A blend of romance and mystery, borne up by delectable touches of soap opera, the series races along charged with suspense—excruciatingly so, sometimes—from the first of its six parts to the last. This is the gold in “Gold Digger,” and there’s a lot of it.

Gold Digger works beautifully as a soapy drama that promises to be full of twists and turns but emotional and psychological substance too. Jennings surely has much more to show us with Tom (otherwise, y’know, you don’t get Jennings) and Ormond grounds the whole thing in truth.

On the whole, the miniseries misses an opportunity to really lean into its unconventional premise and explore both Benjamin and Julia’s pasts, and how their experiences inform their current relationship. And yet, there is still something worthwhile about the way it addresses, at least in part, considerations about love and aging.
