    Absolutely awful/amazing; snarky, pseudo-intellectual cynicism run amok, and in disguise as liberating comedy for the development of women's rights, while simultaneously offering nothing but vapid characters that have absolutely nothing interesting or funny to say what-so-ever... i.e. this show tries too hard, the pace is too fast for the characters to develop, and when a funny idea seemsAbsolutely awful/amazing; snarky, pseudo-intellectual cynicism run amok, and in disguise as liberating comedy for the development of women's rights, while simultaneously offering nothing but vapid characters that have absolutely nothing interesting or funny to say what-so-ever... i.e. this show tries too hard, the pace is too fast for the characters to develop, and when a funny idea seems like it could be introduced, it is quickly dismissed to remind the viewer of how bored the main character is.… Expand

    After about 3 episodes, I still didn't find the main character and the ones surrounding her interesting.
    The show wants her to be cute and charming with a devil-may-care attitude, but that was all lost on me, especially because the writers didn't bother to flesh out her character any further.
    So, I didn't feel any spark in that respect and I found it all rather tedious. That leads you    After about 3 episodes, I still didn't find the main character and the ones surrounding her interesting.

    That leads you to wondering, why all those people around her think she's great and help her without getting anything in return.

Stripping the series from its ties to reality, I think Sopiha is one of the worst re-constructions of Mary Sue trope; she is vapid, shallow, immoral and developmentally challenged.     I finished the series. Stripping the series from its ties to reality, I think Sopiha is one of the worst re-constructions of Mary Sue trope; she is vapid, shallow, immoral and developmentally challenged. Praising a lack of personal, intellectual, moral and, maybe most importantly, social foundation as a 'gateway to being interesting, creative and successful' is a horrible idea.

    In contrast to other Mary Sue tropes in modern hero archetypes (or it can be considered some kind of coming of age), Sopiha does not develop beyond making money.

    If Sopiha is a good representation of irl Sophia Amoruso, she was just lucky and I pity her friends. If writers thought, somehow, this was a feasible character then they have to drink a big cold glass of water and think about learning a trade.    … Expand

    It wasn't necessarily NOT engaging but it also didn't leave much of an impression in the slightest. The characters were not terrible nor were they poorly acted. In fact I would say that the characters were the only thing trying to be complex in an otherwise one-dimensional story and plot.

    [Girlboss] devotes its early episodes to doing nothing more than proving that Sophia is a surly jerk. But once Sophia finally starts to let go of her self-defeating instincts and make things happen for herself and for Nasty Gal, Girlboss becomes a lot more interesting, and a lot more fun.

    For all of Girlboss‘ bluster, the real problem isn’t that Sophia is unlikeable, it’s that she’s uninteresting. Hardly fleshed out beyond a line drawing of a devil-may-care rebel who hardly blinks at the idea of raiding a dead woman’s closet for vintage goodies, she’s a terribly wobbly center for an already uncentered show.

    It never realizes that perpetual adolescence is the show’s problem, not hers. Sophia needs reason to change for the series to develop, and Girlboss is far too content watching the business grow instead of its star.
