The women of this family certainly come off well here, and that’s refreshing; they’re not fighting or gossiping, and their stories are still interesting to watch. We should see more of that on reality shows.

Ultimately, House Of Ho indulges fully in the drama and excess of being a crazy rich Asian. But despite the boundless glamour and endless riches, we’re left with the sense that when the patriarchy grips so tightly, if you are a woman, such wealth is little more than a gilded cage—not exactly an uplifting watch for the holiday season.

Ultimately, House of Ho is a glimpse into rich-people problems — rich people who simply happen to be Vietnamese American. It’s unfortunate there was no examination into how the Hos became the Hos: how they grew comfortable with excess spending after years of struggle. We get no external commentary on the family’s clout in Houston. The show seeks instead to showcase glamour over substance.
