    "Home Movies" isn't a typical cartoon; slapstick makes up a small percentage of its humor, and dry wit makes up more of its content than farcical antics, which are by no means absent. Fans of "The Simpsons" or "The Family Guy" will want to give "Home Movies" a look; it's less barbed, considerably more thoughtful and brilliantly... timed.

    Home Movies is slow paced and relatively unstructured (at least initially), character driven comedy that uses stylized visuals to overcomeHome Movies is slow paced and relatively unstructured (at least initially), character driven comedy that uses stylized visuals to overcome it's pretty apparent lack of budget. Now a much beloved cult classic it achieved little success when broadcast due it it's difficulty to classify and market. An animated show about kids, that is for adults but doesn't focus on 'mature' subject matter or rely on adult humour. The core theme of the show being childhood and growing up. Despite poor ratings it managed 4 seasons, evolving significantly, and even managing to avoid an abrupt cut off, instead finishing with a bitter sweet, open ended finale that suggested the creators were acutely aware at the time that they probably weren't going to get another season.

    The animation program used in season one is called Squiggle Vision, used to create the impression of movement when there is none after numerous complaints of people feeling sick looking at it Squiggle vision is was ditched for flash by season 2.

    In many ways Home Movies was ahead of it's time with overarching themes, narrative arcs and character development across the 4 seasons which many people at the time didn't even consider as options for animated comedies which were, and often still are, largely composed of non sequitur episodes.    … Full Review »
