This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The cinematography and production design continues to be incredible; however, story wise this was very clearly the weakest episode in the series. Rhaenys showing up and killing a hundred innocent people during Aegon II’s coronation and then choosing to not burn the green council is a major plot oversight. If she was written more intelligently, she would end the dance of the dragons war right then and there and burn the primary culprits to death. Obviously the show runners couldn’t kill the green council here as they don’t die at this point in Fire & Blood, so why include the scene then? It’s an example of spectacle over substance.

Also, the inclusion of Larys’ foot fetish feels like the most Game of Thrones thing the show could do with a character. Take a character from the source material, give them an unnecessary kink that they didn’t have in the book and milk it just to shove it down the audiences throat about how much of a villain this guy is. It’s the Ramsay Bolton effect.

The acting is still great. The set pieces are still gorgeous. It’s honestly just the story that is the weak link here. I still like House of the Dragon, but this episode is definitely a misfire. Hopefully it’s a minor blip in the overall run of the series as opposed to being the beginning of some creative cracks that are starting to form (ala Game of Thrones Season 5)
