Based on the manga by Shirō Masamune and made popular world-wide by Mamoru Oshii's 1995 cyberpunk classic, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex adds more to the rich, philosophical tale of the fusion between man and machine.
The year is 2030 and man and machine are fast becoming fully integrated. Advancements in computer technology that can be melded into both body and mind have become readily available.
Criminal acts have entered a new era as well. Exploiting the very systems meant to advance society for the better, criminals have created new ways to get what they desire. Cyberbrains, now very commonplace within society, allow for the abuse of people's minds through hacking. Along with body enhancements come androids that allow for criminals to work their machinations from behind the scenes.
As new and more serious forms of crime escalate, more advanced police units are needed to handle these emerging threats. That is why Public Security Section 9, a special task force made up of both flesh and blood humans and mechanical cyborgs, has been assembled. Equipped with the latest technology and advance multipedal tanks called Tachikomas, Section 9 handles high crimes committed against the Japanese people. Each member has their own strong points that come in handy during each mission, but when dealing with such highly advanced criminals, strong points are second only to cold, hard skill.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex takes place in the year 2030, one year after the events of the first movie that was released in 1995. However, SAC takes place in an alternate universe. Thus, the events of the movie never take place in the world of SAC.

For Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 1st GIG, the SA/C nomenclature denotes SA as 'Stand Alone' and C as 'Complex'. 'Stand Alone' episodes deal with various cases that Section 9 handles. 'Complex' episodes cover one major case that Section 9 investigates throughout the first season.

Most hardcore of anime I have ever encountered. It's got crime scene investigating in it witch by then i am hocked.. I love this kind of stuff. Very out standing!

My rating is for the whole series.

One of the best sf cyberpunk anime out there. Story is fantastic about a secret crime solving unit in the future where the lines between human and machine are blurred.

I'm a typical anime guy whose watched tons of different anime, including Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note; you name it. Ghost in the Shell is by far one of the best Anime's ever created. I don't have a favorite anime, but this one is in my top 5 if not top 3. Highly reccomend both seasons, as they are both on par.… Expand

Ghost in the Shell is and always will be my favorite Anime of all time. So when I first heard about the series I almost dropped to my knees in excitement. Did it live up to the movies god like status? Almost. While it isn't as good as the original movie. J'ai rematé cette série que je n'avais pas vue depuis 2005 et force est de constater que le pari est réussi : fort différente du film de 1995 d'Oshii -c'est une autre interprétation- elle est très proche de l'oeuvre de Shirow pour le meilleur et pour le... pire, parfois !

A noter que lors de sa sortie au compte-gouttes en 2005 donc, l'éditeur-crevard facturait éhontément 25 boules le bousin saucissonné en 7 volumes, soit 7x25=... non, j'ai trop mal à mon cyber-fion pour compter. Bref, la série la plus chère de l'histoire ! Je ne le regrette pas cependant, en bon otacul soumis et docile à mes heures perdues, surtout lorsqu'il s'agit du Fantôme dans le boîte.

Mais je parlais du meilleur et du pire, repris ici des mangas tarabiscotés de Shirow, notamment l'intrigue complexe (d'où le nom dans le titre) à tiroirs qui peut s'avérer des plus lourdingues à suivre avec une tétra-chiée de dialogues dans ta face. Cela dit, on reste encore dans le compréhensible mais faut clairement pas être bourré.

Il faut dire que la mise en scène lors des dialogues est très statique avec de longs plans fixes et très peu d'animations ; en outre, les personnages récitent leur partie comme dans un théâtre antique.

Autre doléance si vous me permettez, l'aspect technique vraiment faiblard pour ne pas dire à la rue la plupart du temps. Heureusement, les scènes d'action se rattrapent de par leur bon découpage et les effets sonores sont d'un très bon niveau. Et puis, l'excellente VF générale nous rassure franchement.

Ces griefs ayant été formulés, Stand Alone Complex n'est pas qu'une bizzare histoire alambiquée de corruption politicarde cyberpunk, c'est aussi de nombreux épisodes indépendants entre eux et toujours bien écrits qui apportent à leur façon des éclairages très intéressants sur le monde et ses personnages.

On retrouve d'ailleurs chez les personnages -mais en plus développée- la patte des BD de Shirow, parmi lesquels Batou, Togusa et Aramaki se distinguent sensiblement du lot : ils sont ici bien plus caractérisés, ce qui leur donne une véritable humanité. Car, l'héroïne froide et pragmatique, n'est paradoxalement pas le personnage le plus intéressant de tout l'univers Ghost in the Shell -en tout cas dans cette série et dans les mangas y compris.

A se demander si cette chienne de garde a un "ghost" et d'ailleurs, sa présence dans les mangas de papier n'était surtout qu'un prétexte pour nous mettre une bonnasse cybernétisée sous les yeux à la panoplie vestimentaire aussi délicieusement obscène qu'étendue (étendue, je veux dire vaste, pas étendue là... enfin bref).

Mais le plus surprenant concerne le traitement des tachikomas dans la série : ils ont assurément pris du "galon" et se révèlent décisifs dans l'intrigue et aussi fascinants que drolatiques : on ne peut que les adorer ! j'échange volontiers les strings du Major contre 10 barils de tachikomas !

Malgré ses défauts, la série entière exerce une forte attraction que le revisionnage n'entache certainement pas... ce qui me fait penser à la musique de Yoko Kanno qui supporte sans coup férir toute la saison : encore un atout dans la manche, décidément...… Expand
