It’s a good story well told and the only bum note is Stirling, whose performance is so large it unbalances the whole thing and makes one wonder why a directorial note was not given at any stage. But overall it’s a fine addition to the suburban nightmare-trove.

The shocking revelations pile up too quickly to be given fair treatment. Even the most destructive unravelling has to go at its own pace, especially on quiet streets like these.

If any actress was born to portray jaw-clenching contained rage and pain it is Anna Maxwell Martin. And it is fortunate that she does most of the heavy lifting in Hollington Drive because without her Kitemark quality it would be too miserable to contemplate.
