in the universe made fans nervously optimistic, but well and rightly on guard. Thankfully, House of the Dragon's inaugural outing does plenty to sooth those nervous feathers and return HBO's modern flagship franchise back into the limelight. While slightly slow to start, each episode is gripping, tense, and enjoyable. The script is expertly handled and follows the source material well. The additions of excellent CGI and top flight acting, especially Paddy Considine's King Viserys who should deservedly get an Emmy nomination, enthralled me from start to finish. Drawbacks for some have included a jarring shift in the actors when their characters age, a few too many graphic birthing scenes, and the overall pacing of the first season. I tend to lean away from these however and give House of the Dragon much deserved benefits of the doubt. With fervor, I eagerly await the next season after such a strong start. Expand

What a brilliant entrance to this spin-off. The atmosphere, the tention, the actors and actresses, all the detail going into the sets and costumes are masterclass.

I cant believe we got this piece of Art after the fail of season 8 game of thrones. They redeemed themselves for me and I super excited for the next season. Episode 8 is my absolute favorite and on of the best episodes ever made in this "universe". Viserys nailed it and we got so many typical game of thrones moments, especially excellent writing. There were some minor downfalls, especially in Episode 9. Here and there some timejumps, but for me, they integrated that very well. I just wanted to get some pieces told by the series.

All in all wonderful made and nearly perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably, it is the best fantasy TV-show of this year. And definitely a much better show than you would expect to see in J. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe after the disastrous last two seasons of Game of Thrones. Yes, yes, there has been a rehab of the universe since seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones. We remember how these seasons contained incredibly stupid script moves, stupid dialogues, unrealistic battle scenes, there was a simplification of the characters ... really ... everything was done to destroy the best fantasy project (since the original Lord of the Rings trilogy).

And here we get the House of the Dragon. Initially, expectations were very low, due to the poor GoT ending. Moreover, the material of J.R.R. Martin book, written in the form of annalistic chronicles, is very specific and requires real additional processing. It takes effort to create living images, to write all the dialogues. If, without the help of Martin, two poor fellows Benioff and Weiss simply merged the scenario, lowering everything to the level of a kindergarten, then here (unexpectedly) the dialogues, twists, and characters look decent. For the character of Viserys Targaryen and the performance of the actor, I can raise the score by a point. The outlined problem of succession to the throne, the nature of the relationship between the characters, the dialogues - all this is created at a good level. Yes, the series starts slowly. The pace of the story is low, but there are no completely empty scenes that the GoT script abounded from the fifth season onwards.

Of course, it wasn't without drawbacks. First, it's the quality of the action. There is not enough of him in the series and ... thank for that. Since it's a real trouble with the action. The unrealistic behavior of a wild boar on the hunt causes laughter, Deamon dodging dozens of arrows causes tears. It would be better if everything remained within the framework of palace intrigues. Well, let the dragons fly back and forth, as additional diplomatic arguments.

With scenes which only reasons for existing is to look cool. Character decisions seeming idiotic and contradictory to their decisions in previous episodes. A big let down for the finale of a season that started brilliantly. But still an amazing show. Daemon stills every scene he is in and doesn’t have a single poor moment. And the King is the morally good character the audience can cheer for that was lacking in Game Of Thrones. I’m just extremely worried about the future seasons. Right now the show is sitting at GoT season 5 quality, I’d be fine if it drops to a season 6 GoT quality in the next 3 seasons. But there’s a lot of time and a lot of good things to ruin, I fear we might be getting a repeat of GoT season 8 in our future. Expand

In my eyes, that's an incredibleWhile I don't think House of the Dragon is as perfect as seasons 1-4 of Game of Thrones were, I personally think it's much much much closer to that than it is to the later seasons of Game of Thrones. In my eyes, that's an incredible achievement, because I never expected to care about this franchise again after the end of Game of Thrones.

Season 1 spends a lot of time establishing characters, their relationships and allegiances and motivations, and the state of Westeros during that time-period. And some viewers may find that to be slow, or even a little boring. Personally though, I really loved this. With such a character-centered conflict, the Dance of the Dragons, it's essential to understand the context of the war fully. And I'm certain that will make the conflict itself - in future seasons - much more enjoyable and emotional.

The show's writing does slightly falter at times, but overall, it's written very consistently good. The characters are all varied and interesting to watch, and the inclusion of so many dragons always keeps things exciting. I haven't found any issues with the CGI or set pieces either; it's clear how big the budget is for this series.

Overall, Season 1 of House of the Dragon easily deserves a 9/10 in my eyes. It's a great show, and a brilliant set-up for much more action-packed seasons ahead. I feel like I care about all the characters now, on either side of the battle, because of the time taken to establish them all here. And I genuinely feel like that will lead to greatness in the coming seasons.

It bugged me that it's somewhat blunt in its allegory of patriarchy, repeating too much the women's ineligibility for the throne, while the existence of non-consort queens was in fact not that rare in the Middle-Ages. It has also diverted in some things from the book, trying to be more dramatic, but in the attempt it ended up a bit childish, so not sure adults will be as hooked as they were with GoT.
Whether because of the limited scope, or because the book is not as fleshed out as the previous, it ends up not reaching the standard GoT created, yet it is still entertaining.
The score, the artistic direction, and the CGI (dragons included), and especially the costumes, are all great.

As a book reader and a fan of the original show, I can't begin to figure out what people don't like. Maybe just residual anger at how the original ended? Outside of a few slow episodes at the start, its all here and it's all mostly good.

It has had a start similar to that of Game of Thrones Season 1 and can see how the actions made in this season will have major implications in the future and cast a long shadow without referring to the books or giving any spoilers.

It was a masterful hand that HBO have played here because they are so confident about their show, the writing, the dialogue and acting. Even after a couple of time jumps that as viewer requires you to readjust. The CGI has been good, mainly the dragons and I am very exiting to see more.

I believe this show will improve and am fully invested.

The characterisation is excellent. Matt Smith and Paddy are wonderful in their respective roles as Daemon and Viserys. Rhaenyra is likeable; that thing she pulled in episode 2 is epic. The thing Daemon pulled in episode 3 is epic. Can't wait to see more epic moments.

I am changing my score from 9 to 10 because of the review bombing by Amazon shills. Just look at some of the 0-scorers, this is their first ever review.

I see a lot of reviews with low scores due to "wokeness." As someone who is opposed to woke politics being needlessly injected into entertainment, I am surprised to see so many people saying this series is woke because I have not noticed any modern political agendas in this series, and at no point have I felt like I was being lectured by the writers. Similar to the first 4-5 seasons of GoT, this series almost solely focuses on the politics of Westeros and Esteros, and the politics of the world are what made GoT and make this series so enjoyable. The dialogue and acting are excellent. So far, the first 5 episodes felt like they were utilized to set up big events later in the season. The fighting scene was great, and the dragons look very cool too. I recommend ignoring those labeling this show as "woke" and watching this series. I can tell George was heavily involved, because the story is well-crafted and does not pull any punches! Expand

Forget about Rings of Power, this is the show you want to see.

I'll be honest. I had some reservations about how well would House of the Dragon be capable to deliver the world of George R. R. Martin. And deliver it does.

Not only does it feel like Game of Thrones, but the cast is for the most part very well chosen. With most actors and actresses, delivering solid performances and being capable of pulling us into their world, their lives, their intrigues, their agendas. But above all making the viewer care about those characters.

Not that many shows can claim to be able to do that. But this one can. And it's good because after season 8 of Game of Thrones, the story needed to be focused on something else that makes us forget about that season.

And although the fall of House Targaryen is something we know it's going to happen no matter what, at least the show is being done well enough that even knowing that, doesn't really matter. It's a show that has proven to have what it takes to be seen and appreciated.

My only hope right now is that the success doesn't go to their heads, and they start making rookie mistakes. Game of Thrones lost the race in the last meters of the race, so I really hope that House of the Dragon doesn't make the same mistake.

Other than that three episodes in, and this show has come out strong and with enough fire to burn long and wide, instead of burning bright and fading just as fast.

This show is definitely a must see. And those that don't watch it will only lose.

So far there are 3 race swapped Targaryens. The problem with these characters are not the colour of their skin it's their acting ability. When you need to tick a box and choose people for diversity you then limit your pool of actors you can choose from. We have seen poor acting time and time again when they are just a tick box choice. We need to move on from this and choose the best person for the job regardless of skin colour. Needing more diversity is a twitter trend by a bunch of weirdos who just want to argue and create conflict. Onto the positives. Compared to the rings of power House of dragon succeeds in many areas. It has some really good casting and likeable characters. Matt Smith as Daeman is the main standout for me. He is fantastic. Milly Alcock who I have never heard of before is another standout. Fabian Frankel as Sir Criston is a good side character. There is actual character development in play here. Compared to rings of power the writing is night and day. It's engaging and makes you want to keep watching. The show is not perfect but it has suprised me and I will happily continue watching Expand

Not in the least that every male character is either trying to simp his way into power, or is a toxic sociopath wanting to murder, steal and lie his way to the top. There is a level of incompetence here that suggests that the writers hate men, despite - in some cases - being them.

By contrast, all the female characters are powerful, charismatic and constantly fighting against the male gaze, the demands of the patriarchy, and plots by those women foolish enough to actually fall in love with a man.

What IS done well, is the political intrigue, most of the costumes, the CG for the dragons, and the scenery.

Overall, I'm interesting to see where this goes, and am willing to give it a chance to develop. In most aspects it covers the lore pretty well, for the most part maintaining the narrative integrity of the universe in which it is set.

Writers really need to start developing more interesting male characters. Completely sick of the trope that we are all sociopathic, self-serving, women haters unless we can control them - in which case they become tolerable.
