There is so much to love about this series, not the least of which is watching three superb actresses not only on top of their respective games, but also playing so brilliantly off one another. More to the point, though, is how Mellor has grounded the miniseries in credible real life. There are many moments of humor in the three episodes made available to critics, but they are woven into the context of the story and characters.

Girlfriends doesn’t aways hit its marks--particularly during the over-reaching opening minutes of Episode 4. But the three lead performances, particularly on the part of Miranda Richardson, are more than enough to carry the day.

A remarkable cast. ... Girlfriends trades on some standard older-ladies-doing-wacky-things humor, but that’s just to put you at ease.

The three [actresses], with Ms. Mellor’s able assistance, apply refreshing layers of honesty and genuine perplexity to their characters’ stories. Age is an engine of Girlfriends. But so is empathy.
