As a fan of the original show, this is a swing and a miss for this spin off. I could sum it's plot up as this: "Junkie knows something weird is happening, nobody else gives half of a f***, and would rather show off their acting chops in slow, boring "character development" tangent stories for the next hour."

In the original show's pilot, we have a car chase which leads to a dazed and confused Rick Grimes waking up from a coma to find himself in a terrifying hellhole. It was exciting and creepy.

In 'Fear of the Walking Dead', we have a stoner getting hit by a car, getting locked up inside a hospital (makes little sense), and half an hour of whining by apathetic LAPD members and a 'Stand and Deliver' style classroom drama that just drags on and on for some time. Apathetic is the best word here, because it doesn't seem like anyone cares what's going on. Even when the zombies show up, it doesn't feel exciting...and that's a bad sign for this spin-off.

Huge fan of TWD. Fear The Walking Dead is garbage. Bad acting, bad story, bad pacing, bad directing, boring cinematography. There is nothing of any value here. This show is an insult to TWD and is doing a disservice to the franchise. They need to cancel this ASAP.

    Utter ****

The show is closer to "Fear the Government" than it's original title. The only episode that is any way entertaining at all is the last one and even that one s full of zombie cliches. The characters are boring, the story is terrible and the show as a whole is an effortless dull cash grab.

Would not recommend, will certainly not come back for the second season.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a big fan of TWD as a social commentary. This companion series could have been so much more. It touched lightly on the ethical & moral issues of initially understanding what was happening, and then dealing with the infected and the zombies. It also dealt with the mistrust of authority and communication between them and the people at various stages.
But it could have taken a lot more time to really explore those themes, and also to explain how it all started and how the authorities understood it and tried to deal with it, to consider things from their perspective (govt, police, army) as well as the people, to consider the "tipping points" when things got out of hand, either because of the rioting, or when the scale became so large that areas had to be abandoned, how major infrastructure like power failed.
Instead, after just 6 episodes, we are already post-apocalyptic. There is so much more this could have been. I'm disappointed.

I always thought the strength of the Walking Dead rested on its characters who sink deep into your memory and stay there forever. You mourn every loss, anticipate every episode, feel relief whenever the characters are given a few minutes' worth of respite. Fear the Walking Dead is the complete opposite of that - basically all the characters are **** annoying, and such a strong reaction is a huge achievement considering how bland, lifeless and dull they are. You literally don't give a flying **** if any of them dies; in fact, you're rooting for some of them to be torn to pieces and stop irritating you. The mother looks like an ugly alligator, the daughter is too beautiful to be even vaguely believable as an actual person, the romance between two alpha males is hilariously forced, the father... etc., etc. There's some depth to the ex-torturer, but that's all. Now you see the problem - if you wanna the main cast to be devoured, that's a sign of some pretty disastrous character creation.

We could go on and list dozens of other gripes people have been mentioning - pacing issues, stupid decisions, recycled plot points from the Walking Dead (actually verging on plagiarism in some episodes) - but it's all a side-note to the main downer: the weakest, most boring, uninspired and insipid characters I've seen in a TV series in my life. Oh, and if you expected this series to give you the answers the Walking Dead never provided... well, you're gonna be disappointed on that front as well.

So there you go, a complete failure in every possible respect, at best, it could serve as a form of guilty pleasure for the fans of the original masterpiece to poke fun at, a rubber doll with an unchanging expression on its rubber face on which you can vent your anger with friends and criticise every single second of this massive disappointment.

    Enjoy. At your own peril.

This show is a train wreck, and needs to be taken off the air. Otherwise, it needs an overhaul, new writers, stronger and more interesting characters who are capable of growing, not alienating everyone. There must be a leader in this series somewhere - a person who should really be at the helm making better decisions than Madison. And honestly, why is Madison even needed? She brings nothing useful to the table. Alicia and Nick are promising - Alicia is growing, Nick puts himself out there & tries to help. Somebody in charge of this show needs to open their eyes. Wait, maybe 'Madison' is in charge of the show - that certainly would explain a lot. (BTW, I do not blame the actors - they follow the director's lead and the writers script). Rating it a (1) for either kill it or revamp it. I don't give a crap if it is a spin off - as a spin off it always had big shoes to follow after, but the way it is now is a poor excuse for giving up an hour of your life each week. It certainly is not entertainment. Expand

I have been watching this show since season one. The plot/storylines is not that bad. I like when they were at the hotel i would have liked to see that played out more, i think they left that storyline too quick. I just think the actors/characters are not likable. If there were different actors playing the parts maybe it would not be so boring i could care less who dies on the show

I hope it gets better, but so far not a great start. The writing, characters & story are somewhat muddled, just not strong at all (not all bad, but certainly not good either, and nowhere near as good as TWD pilot). I'll keep watching in hopes it gets better, and really, it's the strength of TWD that has me interested in FTWD.

I think the first mistake people make when watching this is assuming that it will either be identical to 'The Walking Dead' or that it will at least hold true the same antics and situations. It's important to treat this as a completely separate entity (which it is). It is not a companion series. That being said, I find the show to be average. It's hard to judge a show off of two episodes, but in 2015 producers know that if a series doesn't suck you in by the first two episodes, the rest of it is likely to fail. I could be wrong, but it seems like it's going to be the same old predictable plot where the virus breaks out, they're stuck in the city and are trying to escape. Everything in between is just fluff. The acting is average at best and none of the characters are relatable even in the slightest bit. Since it is Robert Kirkman, I will give it until the end of season 1 but I doubt the series is going to take a hard left and take off so I give it a 6 as it stands. Expand

When it is on hiatus, I just get saddened by how long I have to wait to continue the journey with the characters that I have grown to love. So, when I found out about this show and how it was going to be a different direction from the first, I immediately felt the urge to give it a try and not be so skeptical. That horror T.V can work. I am very happy to say that this show definitely pulls it's own weight. What I love most about this show is the different angle in which it is playing. The Walking Dead focuses on survival, whereas Fear the Walking Dead focuses on infection, and the outbreak which started it all, and how people are coming to terms with the chaos that is caused from it. It works. Very well. Because it becomes terrifying in a sense that WE as a viewer know what has happened and how to deal with certain scenarios or situations, but seeing as these characters are in the midst of the outbreak and not the aftermath, they are more vulnerable and oblivious to the dangers and how to face them effectively. And since this is the beginning of the outbreak, the zombies are more "fresh" and not so obvious of what they truly are, which heightens the intensity of the situations that occur on hand .The characters are all portrayed very well and the city is a welcome atmosphere as opposed to the countryside. People who are complaining about not having enough zombies are just ignorant to the fact that they just want the horror part of the story. That is just one part of it . There is a story being told and I am glad that the shows producers are not forgetting that. I would definitely give this show a chance. So far its a great opening to what we have come to know of this Universe and I am very eager to see where they take it . Bravo. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The pilot for this show was slow and the writing was terrible. I get the idea of the show is partly to explore the effects on everyday people. That is part of the charm of the original series. It is not all about the political elite and extraordinary heroes. It about the human spirit and how various personalities tap into that spirit with varying outcomes.
Okay, so why are these characters doing stupid stuff that no one would do. Why do the police fail to investigate a place that has been named as crack den where a gruesome murder just took place. Sure the witness is a crackhead, but still. So instead, the kids step dad - for no good reason - decides to go and investigate the crack-den gruesome murder scene himself - at night. Sure enough, its true. But does he call the cops? Nope, him and his wife decide to go back and check it out again, alone. Yep, still a crack-den scene of gruesome murder. Does anyone call the cops? No. But then the wife's judgement is so good that she decides to keep the knife wielding of a student just their little harmless secret.

And so on. The characters are just cardboard cut outs, their actions the consequence of just unaccountably stupid plot twists.

Me thinks the writers of this series have contempt for their audience.

The setting is LA, which they really take advantage of showing more minority characters, which isn't bad, but nobody here is interesting or makes you care for them with Z-Day right around the corner. The main character is a junkie who plays being a junkie loser quite terribly. We're introduced to his family and they're as equally as annoying, from the **** mom, to the annoying teenage daughter all the troupes of a bad drama are represented. We get a couple of side characters that do little if nothing for the plot and any glimpses of zombies are short and don't have the same fell as they do in WD. It's not perfect. I could gripe about the things I don't like, but they are minor when compared to the fact that I'm really enjoying watching how things progressed while Rick was in a coma. It offers nothing in the way of explaining the zombies (that's a good thing), but is showing really well how panic and mobs of humans actually paved the way for zombies to swoop right in and eat everyone.

If you want to enjoy this show, turn off your silly expectations about it being like TWD, and just watch while convincingly-real and flawed humans deal with a fast-moving crisis that no one seems to understand. It's easy for viewers to forget that these new characters don't have years of experience in the zombie world, so it just looks like some weird virus that makes people crazy and hard to kill.

A lot of talk and no action. This is one of the greatest disappointments in television history. Why they have chosen a slow, no, ploddingly slow told narrative about a group of characters we care very little about and even find extremely unlikable at times is a total mystery.

The 90 minute pilot begins with a great little scene of a young girl who has been impaled making some unlucky former friend her morning breakfast when she is discovered munching on him by her boyfriend who it turns out is a drug addict in a shooting gallery and who becomes such a little creep that 30 minutes later you wish she had made him into her lunch. I just hate this guy! He's portrayed by an actor that looks as if he has been cast only because he looks like Johnny Depp and who lacks either the ability to make his character likable or is reacting to bad direction, writing or all three. He also looks way too healthy to be a heroine addict.

The story continues to go downhill from there with long setups to very little delivery and a frustrating lack of information on what's happening in the greater world. The show was sold to us on the premise of us being able to see the fall of civilization, what we only saw the aftermath of in the original show. In this one there isn't even a news report seen on a television in the background of frightened reporters giving terrifying reports from around the globe. All we have are characters that are either despicable like the very predicable Army officer seen in the fifth episode or incredibly weak and homogenized that even after seeking and KNOWING what the dead can do still refuse to put them down. One lead character, the mother of the druggie and a nurse at the local high school is forced to kill one of her co-workers by bludgeoning him and then goes home with absolutely no visible feeling whatsoever, never tells her husband, (the weak one) and not a drop of blood on her. We are now at the fifth episode of what is a six episode season and we have YET to see more than two or three of the dead walking at any given time and no real action! Los Angeles is supposed to be overrun and we have seen perhaps a total of ten walkers. Even the scenes of chaos when everyone supposedly goes nuts and riots when law and order breaks down is totally unconvincing. They just look like a bunch of extras hired out of the teenage hangouts at the local mall hired to throw paper around and jump up and down a lot on abandoned cars.

Maybe it was budgetary reasons that kept the show from being bigger and wider in scope but if that were the case then they never should have attempted it in the first place. The promos for the show gave us great shots of people running screaming and a walker being shot down or taking a bite out of someone but those scenes were the ONLY such scenes in the entire series! This is like the mediocre films made that give you all the good scenes in the trailer leaving you really angry that you threw away your dollars on tripe punctuated by good stuff you have already seen. I still hold out hope that his series will finally take off and show us what we deserve but as of now I feel that I have wasted five hours of my life.

I understand that a second season is already green lit and in production. If it's not better, a WHOLE LOT better than this dull, dragging, morose mess then there will definitely not be a third. This is doubly frustrating as I could have thought up, shot, edited completed something far more interesting and terrifying in my sleep. This isn't the horror show we were promised. It's a Dr. Phil episode with far less interesting drama and no more horror than a television spot for a horror film.

Sadly, the interpersonal drama is akin to what you might expect from an after-school special designed to teach young people about the wonders of diversity. I found it nauseating, and not in a flesh-eating way - more like a banal, mind-numbing way. In addition to the oh-so-wonderful diverse blended family, we are treated with characters ham-hamdedly intended to appeal to preteens. The heartthrob teenage boy will obviously clean up his act, but is currently quite annoying, as his bored sister. The classroom scenes, supposedly showing us the wonder of a teacher reaching out to urban youth, are straight out of the 1960s.

Based on the depth of TWD, I suppose I'll give this one a little more of my time, but it's painful to do so.

The show's underlining horror theme tends to be more profound when the antagonist isn't some kind of cattle to be exploited, into how many more they can kill each episode in attempts to outbid their previous. Heck we can place odds on how many more will get slaughtered in each Walking Dead episode. A show that has lost some of it's way on who, or what the antagonist is.

I agree that this series needs all kind of improvement, the concept is some where out there, yet to be quite found, but it needs more to compete. I want to see them shoot certain escapees, I want to see them violently restrain, possibly gun butting, forcing those people away, because they are as scared, but are more powerful. I want to see hysteria, panic, fear, blood and gore. I know they think that they are slowly building up, trying not to give much away., stretching out their air time. However this show will always be predictable, in order to combat that, throw more shocking terrifying horror in, not just some moody drama, or some supposedly horrific backgrounds. This from anything upon the start was always gonna be chesse.

I'll put a green light because I want this show to improve, despite of all of it's shakiness, making me cringe for fast-forwarding. I may bite these words, if all this show does is try to copy and paste, or just pretend..

a good beginning and I hope it moves along quickly and does not drag too much; I say a good beginning because the original show never gave us that beginning!

Fear the Walking Dead is heavy on spooky atmosphere and light on zombies (they’ll be known as “infected,” not walkers, we’re told) in the early going.

Fear the Walking Dead pulls off a great feat in prequel land: using that nagging sense of inevitability to its advantage. It shouldn’t work, but it totally does.

Fear the Walking Dead is a wonderfully refreshing reboot that reminds viewers of the exciting, moving, and dramatic potential The Walking Dead had in its first season - a potential the show has all but squandered.
