Gets a 2 only because of the fight scene in the first episode. After episode 1 it drops off a cliff. If you are thinking about watching this because you are a fan of the video game series, don’t waste your time.

With so much potential the show could potentially turn it around as long as they veer off of course from season 1 and find a way to start anew. Lackluster and un-relatable storylines for the already formed fan base before the tv show was even thought of. If you aren’t a fan of Halo already then you may come to enjoy this show, but if you came into the series with even the slightest idea of the Halo universe then I wish you best of luck watching this current mess.

This show reminds me of Star Trek Next Gen but less cool and more cringe, Kwan-Ha is an insufferable character who we are introduced to in the first episode. If I'm being completely honest, I wasn't able to get past episode 3. This might be one of the most bizarre shows I've ever watched, as things just happen and they don't make sense and the story keeps going. The visuals are good, but the acting is only alright throughout and the writing is just appalling. If watched by a Halo fan it'll seem disrespectful and make no sense based on what we know. If a non-Halo fan watches it... well I hope they rewatch episodes to understand anything. This is just a slog of a film that really should've (and could've been better).

Also, why did they make Captain Keyes and his daughter black/mixed? If they wanted to have more black characters where is my boy Sergeant Avery Johnson?… Expand

It's insane to me that anyone would rate this above a 3/10. This show is terrible. Not only does it miss easy opportunities to pay homage to the games/books, but the story they replaced it with is trite and hackneyed.

Goodness, it's very simple Hollywood, when you have an established story (books, comics, video games, etc.) it's ok to put your own twist on it but do not simply use names and likeness then do your own thing. At that point it's not about anything more than profiting on an established IP. There is an art to execution. Execute the story well. I'm hopeful for future seasons - would love nothing more than to see this show get put on track (not back on track since it was never really there in the first place). However, I cancelled my Paramount+ subscription immediately after watching the season finale. As a reason for cancellation, I put "Halo sucked." If the reviews are more of the same for season 2, I won't waste any more time or money on watching this, if only as a means to not enable hack writers and studios from trying to profit off of recreating the wheel and making a block.… Expand

It feels like a generic scifi trying to wear Halo's skin and it really shows that it had 265 failed drafts to try and make it canon. Covenants weapons are way too powerful than they have ever been depicted and writing choices makes 0 sense... Why would someone casually hang out with the person they knew who murdered their parent and why would the humanity genociding alien cult allow a human of all species tell them what to do. Avoid like the plague, unless you enjoy mediocre shiny scifi in which case this is for you until you find the next thing to move onto… Expand

Once you alienate the fans, all you have left is casual viewers and they would go either which way as long as the content was good. Very few fights, even then they are very clunky and not Spartan-esk
People can't seem to keep their armor on and act through visual cues and use impactful music
Master Cheeks betrayed the UNSC and doomed Reach so that he could get some.
My boy Jorge and Noble Team died because Master Cheeks felt lonely.
Covanent is downgraded to a minor nuisance in the show.

Halo sets a new low for adaptations of any kind by outright refusing have anything in common with the source material it is based off of. This is made abundantly clear by how half of the season is devoted to characters invented for the show doing things unrelated to the main plot in settings invented for the show. Half of the series' runtime is unrelated to Halo, effectively set in it's own universe; and the half which is allegedly built off of the source material changes effectively every character's personality and motivations, meaning very little of the final product bares any resemblance to the games, or even expanded universe of the series it is based on. Beyond its failures as an adaptation, Halo: The Series is just a poorly paced, awkwardly written show which clearly wants the viewer to see it as an incredibly intelligent work of science fiction, but repeatedly chooses to tell the viewer important information about its characters and plot instead of showing it, and what little moments of development we do see are often incredibly cliched and hard to care about. All around Halo: The Series oozes with disrespect for the IP it is based on and unenthusiasm to exist. The show-runners themselves have said they never played the games, but even without knowing this it's very clear in the show itself. So much of the series' plot feels tonally unlike, or in some cases thematically opposed to the games that it almost feels spiteful, as if the series thinks it is better than what it's based on and wants to distance itself from it. It lacks all of the character and captivating narrative choices of the games and tries to build it's own product instead. Unfortunately, even if that wasn't an inherently flawed approach to adaptation, the show can't find two legs for itself to stand on. There are so many new characters and locations meant to express themes the source material already did more effectively that it becomes almost humorous seeing how ignorant of the IP the show-runners were. At its heart, both the original series and the show are supposed to be stories about "humanity" in the abstract sense of identity and purpose, the games managed to explore this theme with subtlety and charm which made their stories genuinely engaging to move through. The show's attempts to explore the same concept however come across as stereotypical, predictable, and worst of all just bland. This series really feels like it isn't made for anyone. If you like the games you'll be disappointed with how far the show deviated from the franchise's identity. If you liked the show and wanted to check out the games, you'll be disappointed by how most of the show's cast, and all of its style are absent. This series is cut and dry just the cashing in of a paycheck with no respect or care for the franchise it was built off of, and it isn't worth your time.… Expand

The show is something different than the games and the changes and new characters cant win me over. I think the games were already a blueprint for a movie adaption with not many changes needed. Even a Halo creator came out and roasted the show (Not the Halo I made). Lets start with the elephant in the room: The ending of season 1 is so horrible that I expected many angry rants. I don't know how they want people to come back for a second season. Lets continue with the problems: You barely see in the show that humanity is loosing a war against the superior alien Covenant forces with billions of casualties. Master Chief is hollow compared to the games and also other characters feel inferior like Cortana, Miranda Keyes or Elizabeth Halsey. Also Cortanas and Master Chiefs incredible relationship is ruined or non existing here. I know they want something different than the games but everything will be judged against the source material no matter what franchise is used and you have to deliver. This is something that will be come up again and again. While I see the potential of Kwans story and character it should be done better. Also does the struggle of 1 world matter when planet after planet is purged / glassed by the Covenant? The character Makee is an interesting choice that I would defend. Unluckily she is wasted by the script. Also there is not much action in the show. I hate bashing here but the choices were questionable if they would win the Halo fans over. The actors are fine for me after some thinking. I cant blame them for doing / delivering the script when their roles are different form the sources. Pablo Schreiber does a great job but does not feel like Master Chief. I praise him for the performance. Yerin Ha as Kwan and Charlie Murphy are wasted by the script but do a good performance. I cant blame them. I shorten this by saying all actors are decent to fine. I praise the action scenes but those are sparingly used. Some sets and effects are not that good but it is not that bad. I repeat this is not the Halo of the source material or what it need to be. Overall I think it is a missed opportunity and overconfidence that they can improve Halo harmed the show. The source was a blue print that should be used with some adaptations like Lord of the Rings. It would have millions of Halo fans watching and praising it instead. I give a 3/10.… Expand

Quel naufrage, quelle infamie… jamais je n’aurais cru qu’ils oseraient faire de Halo, la célèbrissime licence de jeux vidéo, une pantalonnade wokiste complètement à côté de la plaque ! on dirait que ç’a été boulotté par une bande de SJWQuel naufrage, quelle infamie… jamais je n’aurais cru qu’ils oseraient faire de Halo, la célèbrissime licence de jeux vidéo, une pantalonnade wokiste complètement à côté de la plaque ! on dirait que ç’a été boulotté par une bande de SJW rageux au taquet, à l’exemple de ce personnage inventé de toutes pièces qui parasite les deux tiers de la série : la petite conne d’ado rageuse en perpétuelle crise de nerfs (Caliméro dans les cordes !).

Mais en vérité, c’est toute l’intrigue, la pseudo-intrigue de cette première saison qui fait n’importe quoi : on va d’ineptie en ineptie et les scénaristes défoncés au crack foulent au pied tout ce qui fait l’intégrité d’Halo, son identité même ! car franchement, à part l’armure et le casque, on se demande où est passé Halo là-dedans… non mais Halo quoi !

Plus on avance au fil de ces 9 épisodes, plus on tombe de haut, de très haut… à part le rôle du Docteur Halsey (bien interprété par McElhone) tout le reste de la distribution est sévèrement à la masse et ne sert qu’un seul impératif : promouvoir la diversité au maximum (les minorités sont ici… majoritaires) et déverser ses idées de propagande woke progressiste à la con… Du coup, la cohérence vole en éclats très rapidement et ça ne fait que s’aggraver : un putain de tissu de conneries ininterrompues !

L’USNC est ici par exemple (sans rien dévoiler…) le mal incarné… le Major réclame justice (lui aussi est un social justice warrior pleurnichard… pas un warrior hélas) et quant à Cortana… mais qu’ont-ils fait de Cortana ?! (c’est un massacre à tout point de vue !).

A chaque épisode, on est de plus en plus énervé et dépité… c’est tout l’univers de Halo qui s’effondre ici devant nous avec ces comédiens laids et grotesques (comédiennes y compris d’ailleurs… ). Les jeux avaient beau avoir l’air ballot de temps à autre avec leurs scénarios plus ou moins téléphonés et simplistes… mais ça tenait la route au moins ! ça restait à la fois énigmatique et étrangement fascinant. But whoever is in charge of writing for this show needs to be let go. Even if this didn't have the Halo name attached to it, it's just bad TV in general. I was all on board with creative liberties. I knew they couldn't just "do the games". But oh my gosh did they bastardize and completely disrespect the source material. The ONLY character they did right was Dr. Halsey. Cortana was great as far as acting goes, but the writers didn't do her any favors. With so many great stories out there to tell from the source material, it's insulting this is what we fans got after waiting for so long. This show is just plain bad TV, and utter trash as a Halo story adaptation. I will not be back for season 2.… Expand

I literally laughed out loud when the credits rolled on the last episode. Not because any of it was funny, but to cover the pain of witnessing what they came up with after waiting for a live action movie/show for well over a decade. There really isn’t anything positive to say other than the 3 decent but short action scenes in the 9 episodes. Seriously, the show runners should be embarrassed and ashamed. They had a decent cast, and the most amazing lore to work with, and they gave us trash. Complete trash. Halo will never get another chance at a show or movie because of this. What a waste.… Expand

One of the biggest mistakes the Studio made was probably hiring writers and directors who have no notion or have even played the games, or at least read some of the books. I don't know why they thought this decision was good in the first place, but here we are. I have no problem with changes to a story so it can fit the narrative you made because you can't recreate absolutely everything precisely from the games and books, but the creators didn't even bother to make it as close as possible. They made an overly complicated story for a 1st season when they should've kept it simple. I'm okay with changing the looks of some characters as long as they are portrayed as close as possible to the originals, but with Keyes and Miranda they didn't even bother. And Master Chief has nothing in common to the original the design of his armor looks terrible too... how come Forward Unto Dawn makes a more accurate portrayal of the Chief and even look more accurate than this one considering it has probably 5 times bigger budget than FUD. The story itself doesn't make any sense and I still can't understand why the showrunners try to make Kwan a thing when even they themselves forget about her. She literaly disappeared for two episode episodes (would've been better if she wasn't included at all because her character is completely pointless) and came back, because the writers remembered that she existed. Elements of the story didn't make sense like the memory whipe of the Spartans' childhood and capsules for controling their emotions and stuff. As a whole the show is quite average, below average even if you are an generic viewer and haven't touched the games or books then you may find some enjoyment in it, but for the fans it doesn't appeal for us. I would've given it a 5/10 but consideribg what Paramount is doing with YouTubers who criticise the show it deserves a 3 (even that's too generous for them), but I really hope thay don't make a second season to this and just let it go.… Expand

In order to judge Paramounts Halo, you need to do so twice. Both as an original standalone show, and an adaptation. And quite frankly, it fails miserably at both.

As an orignal show, it brings nothing new to the genre. It follows the same generic storylines that we've all seen a thousand times before, and executes so poorly that you'll find yourself wishing you'd just watched one of the works that this show is desperately trying to be.

Stop me if you've heard this one before.

"A youth, living on a desert-like planet, suffers tragedy at a young age and must seek the help of mystical people living in the desert so that they might discover their hidden potential as a chosen one and fight against their evil imperial oppressors."

That describes the primary story line of Halo. As well as Dune, and Star Wars. In the hands of Halos writers t is quite possibly the most generic and unoriginal story line ever written.

And lets not even get started with the other main character. Who, instead of a deserving character arc, the writers decided to give another extremely generic mind control and memory wipe plot, followed by a generic and unoriginal love story.

Credit where it's due. The cast is very talented. But they are stunted by abysmal and lazy writing.

Then we judge it as an adaptation.

Oh boy.

Well, you can consider every problem with the base storyline dialled up to 15 when compared to the infinitely better written and more created source material the writers so arrogantly chose to ignore.

They completely miss every single point of the orignal games and books, in favour a story that simply doesn't work.

Every character is worse than their orignal counterpoart. Less intelligent, less likable. The shows versions are completely devoid of character arcs and basic personality traits.

The writers didn't just disregard the source material. they spat on it. They decided "I can do better" and then wrote and entire season proving that they absolutely couldn't, in fact, do better.

Unless season 2 involves a completely new director and writing team, I see it also failing miserably.… Expand

Add a girl named Kwan that teaches stupid master chef about emotions and what is right and wrong... and im done. Why did the show runners feel the need to discard 20 years of lore established over multiple forms of media, not just video games, but books, graphic novels, and animated shorts? You didn't have to do a 1-to-1 adaptation of a video game, but you went so far in the other direction that I barely recognize any of the characters except for the armor they occasionally wear to remind us who they are. This series is a disservice to a loyal fan base, and honestly, considering 343 seems to have signed off on this dumpster fire, I'm not sure I care to continue buying their games.

Who did they make this show for?

Disclaimer: I'm not even criticizing this from some "anti-woke" perspective, I could care less that Keyes had a palette swap. But the background details of how the Spartans were created, the motivations and personalities of the Chief and so many other characters is all out of sorts. The Prophets would NOT stand for a human wielding so much influence, it would be a threat of the highest order to their authority. Master Chief is not a raging lunatic. There are many BILLIONS of humans and almost 30 years of conflict with the Covenant to create new stories that synch with existing materials. Why this separate timeline crap?… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. as a trend with video game adaptations(uncharted, witcher) this is "halo" in name only, chief walks around with his helmet off at his side 90% of the time, even in areas you'd def want the helmet on, the story has been changed, characters swapped, motivations changed and the only good thing that could have come would have been at least some ACTIONS. yet we don't get that either, in 6 episodes!! i've only seen 15mins worth of actual spartans fighting and battles, the rest is moronic derivative boring plot bs and terrible characters like "kwan"

Putting my Halo bias aside, this is purely a bad TV show. Boring writing, lack luster characters, stupid plot, frustrating arcs (Kwan Ha arc is so excruciatingly bad that I've resorted to just fast forwarding whenever shes on screen) and that's not to mention the butchery that has been done to the Halo side of the show. Long loved characters are unrecognizable in their appearance and character traits, the lore has been thrown out, the source material has been ignored (a lot of the creative team confirmed that they never played or read any of the existing Halo games or books) and it genuinely feels like a 2nd rate generic sci-fi show that they've slapped the Halo name on for a quick buck. As a Halo fan, this is an absolute train wreck that broke my heart to watch. As a sci-fi fan, this is a boring and frustrating mess. There is one small silver lining though, the battle scenes against the Covenant are visually amazing. Seeing the needler, plasma pistol, plasma rifle and many other iconic weaponry in action is exhilarating and they have been presented with great care. The decision to portray the covenant in these battles with absolute brutality and mild gore was an excellent decision that had me glued to the screen.

Unfortunately they are so very infrequent that sticking around between these battle scenes is quite frankly, a chore. I've only watched up to ep 5 and the only significant covenant battles that have occurred so far were in ep 1 and ep 5 for a total of like 20 to 30 mins. With the Human-Covenant war being the only point of interest while also being something that is ever rarely shown, it results in the majority of this show becoming a stale, boring, frustrating and poorly written after thought. This TV series will become nothing more than another stepping stone to contribute to Halos ever increasing fall from grace. Like 343i before it, CBS seems hell bent on dividing the existing fan base and as a life long fan of the series that has been a devout follower since H:CE, I realize now that maybe it's time to move on.… Expand

One word, disappointed.

Action is good, but it's solely focused on Kwan Ha instead of Master Chief and his team. Lackluster part in writing and casting. Somehow Sonic did a better job at video game adaptation than Halo itself... MicrosoftOne word, disappointed.

There is nothing redeeming here. Bad acting, bad casting, bad CGI, terrible writing. It’s trash on the creative end all the way through to the production values. That's not how anything in the Halo universe works, you lunkehad writers. This is not Halo. Why is the name even attached? Well it’s $$$, but to completely disrespect and desecrate all over the lore and take… just absurd turns in the story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you grew up loving this series be prepared for disappointment. This had the potential to be great, producers were giver the opportunity to make it great, and they flew it into the ground like Captain Keyes did The Pillar of Autumn. I can only hope that the rest of it doesn't end up like The Pillar. It starts off with a almost exclusively non-white female dominant casting with a few whites thrown in to not seem racist. This Star Wars 7 spacer brat is not only lucky, but able to outrun 20 elite's AFTER her 5 friends are picked of brutally with plasma fire within seconds while she manages to send off a flare to signal to her people. They get torn to shreds in some great CGI. The Elite's rip the insurgents to pieces and then the Spartans come in and you expect it to get good. So it does for a bit but then some continuity starts popping up, heavy machine guns used by the humans are useless but as soon as a Spartan grabs it now it has power. They wreak the Elite's in typical Spartan fashion managing to save our now even luckier space rat. After the Chief and Spartans walk away from the lone survivor they make their way to the main continuity mess up. These Spartans we know to be children told an elaborate lie and given a goal to be humanity's heros are no more then literal BRAINWASHED super soldiers. Flash over to the Covenant who have been eradicating the humans like Hitler did the Jews, now have a young white human as a "Blessed One" and seen as an equal or even greater then the High Prophets. Not only is she fluent in their language and refuses to teach them anything in human dialects, she gives them advice on how to deal with humans. Right back to the UNSC where the casting for the Keyes Family, a military proud, to the letter, respectful family is replaced with a Jacob Keyes who doesn't care for military procedure with beards and regulation buzz cuts, he is a wuss and can barely stand up to his strongly opinionated daughter about disposing of the brat. This same child who would rather lie about aliens killing her whole settlement and blame it on her savior's because of a grudge regarding her mother's death. This brat then gets thru to John somehow and he starts to go rogue since these old repressed memories sparked up completely disregarding his Motherish like figure Dr. Halsey ordered him not to. The head honcho of the UNSC is of course a woman, orders him brought back and the girl killed so now John has to save himself and the girl. Doing so he is then "threatened" by this girl and I say that because she just picks up his rifle while he is still fully armoured. He tells her it won't even dent his armour then proceeds to humanize himself by removing the helmet. This is a huge no-no but the actor did a great job playing Sierra-117 and although a bit more cold then the real deal he does great. They keep the helmet off for the rest of show. Overall, it has absolutely nothing to do with Halo other then the rights to use the characters. The steaming hot turd they call a story completely built on messages throw at you deliberately and under the radar while making up their own lies to tell this story. The casting was inclusive while being exclusively almost non white. CGI was great for the elite's but simple things are overlooked. The spacer girl is Jesus like with her luck of avoiding death while being indignant, ungrateful, disrespectful and a life coach to the Chief. The Keyes Family was casted for their skin color, nothing to do with how well they portray the actual character. Covenant hail some white human and while she learns more about them, she gives nothing back. So in the end, I won't even give this a mark. I didn't pay for it so I don't feel like I wasted my money but don't go outta your way to watch it immediately. Feel free to watch it never or if you just wanna watch an attempt at shoving the message down your throat while messing with a well developed universe still watch something else.Ive watched the second now and it is worse then the first episode. Been told about the third and I now give up on these producers. The white girl with the Covenant is not only able to operate a Covenant ship like an AI but she also wields the flood like a pet. Or at least I think it's the flood since of course the producers didn't read or play or watch anything that came before. This show is **** and the creates of this atrocious waste of money should be skinned alive and strung up by their ham strings, beaten like a pinata and left out for the crows to pick at.… Expand

I use to watch my boyfriend at the time play Halo and listen to a friend talk about the book series. I was never a great fan but man the games had a great story that even had me interested. Pretty bland. Another 'woke' TV series. Reality TV meets Sci-Fi. The entire show is based around interpersonal/personal conflict. Not expecting anything fantastic out of the cast or story for the rest of the season.

Linear plots. Non-caucasians and women can't be bad guys. No large battle scenes. Small conflicts with 5-15 people. Plots entirely driven around self discovery. Just waiting for a non-hetro character to be dropped zzzz. Stop abusing minorities to try to win awards, we dont like it. Theres going to be An episode entirely dedicated to John's flashbacks. A capture and escape of Kwan who then, not directly, killers her captor. Probably Vinsher. We'll be made to hate him through lines like 'the UNSC is right' and 'we have a war going on, it's justified' etc. It won't be anything like hating Joffrey in game of thrones.

End game, Keyes siding with John and using her ship to taxi service him around the galaxy racing the Makee to activate an artifact. End game, she's captured and coverts to love himans and the covenant and profits become the main antagonists for season 2 and 3. The characters never come together to solving an issue that's not driven by their own 'woke' status. Ie, covenant attack and we all band together to defend it. Nope. A rogue UNSC fleet break a truce with the miners and they all come together to stop them. Not gonna happen. This is a reality TV show. Just goes downhill and gets worse and worse after that. Throw in realllll lazy animation. Almost none. Lots of recycled animated sets. There should be 1 more 4-20 person to person battle and one 'sneaking' or daring escape of some sort. Every character has a redeeming moment. Depressingly boring show so far and my expectation is that it just gets worse. I guess 10 more episodes might prove me wrong but I doubt it.

They will have more story arcs than game of thrones and none of them will make sense. You'll see probably a hero Caucasian male become the main antagonist and he'll die to one of the diverse characters, usually through a secondary action ie a bomb goes off as they escape and he gets engulfed in flames. Or after a battle, he'll fall through a floor and won't be helped by the diverse character because they realise he's evil to the core or something.

There's lots of different weird side story arcs that add nothing to the main plot. They will be there to stretch out the series and story. You'll get sick of them pretty quick. It will be stuff like, Kwan has so get back to her planet and its half an episode dedicated to her walking only to be captured as a spy. Or keyes spending heaps of time researching, like a whole 20mins to find out that the covenant didnt make the artifact. Covenant won't have any big battles but they will elude to them happening, like they will arrive just as the battle ends and theres wreckage or a destroyed camp or something. Right at the end expect a battle to occur but they won't do it because of budget. Overall... pretty unimpressive show. Unfaithful to the source material. Completely imaginative rewrite but also clearly incorrect in its basis. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they jump the shark and just go do some time travel or at least some weird magic, dead serious. Thats gow non sci-fi writers get around filler material for tv shows, they just say 'cant we have like, John has a twin, and he can communicat with her through space instantly using his psychic powers? Also hes a vampire?. Break causality because the writers have zero understanding of the genre. Its much easier to just screw with source material or learn the basis of a universe than it is to just straight up make stuff up. It breaks the ability to suspend disbelief. So many jarring moments. The sets are cheap. Real real cheap. So so so many moments where there's just characters sitting doing nothing but contemplating their existence urgh. Very lazy writing. I'm really struggling to make my way through them. Scenarios and sources of conflict are entirely driven by stolen glances and internal thoughts of the characters doing morally ambiguous actions.

To quote the show -
'The Truth could bring us all down'
'That's what Cortana is for'
'Cue ominous music...'
Pretty much sums it up. Words and emotive language are the go to for the writers. Not sets, plots and good writing. It's all about trying to get people on an emotional roller-coaster rather than standing them in the light of discovery and enlightenment. Mad Max. Mandolorian. Lower decks. Star treks (pre-discovery). Boring.

It's obvious what the show would have been, a mandalorian style man against the universe who picks up friends along the way. Instead, it's a let's make it cheap, fast, cut it where we can, hire the cheapest animators and set builders we can find and cross your fingers it's enough to get it over the line for awards and for fanservice. Let's see what happens, i guess the only way is up when you're at rock bottom right?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. kartana!!! they've ruined everything!!! even Halo 4: Forward Until Dawn, 2012 looks more epic than this parody. the covenants there struck terror into people who encountered them for the first time, they are smart, faster and more agile. here they are like cows on ice. Master Chief has always been a mysterious hero who was never shown without a helmet and only showed his childhood images. so to screw up the movie on the first episode, it's necessary to wait. it is immediately clear that the series was made by incompetent people who do not even know the universe and the plot. it's just a shame!!! I offer to boycott this picture!!! we will not allow Master Chief to be bullied!… Expand

The show is called Halo but has nothing to do with Halo. The story is ok but got boring and the CGI is awful. I gave up after episode 4. Waste of time
