This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Looks pretty, but the writing spoils it. They took complete freedom and threw away the boat load of canon, only to give us irrelevant filler arcs with annoying characters, tons of inconsistencies and wasted potential. All in all a waste of time. Better to read the kilo-5 trilogy. Expand

A mediocre science fiction show with a halo logo plastered on the cover. People like to parade it as something fresh and new but the franchise has already seen it done better.

It's just so generic I personally can't get into it. It's boring with bad directing, CGI and acting. I have no idea how these scripts got greenlit.

I've never play Halo before so I don't know original story. Show is not the worst thing I've watched. Nice staff, nice decorations... Casting isn't great, isn't worst... well, except some thing. Storyline too... except child-line - it's useless. Somewhere graphics looks cheap but... not bad.
Show is fully-middle for me. I can't feel fan's pain because I've never played Halo-games. But I know - like in "Judge Dredd" Chief never took off his helmet.

The Master Chief is humanized too much, and the Cortana AI's purpose feels twisted in comparison to the games. Originally Cortana was designed as a companion and logistics support AI for the Master Chief in order to improve his combat abilities in ground warfare and to run strategic support for Cruiser class ships during space warfare, not as a complete replacement for a Spartan's mind. In fact Cortana and John 117's relationship through the Halo games provides a much more dynamic and compelling way to Humanize the Masterchief as she is his partner during his missions.
I'm not saying they had to completely do away with Kwan's Story but using an unknown Rebel teenager to Humanize the Master Chief felt off.
Another aspect that feels wrong is the so called blessed ones. They effectively eliminate the entire reason why the Covenant wanted to destroy the Human race by making only a select few people be reclaimers which also undo's Hundreds of thousands of years of Halo Canon.
The chosen one troupe has been beaten to death already and Master Chief's accomplishments where never about him being some sort of chosen one in the first place, he was a product Human engineering and as Cortana states it Luck.

I'm both a fan and player of the video game and I know what kind of toxicity exists around the Halo franchise.

So all the complaints about how it wouldn't respect the canon were to be expected, but just like a comic book or book adaptation, no one said these should be exact copies of the game. If you want that, then play the damn game.

Now speaking of the show, I do understand the changes. These were more than necessary because this show needs a bigger audience than just fans of the source material.
How well does it work for it? Well that's a different question.

The main story is solid, although I do think it lacked a little more action. It's quite understandable that there wouldn't be shootouts in every episode, but there was a deficiency in that area.
What it does well even with the CGI failing at times, is enough. Not great but for the most part it's solid.

Kwan Ha's narrative was completely useless though.
I didn't understand the need for that character and I hope I don't see her in season 2. Other than that I thought the main narrative even with its shortcomings was entertaining enough.

There is a lot of room for improvement of course, and I hope they get their act together heading into season 2 because this show has a chance to blossom if given the time. We'll have to see what happens, but in the meantime I can recommend it.

Thought I'd give a review from someone who is:

a. a hardcore gamer b. has very wide-ranging tastes in cinema and movies, and c. isn't hugely invested in Halo as a fan and can therefore bring some neutrality to the reactions to this show.

Firstly, the reactions to this show, before it even aired a single episode, were predictably stupid and internet-y. There were complaints that Master Chief, the protagonist, wasn't being played by the mad who played him in the games. I read many comments saying 'I won't watch it' because of that. The fact that the guy who played MC in the games is a seventy+ year old bald guy who only ever voice-acted...that didn't seem to matter to the obsessives. Nor did the fact that the guy was a deeply one-dimensional actor who sounded out of his depth when asked to do anything more than deliver one-line examples of badass-ery.
But obviously they had to get someone new to play Master Chief, and the role is taken by someone who is pretty much a AAA game protagonist made flesh. White, meat-headed, thick-jawed, short-haired, grunty. He should satisfy all those gamers terrified that the show is going to be 'woke', whatever that means. He's not given much to work with in terms of range tbh, but he's ok. The character he plays is just dull though. They've removed the helmet from Master Chief and revealed him as essentially an overgrown child with parent-issues. The thing is, MC was more interesting when he was just a symbol of terror for the Covenant, a kind of distant icon, a mythical figure almost. Remove that aspect of his character and you're not left with much at all. Is he good? Bad? Happy? Sad? Funny? Inventive? Who knows. He's not really any of those things, he's just...there. Grunting and looking pained while trying to hold onto magic rocks. A disappointing protagonist. The same can be said of almost all the characters really. Doctor Halsey is at least morally complicated, but it's not in a particularly interesting way: she's just another one of those evil utilitarians who shouts about killing 'hundreds to save billions!'

To me, even though I've never been a hardcore fan of the games(I've enjoyed them all, don't get me wrong, at least until Halo 5) the most enjoyable bits by some distance are the action scenes. These are great fun; there is something undeniably satisfying about seeing these weapons that you've handled so many times in-game realised as actual 3D props - watching a group of Spartans pile into a Warthog and chase down some Covenant Grunts, seeing one of the more interesting characters, a Spartan called Kai, lovingly handle a Needler gun that she saw on a laboratory table. The CG of the Covenant aliens is both high-quality and slightly too floaty to be convincing, but the lavishness of it all makes up for a lot of the shonky physics. The plot is disjointed and slow-moving, and revolves around various alien MacGuffins that everyone's trying to get their hands on. There's almost no momentum at all, you never feel like the show is propelled by anything. There are zero surprises.

And yet...I've watched all six episodes so far. I'd say mainly because it's mindless and the production values are high, and it's sufficiently fan-service-y that even someone who's not a huge fan of the games gets a kick out of the details.

Is it worth watching if you haven't played the games? Nah. But if you have it'll pass the time. And there you have it: that's an honest review of the show. It's nowhere near as bad as the fanboys claimed it would be, it's nowhere near as good as it could have been. It's exactly what most sane people expected: a pretty average sci-fi that's more fun if you've played the games.

I'm not mad that the story is not one from the games, characters are well written and nicely played and overall It's not bad but... I have to point out thing that shouldn't have place like the Johns friend steampunk inspired asteroid base with trams that can't possibly keep pressure, air etc... you know what I mean, that they have no possibility to be viable in space especially for people not wearing special suits in them therefore have no possibility to be in Halo universe, someone forgot that Halo is more core SF and not fantasy like Star Wars. At least I looked always on the Halo this way. Expand

Sure, none of this is turely excellent - the story is full of standard Sci-Fi tropes - but it has gotten me somewhat invested for the time being.

I guess they did it to keep the series on a more human level.
McElhone does a good job as Halsey, and thank lord Jen Taylor is voicing Cortana. Atleast they have some respect for the game.
Pablo Schreiber is a meh. Master Chiefs voice is not there and he is not 117 that i have grown up with.
It deviates a little from the game, but the story works okay for me.
Still, this series has plenty to reach for (no pun intended)

And after someI thought this was great, but then after reading reviews, I think I was just a dazzled fanboy. It is so nice to have a franchise you love get announced as a show, but that can cause blindness in ignoring it's faults. And after some reflection, I must now admit those exists. Please don't get me too out of place -- I like some characters (and hate others), the CG and production looks good to me, and I do like how the Halo ring is something built up to rather than introduced immediately. But I am seeing a fair disrespect for the franchise. I believe it was said that several in development never played the game, or didn't like them (I got to find who those were), and when you look, it does seem apparent. Creating a new time line to take your creative liberties? I don't think so. Covenant hobnob with humans? I'm pretty sure most would kill on site or need a HUGE amount of persuasion not to. And Master Chief removing his helmet for all to see? The correct answer to that was "when Hell freezes over".

For all future game adaptions, they should always remember to hire people who actually like the source material.

This season can be considered 7 and a half episode as one was just a filler to try and complete a sub plot that didn't need to be there and the other one to create a bond that wasn't entirely necessary but was used to move the story forward. Over all the first season felt very empty reason is that the writers wanted to create something original to them but also not used much of the original lore thus creating a mess with a noncoherent story telling. They are not trying to pull in the halo fans but a general crowd to try and experience a generic show that calls itself halo for branding thinking they can pull the wool over the fans eyes saying it's halo look its the master chief he is still the main protagonist even when he wasn't. Most people would say it's woke and I would agree to a certain extent because this has bad writing with generic scifi ideas and barely passable CGI along with it being a bad television series that overshadows whatever agenda they are nudging at. In conclusion this show is skippable due to bad writing and as a waste of time and if you are reading this you have been warned watch at your own risk. Expand
