Superb cinematography, ruined by mediocre Seto ring and the true causality being character development and storytelling logic.

Very mediocre writing. It's like GRRM gave them the major plot points and they slapped them into a script with as little thought as possible. Genuinely very sad for a great series to end this way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. About as bad as it could get. Objectively speaking this is some of the worst storytelling I have ever watched. Bran as king? Wasn't it not even a few episodes ago he refused winterfell because he was no longer brandon stark? Jon easily could have married Dany instead of murdering her.

Is this bittersweet enough for you? Or just plain old **** I hope the writers enjoyed butchering one of shows of all time.

    Thank god its over.

This is a vote for protest. Cause they had the budget and the material to do something great yet they chose the way of lazy writing and hurry. The writers should never work again on such big production. And Martin should be really pissed of seeing how they butchered his work. I will wait for the books!

Daenerys isn't a villain. Daenerys was sold, raped and betrayed, fought for what she wanted and won all obstacles, so can the writers treat her as the leader she is? Cause all we saw in the premiere was a weak and boring sidekick to Jon.

Jon Snow having been resurrected, finding out to be a Targaryen and true heir to the throne for nothing, Arya meeting the best mentors for nothing, Tyrion being dumbed out by the writers because of lack of imagination, all the prophecies and character development and foreshadowing.. All for f-ing nothing. Dumb & Dumber managed to ruin one of the best show ever just before the finish line. All those prophecies and things that were developing in the end were for nothing as they were not even used for a purpose. It might have been salvageable if they waited for the books to be finished or dedicate the entire season to the night king battle, while at the same time depicting very slowly but surely Daenerys as a villain, as they wanted to, or simply pick another route. And then! Only then dedicate another season to end all of it properly... Dany doing all that is just out of character, after freeing so many people, breaker of chains, after liberating slaves she just snaps like that. What the actual f-? Episode 6: Easily one of the most disappointing episodes not only of this season but of the whole series. There is a petition to remake it all but I doubt it will happen (i'd really be glad if it did). Season starting sub-par, below average of every season only for it to get worse each time.. after episode 1 or 2 it was just a free fall without a parachute. I feel bad for all the actors, engineers, artists and crew members who worked really really hard to deliver an astonishing thing visually, audio wise, fx wise and acting wise but which were ultimately went down the **** hole because of some stupid writers. The crew and actors deserve an 11/10 all day everyday (which is why this is a 3/10 and not a 0/10)... the **** writers? (negative) -10/10. This show deserved sooo much more yet got so much less because of incompetent writers. Truly sad to see some dumb writers defecate on a masterpiece where people put their heart and soul into. Although the ending is the worst ever, and the night king having deserved a whole season dedicated to it, this still remains one of the best shows ever. We'll see the real ending when the books come out and not this rushed lackluster thing they call the ending season to a series that took almost one decade to make. Jon Snow, true heir and king to the Iron Throne, king in the north and king beyond the wall. That's how it should have ended. Either him on the throne or nobody. Expand

Writing, has been horrific, cliche, deus-ex-machina every episode to subvert the audiences expectations, attention to detail went out the window this was painfully manifest in every battle scene to the invisible pirate ships that decloaked like Klingon Birds of Prey after firing anti-dragon bolts that would make a modern Anti-Air battery blush all this done in the name of creating some great cinematic experience, here's a clue,,, it doesn't! it's cheap and undeserving of what has been for the most part an excellent television series.
The decline that started somewhere around season 5 matured into a festering heap of dung by season 8.

This season was rushed and contained many plot holes such as several prophecies from the books that made it into the show were suddenly ignored in season 8. Episode 5 "The Bells" was the worst episode of GOT I have ever witnessed. They spent years showing how Dany was compassionate (D&D even in an analysis of one GOT episode that Dany wasn't her father) just to make her ruthless and brutal in the last two episodes so they could off her and have an 'edgy' show ending. Complete opposite of her character arc. Also with character development, they developed Jon Snow to be this honorable noble guy, who then kills his lover? Jon wouldn't do that let's be honest. Seemed like a crap way to fulfill the azor ahai prophecy (which was CLEARLY about the white walkers). The literal least likely to get the iron throne, was bloody Bran. WTF. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Season 8 was vastly disappointing and by far the worst season of them all. What made the series so good for me was because you always had expect the unexpected, so I guess in a way the final episode did just that. There was far to many episodes in this series that let it down. The end of the war with the white walkers was done in one episode so far to quick. It was a clearly one sided battle to the extent that it was embarrassing and unbelievable! A similar rant could be aimed at episode 7 which had similar characteristics. The deaths of the two hated Lanisters ended with them both being crushed to death under a pile of rubble when the whole world were guessing which main character would put them to the sword. In the end we were left with most of the main cast still standing after most of the world was wondering how many would be left.
Do I feel cheated? I would have to say a big fat yes!

I used to love this show, the story, characters, the sprawling setting. It's one of the first series that really made me care and root for the characters. Even the irredeemably evil ones were still exciting to watch.

But that all changed with the final season. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, its commonly known that George RR Martin has not released his final book of the franchise. The final two seasons were all HBO original content, and they could maintain the story in passable quality during the seventh season. However, when it came to ending the story it is rushed, anticlimactic, and immeasurably disappointing.

Characters started acting stupid, or just entirely unlike themselves. Loved heroes become confusingly insane, they lost all semblance of motivations from past seasons and suddenly became totally different people. The writer's excuse? A new motivation from past seasons is written in to skip development, in other words, retcons galore.

The dialogue became inanely simplistic or just repetitive and boring. So little of importance is ever said. Characters just stare off in the distance vacantly, then occasionally they make the most observances that anyone could have inferred on their own. What happened to the complex script full of setups, payoffs, and humanly written characters?

The only thing left to do now is scrub the awful ending out of my head by rewatching the past six seasons. Then I'll wait for George RR Martin to release the true ending because this is an absolute disgrace. D&D spit in the faces of millions of GOT fans. The best recommendation I can give this show is to watch the first six seasons (and the seventh if you want to test your patience) then forget about season eight.

For that reason I really cannot rank this season any higher than 2/10, because Game of Thrones was previously the pinnacle of incredible writing and storytelling.

The show was built on rich themes, complex characters, and competing ambitions. Compelling, insightful dialogue in the early seasons helped paint a rich story world and internal worlds for our heroes and villains alike. But in the last few seasons, those brilliant attributes have been de-emphasised in favour of spectacle. Many of the show's other strengths — production design, the score, a lot of the acting, the visual effects, the cinematography, some of the directing — continue on formidably. But the interiority of these characters and their relationship to a complex and changing story world has been sorely neglected. It's staggering that a show with every luxury in terms of budget, time, and talent could choose with such hubris to spurn its origins. Daenerys is the hardest hit by this, presented in the end like a two-dimensional cardboard cutout rushed from complex protagonist to antagonist/villain in an episode and a half. Foreshadowing is not story or character development. Foreshadowing sows the seeds of character development, and with Daenerys, we needed to see the "good" seeds wither and the seeds of the "bad" flourishing before we could really see and understand her trajectory. Good tragedy can be tremendously cathartic and satisfying if we see the sheer inevitability of where people end up, as the product of their own decisions and those around them. Dany's arc could have been an epically tragic one, but that opportunity was squandered. We could be debating the choice to make this the end point — because choosing to have two "mad queens" consumed by power and greed while a bunch of men are presented as the moral compasses of the show, and the only ones worthy of wielding power, could be troublesome. But we can't even sufficiently do that because the exposition of that journey was so purely executed. That's to say nothing of all the interesting and profoundly relevant themes that the show has raised over the years, and which seasons seven and eight have treated with scant regard. We already knew war was hell. We knew people were flawed, often tragically. We knew this was not a happy ending story. So the only thing that makes the journey worthwhile (for those who still think story trumps spectacle) is seeing how those characters struggle with themselves, with each other, with their environments before they commit to the courses that lead them to their final destinations. Inadequate time was spent setting that up. That, unfortunately, will be the show's legacy. Doing full orders of seasons seven and eight at 10 episodes a season may have gone a long way to keeping the show coherent. But, unfortunately, it betrayed itself — and us. Expand
