Fortitude has a lot going for it, but it lacks a unifying focus or center of gravity. Scenes seem slapped together without much forethought and with little connective tissue.

Fortitude is great to look at and will eventually provide the basic pleasure of a convoluted mystery solved, but it’s a distinctly chilly piece of storytelling.

Simply being cryptic, though, doesn’t really advance the story, and at a some point, as hypnotic as all those snowy backdrops are, it’s easy to grow impatient with the assiduous, disjointed nature of the plotting.

ItFortitude lacks a coherent plot and the storyline that it has is contrived and annoying. The characters are undeveloped and un-engaging. It seems as though the writers tried to superimpose humanity on them by creating an absurd degree of emotional turmoil for every main character that manifested in soap opera revelations and melodramatic confrontations and speeches at many points in each episode. Because the characters uniformly lack pathos, it just felt like an embarrassing display of emotion without context. It also made this cast of fine actors appear to be overacting much of the time. Points for the visual experience only. Full Review »

Despite its intriguing premise and awesome setting, t's probably the poorest-quality BBC series I've ever seen. Acting quality is limited, cliches are abundant, dialogue is what you'd expect from some dumb network primetime show in the US. Stanley Tucci is useless. The sheriff - while very easy on the eyes - has a totally unbelievable school-kid crush that reduces him to middle-school maturity. Just awful all-around - exacerbated by its untapped potential.
