Even better than the original series (which is hard to beat). It's intentionally slow to give viewers time to relate with the characters before they are plunged into the apocalypse. Great acting, great directing, great story. This is by far the best Zombie-Genre show on TV right now. Here's hoping its success breeds more Zombie series!

I honestly wasn't expecting much of this spin off, I thought it was just gonna be a low-quality copy cad of the actual show directed by a bunch of kidos.

My mind is completely blown at how good the 1st episode was, it really has the feeling the actual show has and they did really good in making up an interesting story to follow. Can't wait for episode 2.

I was a lil bumbled that they were gonna 'milk' the franchise. I knew the new show would be 'good' based on critic reviews. Honestly, the show kinda blew my mind a little. Solid acting, excellent atmosphere(Cali-style), fresh take. It is a 10 for me.

The development is new show is so slow, and more slow that the previous installment from the feel of this "plot" (and that is good!) Because it will take us in a journey to understand and be more interested in the characters.

And of course it is intensive, because is building the "hype" / "excitement" for the moment we all waiting for, the zombie break trough. But as we go there, we get to know and love or hate each of the main characters and so forth as we continue down that road, but yet doing it in a slow sensitive manner by tangling us, the viewers, in this interesting slow phase perspective and life of this families in which is building a few new interesting premises from what we know already. So each of this characters that we still do not know nothing about, but yet we still know the obvious reasons of each one.

Something new and different from the previous installment (as I mention) it is for sure a great and a different intensive new cool experience and perspective from this "beforemath" soon to be a "aftermath"

I think it was GreaT! I don't get the people comments, specially when we know that "Fear the Walking Dead" is THE BEGINNING. I really like the show FTWD and I see this tv show as completely separated from TWD.

FTWD is not TWD and we shouldn't compare them. I'm sick of people comparing the 2 shows.

I like Z Nation, TWD, FTWD, Dexter, Breaking Bad, Gotham and many others.

Amazing character development so far, not so much meaningless action as TWD first episodes but hey thats TWD is for. Personally I prefer the approach this show is taking over just people you dont even know getting eaten all over the place. Also, Im sure we can expect plenty of that as the series builds and gets further into the breakout. 10/10

A spin-off that takes to the start of the zombie apocalypse. As a result this premiere season is a different beast than it's parent series, and not just because it follows a completely different cast of characters.

Given that the zombie apocalypse is just kicking off at the start of this show, the actual number of zombie encounters is limited. The focus is more on drama rather than action. Here we get to watch the characters struggle as the world around them falls apart and they try to understand what is happening. It's tense in a different way. The drama and characters are well-written, even if stupid decisions are made from time to time.

The show looks fantastic. It's got darker lighting all around which gives it a more gothic feel. The zombies look amazing. The lack of decomposition makes them even creepier.

Walking Dead fans can take pleasure in a new chapter in this expanded universe and my fellow zombie fanatics can enjoy a story that takes place at the very start of it all. If you can forgive the typical goofy moments in the writing carrying over from the parent show as well as more of a focus on drama, then this is another Walking Dead show to enjoy.

People that love the zombie genre because they're intrigued by the psychological impact a zombie outbreak would have on society, this show is right up your alley. By the end of the first episode, you see the first signs of an outbreak, and some characters really questioning if what they're seeing is real. It makes you think what people would do if this really happened, and that's what makes this show special so far. It feels real. Relatable. When it is on hiatus, I just get saddened by how long I have to wait to continue the journey with the characters that I have grown to love. So, when I found out about this show and how it was going to be a different direction from the first, I immediately felt the urge to give it a try and not be so skeptical. That horror T.V can work. I am very happy to say that this show definitely pulls it's own weight. What I love most about this show is the different angle in which it is playing. The Walking Dead focuses on survival, whereas Fear the Walking Dead focuses on infection, and the outbreak which started it all, and how people are coming to terms with the chaos that is caused from it. It works. Very well. Because it becomes terrifying in a sense that WE as a viewer know what has happened and how to deal with certain scenarios or situations, but seeing as these characters are in the midst of the outbreak and not the aftermath, they are more vulnerable and oblivious to the dangers and how to face them effectively. And since this is the beginning of the outbreak, the zombies are more "fresh" and not so obvious of what they truly are, which heightens the intensity of the situations that occur on hand .The characters are all portrayed very well and the city is a welcome atmosphere as opposed to the countryside. People who are complaining about not having enough zombies are just ignorant to the fact that they just want the horror part of the story. That is just one part of it . There is a story being told and I am glad that the shows producers are not forgetting that. I would definitely give this show a chance. So far its a great opening to what we have come to know of this Universe and I am very eager to see where they take it . Bravo. Expand

I've been a fan since the beginning and I was a little weary about this spin off. After watching it though I got to say I was glad to see that the starting point is 180 degrees in the opposite direction from The Walking Dead (TWD). I enjoy that we are actually getting a bigger sense of who these people are and what their personalities are like before all the chaos begins. The characters are definitely relatable in many ways to the real world. I see a lot of connections, though I also see a lot of questions. I for one want to know more about the kid who brought the knife. He seems to know something but nobody is giving him the time. That's probably just a crumb but its one that should be followed up on. He seems like he knows more than he's really telling. The dad is a pretty cool guy, the sister seems like a bit of a **** but she's a teen so that's typical. The son well.. I kinda feel like I'm watching Slater from Dazed and Confused but he's strung and how he reacts and the end of the show also tells me that there's more to this character that has yet to be revealed. The mother seems like somebody who is just trying to manage the situation rather then letting it hit her so she can deal with it. I appreciate the fact that it started out slow because you got to see where the cracks in everything began to show up. Their world appears to be on a train that has left the station and picking up speed to the ultimate chaos that follows. I can't wait to see what happens next week. Expand

Perhaps it was my lowered expectations, but four episodes in, I have to admit that the show has grown on me. For a concept that is easy to write off as a cash-grab, this spin-off will pleasantly surprise those with a keen sense and appreciation of nuance.

Fear the Walking Dead shares the high production values, ominous pacing, and heavy, brooding existentialism of the original show. It does not, however, feel like a carbon copy in a different setting, which had been my original assumption and fear. I find it amusing that some critics pan the characters for their questionable behavior and sometimes petty politics, because I have to wonder how some viewers can overlook the obvious nature of these sort of design choices.

As promised by the producers, this is a horror-drama set an entire country apart from the original show, but it may as well be a different world all-together. The suburban sprawl is a fresh deviation from the original show's woodland settings, and the west coast setting only further highlights the differences in attitude and mentality between this cast and the last. We're not following the stories of grizzled combat-vets like Rick, Michonne, and Daryl, because that's what the original show is for. Fear the Walking Dead instead offers interesting and fresh dynamics between an extended family whose relationships had already been troubled prior to the decay of civilization.

It's not so much the threat of impending death or the search for safety that drives this show, but rather, the anxiety of panic and uncertainty. Of course, both shows will overlap with some similar themes, but their primary focus is different enough to make this new series feel fresh. Rather than being a show focused on man versus nature, this show focuses on the conflict of man versus man.

While we have yet to see how the show will evolve over time, it's exciting to contemplate how it evolves, and how the producers will continue to keep it from feeling like the original.

Yeah, zombies everywhere, but they are in a more densely populated area. There will be more conflict between survivors and people holding onto a civilization that no longer exists.

While the family dynamic is a bit cliche, the point is that when anything initially begins (particularly a pandemic event), people casually ignore the signs and life moves on UNTIL they see it with their own eyes. It WOULD be a bit dull UNTIL it got personal. I felt that this episode did a great job with this aspect. No, the city hasn't gone to hell yet, but I'm sure we'll get there.(Further, we already saw that in Atlanta). I don't think that this pilot was ever going to be about blood and gore, but more about how people could believe or comprehend what they were seeing and how they would react. You see how it starts....quiet paranoia. This will likely lead to civil unrest, which will lead to dinner bells for the walkers.

I trust that the blood and spitting guts are to come, but in a way I am very interested to see how a couple of teachers and their kids will enter and MAYBE survive some of the zombie apocalypse. I doubt very much that we will be disappointed.

Looking forward to next week. Solid 8 for me. Not mind blowing, but far from disappointed.

FtWD is much better than I was expecting it to be when the side project was first announced. Good cast, great ambience, and the looming dread of it all knowing what's to come from viewing the parent series for the last 5 seasons. Good stuff.

The cast is quite good since the production value was higher than when first TWD was made - we don't see any Carls or Shanes whose performances make your eyes bleed and make Kristen Stewart seem like an Oscar winner.

The pilot episode is not promising, but it just gets better and better by the end of the first season. Most reviewers here saw the first episode (probably not even in its entirety) and thought "where is Rick, what is this, I miss Carl" and proceeded to bash the show for that reason. In reality, the production quality, filming, writing, even audio - modern, engaging, deep storytelling - something the original series never achieved. The fear is palpable, not just from these scary dead people, but also from the authorities which are themselves scared, their motives unknown, creating a widespread sense of insecurity and uncertainty. The show tries to decentralise the characters, so you don't know which one might die next - unlike Rick, whose life was known to surpass the 8 seasons without even watching beyond the pilot episode.

I am unsure if the show continues to positively surprise into the second season since the initial apocalypse time frame will come to an end, bringing a monotone existence of scavenging-sleeping-scavenging or training-sleeping-fleeing we see throughout the seasons of the original series, which often had you forget about the walkers, and worry more about the soap opera drama with a regular mishap leading to a character's death now and then. And of course the ridiculous conflicts with other groups that are always so unrealistically hostile.

I expect the same to happen with Fear TWD, maybe even beginning with season 2, but I hope they managed to bring a new flavour to the same rinse-repeat story that we see from the 3rd to the last season of the original show.

I am a fan of the original show, but the truth is the show is quite mediocre and the only thing that kept it interesting is the post-zombie-apocalypse premise, since the writing is predictable and poor, while the cast is mostly not talented, to say the least. You'd just wait for a thriller scene when someone dies, while the rest was unsuccessful and boring "character building". FTWD has a chance to utilise the premise and revitalise the idea.

The show's underlining horror theme tends to be more profound when the antagonist isn't some kind of cattle to be exploited, into how many more they can kill each episode in attempts to outbid their previous. Heck we can place odds on how many more will get slaughtered in each Walking Dead episode. A show that has lost some of it's way on who, or what the antagonist is.

I agree that this series needs all kind of improvement, the concept is some where out there, yet to be quite found, but it needs more to compete. I.E in the riot I want to see a riot from the rioters POV, not some supposed heroes in their bunker. pretending to be scared. Nobody should is bulletproof in the zombie apocalypse, please shock me, all men must die. If the militray starts making prison camps I want to see oppression. I want to see them shoot certain escapees, I want to see them violently restrain, possibly gun butting, forcing those people away, because they are as scared, but are more powerful. I want to see hysteria, panic, fear, blood and gore. I know they think that they are slowly building up, trying not to give much away., stretching out their air time. However this show will always be predictable, in order to combat that, throw more shocking terrifying horror in, not just some moody drama, or some supposedly horrific backgrounds. This from anything upon the start was always gonna be chesse.

I'll put a green light because I want this show to improve, despite of all of it's shakiness, making me cringe for fast-forwarding. I may bite these words, if all this show does is try to copy and paste, or just pretend..

It's not perfect. I could gripe about the things I don't like, but they are minor when compared to the fact that I'm really enjoying watching how things progressed while Rick was in a coma. It offers nothing in the way of explaining the zombies (that's a good thing), but is showing really well how panic and mobs of humans actually paved the way for zombies to swoop right in and eat everyone.

If you want to enjoy this show, turn off your silly expectations about it being like TWD, and just watch while convincingly-real and flawed humans deal with a fast-moving crisis that no one seems to understand. It's easy for viewers to forget that these new characters don't have years of experience in the zombie world, so it just looks like some weird virus that makes people crazy and hard to kill.

It certainly is scary enough to see such a disease spread through crack houses and perhaps the "fear" could be directed in a humanitarian view as a deterrent to drug abuse. It would certainly scare some people strait just seeing this.

However, I'm tired of seeing Los Angels and New York City as the setting for all TV and Motion picture productions and found the original series setting in the south great and refreshing in general. Most likely a pandemic would more likely originate in Areas of high population density and without adequate infrastructure. Those that experienced and survived super storm Katrina know all too well what happens when civilization collapses.

Sifting through the horror, guts, and blood, the opportunity presents itself to expand on how well FEMA is prepared to step in and hopefully slow down the collapse so we can see how well all the preppers living off grid will manage.

I could be wrong, but it seems like it's going to be the same old predictable plot where the virus breaks out, they're stuck in the city and are trying to escape. Everything in between is just fluff. The acting is average at best and none of the characters are relatable even in the slightest bit. I really dislike how one character who seems to be cognizant of an impending zombie apocalypse (brings a weapon to school, gathers up supplies, forebodes the end to civilization) shows no fear or urgency or bother to explain how he came to that realization and was rather emotionally apathetic the whole time. Being in a room of 14 people who all completely hated this, I was the only one who tried to defend it for, "trying to build character development." In the reality of things, this is one of the worst premiers I've ever seen. I hope the rest of the Season isn't this boring, predictable, and poorly written.

As a big fan of the Walking dead, I had high hopes for this show. To say I am greatly disappointed is an understatement. Its boring, its drawn ount way too long, and at its core, its a cash grab meant to cash in on the popularity of thr Wakling Dead.

But no this clever rouse takes us a few days before the all out infection of the country. Not saying that's a bad way to start, but when you're given a very limited run you need to start off with a BANG, not a fart. The setting is LA, which they really take advantage of showing more minority characters, which isn't bad, but nobody here is interesting or makes you care for them with Z-Day right around the corner. The main character is a junkie who plays being a junkie loser quite terribly. We're introduced to his family and they're as equally as annoying, from the **** mom, to the annoying teenage daughter all the troupes of a bad drama are represented. We get a couple of side characters that do little if nothing for the plot and any glimpses of zombies are short and don't have the same fell as they do in WD. We as the audience knows what's coming, but everyone in the show is completely clueless to the world around them. I was going to rate this show lower, but I want to see if they can improve. So far though, I was not fearing the Walking Dead, just starting to root for them. Expand

My judgement is a little biased because of TWD, but the show felt like an utter disappointment. I prefer watching others zombie shows such as Izombie, Z Nation, and of course TWD.

Thus far after two episodes I give this show a 4 out of 10. It's not that I have something against character plots and building a story.... but I feel like for one reason or another that so far the story hasn't unfolded naturally and believably. There wasn't many stand-out moments as of now either. I will revisit my review of the show in a few more episodes, but not a fantastic start IMO.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I admit that reviewing after a single episode is a little quick but it isn't the greatest start for the show.

My biggest issue is that none of the characters are initially sticking out to me. The son, I actually found myself hoping that he was going to the zombies a couple of times. Of course they had to go down the route of him being the first to see them. He's a drug addict who was hallucinating after all. Excuse me while I tear my hair out. To be honest, it would have been nice to skip the disbelief phase as it's always a frustrating moment for the viewer any time it's done. The mom and father seem decent enough though a bit forgettable as characters. We'll have to see how they develop. The daughter, of course, you'd be forgiven if you forgot that she existed. I feel like she had a total of 5 minutes of screen time.

Unfortunately, the main focus of this first episode was more about what the son saw in the church as opposed to adequately introducing us to the characters. I'm a little skeptical as to why the father would investigate the church by himself. I gave it a pass the first time but was a bit in disbelief when he brought his wife around for the second trip. A building with a history of violence and drug deals to which they were well aware of.

Of course the big elephant in the room during the entire episode for most people was, when was all hell going to break loose. Many people on here seem to be complaining that it moved too slowly and that it needed more action. "Get to the zombies already." It is a TV show, though, so the story needs to complete a marathon run. If you want non-stop zombie killing action, might I recommend a 2-hour zombie flick.

In my opinion, I was a little disappointed that it happened so soon. Here I was excited that this show was going to have the opportunity to build up a solid character base before the zombies truly came into the picture. Obviously it is a premiere so they have to give the people what they came for but The Walking Dead prided itself on the characters. I was hoping for the same here.

What we have so far are a mom and dad with a hackneyed story line of raising their troubled kids. To be honest, I don't see myself connecting with any of them though I could be wrong. The acting seemed a bit spotty but not terrible. I guess we'll see how it goes but I'm not holding my breath.

After 1st EP, I said. Ok, it's normal, the show maybe needs time to get the Fear part. I just watched the 3rd Ep, and it's still as boring. The point of TWD is "what do we have to do to survive". FTWD, in comparison, is just another family soap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a big fan of TWD as a social commentary. This companion series could have been so much more. It touched lightly on the ethical & moral issues of initially understanding what was happening, and then dealing with the infected and the zombies. It also dealt with the mistrust of authority and communication between them and the people at various stages.
But it could have taken a lot more time to really explore those themes, and also to explain how it all started and how the authorities understood it and tried to deal with it, to consider things from their perspective (govt, police, army) as well as the people, to consider the "tipping points" when things got out of hand, either because of the rioting, or when the scale became so large that areas had to be abandoned, how major infrastructure like power failed.
Instead, after just 6 episodes, we are already post-apocalyptic. There is so much more this could have been. I'm disappointed.

I, like many others, can't help but compare 'Fear the Walking Dead' with 'The Walking Dead' and while I really hoped it would either surpass or offer an alternative to the same ol' zombie stereotype. I did not. In fact, I was begging for SOMETHING in the first episode. Excitement maybe? Suspense? Better Acting? Something other than... well, boredom.

The casting is a bit weird. As if it was tailored to reflect more the southern demographics of the states (to which personally have no problem with in these dark times), but the characters are somehow off. I think whoever was who made the casting should get another job as there was no spark of genius or talent here but a lot of Hollywood narcissism totally cut out of real life.

The lack of alchemy for the casting and boring writing is what brings this series down.
Beyond that, the CGI for the boat are a sham, and the camera and scene work reveal a lack of talent or inspiration for an obvious commercial spin off of a walking dead series that will soon come to a conclusion.

In the end, it is quite funny to see that despite the fact that the word "Zombies" has fallen out of fashion after all the Romero's overrated movies of the 80's, the "walking dead" remain a stupidly resistant imagery of a backward America still stuck in its religious fundamentalism.

Yea, I love the walking dead series, but this one is running very, very, very slow.
I find myself fast forwarding through a ton of parts. I trying with all of my might to stick in there but it is just moving way too slow.
I like the actors, they are OK. Some are just frustrating, but it really needs to move faster. Nothing keeps me wanting to watch the next episode like Walking Dead

I still have hope that the show gets better and the acting in general is good.

When you go from Rick grappling with a post-apocalyptic world apologising to a zombie missing legs with incredible music in the background to scenes where Alicia and her impetuous teenager love obsession with some guy coupled with her adolescent rebellious nature dominating scenes it feels more like home and away episode than anything else. The script writer’s attempt to mix things up by having a drug addict suffer from withdrawal syndrome doesn’t really keep suspense or the story interesting either.

Disaster scenes feel cheap and fake which may point to a lack of funding. Riot scenes have a handful of riot police and protesters which is a stark contrast to the sheer calamity the show is trying to convey. The acting is poor and their characters feel forced rather than superb acting in the Walking Dead. Every scene is stretched out to ad nauseam, the dialogue is awful and the characters are monotone and boring.

There is nothing to compel you to watch it further.

In the original Walking Dead, the characters struggle with holding on to their humanity, asking themselves questions about who they are and what makes them good or evil. They slowly change into ruthless killers in order to survive and throughout their experiences we accept their behavior as just. Their evolution is painfully showcased throughout all 6 seasons and when they realize they are in a new world order we accept how they’ve changed.

In Fear the Walking Dead the same questions and results are only shown within 2 seasons and there is nothing different but a rehashed pitch from the original. By the end of season 2 the characters of FTWD have already accepted the new world order, all while Rick is still asleep in his coma. This hardly seems like the beginning of the end of the world.

This type of spin off shows the archive to spin is infinite without ever having to find an intersecting point with the original. But I wonder how many spin offs can they make before the audience moves on to a new series.

This is not what I expected when I heard of FTWD, I expected the characters with real and logical emotions, and a story that is in relation to the original series. I want to see ground zero of The Walking Dead. Where the disease started, how it spread, who tried to stop it, and what they did when it became uncontrollable.

The thematic questions Fear the Walking Dead should have are, “Can we stop the end of the world?” and “Is there hope for all of us?” This spin off is a rehashed pitch from the original, using the former as an outline all while changing characters and settings. The characters in FTWD left LA too soon, and they accepted the end of the world without a fight.

Also to add, the characters in FTWD have poor logic, which frustrates the audience, and also the series in general seems very half baked. Nothing new to see here... Or Fear.

Fear the Walking Dead is a wonderfully refreshing reboot that reminds viewers of the exciting, moving, and dramatic potential The Walking Dead had in its first season - a potential the show has all but squandered.
