This is a star-studded, lavishly made drama that falls into that special niche: If it were any better, it would be worse.

Besides its lackluster execution, the film has a certain cobwebby quality.

Kidman works hard here, but she is sabotaged by a common script.

For the most part, Grace of Monaco is a series of vignettes notable for odd scene hopping and stilted acting. But the ending is worth hanging around for.

It’s not a particularly convincing storyline, nor does it offer much insight into Kelly as a person outside of this limited time period. Kidman’s aloof demeanor has a regal quality, but she fails to capture Kelly’s humanity (Dahan’s reliance on extreme close-ups is poor compensation).

Despite the best efforts of Nicole Kidman, who is operating way above the level of her material, this screwy fantasy nominally inspired by the lives of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier doesn’t even make for a good fairy tale.

The resulting film is a mess. Driven by a weak, facile screenplay, the film is singularly shallow in both intellectual and emotional content.

Weighed down by the politicsThe knives are out but it has to be acknowledged that 'Grace of Monaco' is everything that the critics say it is. Weighed down by the politics of the day, whilst simultaneously illustrating the inner turmoil of the princess herself, the dual arc of the story is unsuccessful on both fronts and ends up an excruciating bore. Performances suffer from miscasting, especially the usually reliable Tim Roth playing Rainier, and despite being gorgeously coiffed and costumed Nicole Kidman's portrayal is pretty but colourless. This is the actress's least effective performance in years. Her close ups seem to have been shot through gauze and continually draw attention to her blood shot eyes. This is a story that is so rich in potential that a good film could possibly be made about the fairy tale principality. However, despite some pretty music and the occasional spark of interest nothing can dispel the damage inflicted by a third rate script. It ends a being a prize turkey of the first order, ironically, lacking any grace. I saw it at the cinema (in the UK) about a year ago. However, its direct to TV American showing, in lieu of a conventional cinematic release, is not surprising and speaks volumes. Full Review »

Grace and Rainier always looked so glamorous and perfect. Ms. Kidman did a wonderful job portraying Grace's poise and class. I knew little about their private life except for those well documented in the tabloids. After getting a glimpse into some of the other obstacles they had to overcome, I have new admiration and respect for them both. I definitely think if you are a fan of the European royals, you should check it out. Full Review »
