Ferrell's genuine reverence for the national pastime and his noble goal make it a breezily feel-good hour. [11 Sep 2015, p.55]

Between the broadcast excerpts and play-by-play commentary, Ferrell Takes The Field conveys the excitement of pulling off this massive stunt, a gee-whiz sincerity that comes through even when the star is acting like the helicopter parked in center field is part of a day’s work for a major leaguer.

Ferrell may never make Cooperstown, he’s a shoo-in for funniest guy in the US.

Ferrell Takes the Field may not be overly funny, but it’s amusing, especially for baseball fans.

ThoseAn amusing comedy special where Will Ferrell raises money for a great charity by playing professional baseball. It's a brief project. Those hoping to actually see Ferrell play during his attempt to break a record by playing 10 positions for 10 different baseball teams in one day are going to be disappointed. The focus here is on watching Ferrell be Ferrell.

It's not the funniest special out there. There are enough amusing comments and small gags from Ferrell to make it a pretty amusing mockumentary, but big laughs are lacking. The enjoyment factor is brought on by Ferrell's clear passion for this project. His ability to commit is what makes it enjoyable.

It's not a laugh riot or even a real look at Ferrell playing baseball. It's simply an interesting project that Ferrell uses for good ends (raising money for a charity). There is plenty to enjoy in this short special even if it is lacking overall. There are still reasons to check it out if you are curious and I doubt you'll find it to be a waste of time. It hasn't got everything, but what is has got is pretty entertaining.
