While Everybody doesn't yet have top-notch writing, Romano manages to communicate something distinctive: He plays a beleaguered family man, but one who's happy about it. Not a dope and not a weasel, he's a fellow accepting his responsibilities. Ain't that unusual?

Low key in concept, in style of humor and in star power, it's that rarity: a comedy that manages to be very, very funny without making parents watching with their children very, very uncomfortable. It's not necessarily a kids' show; it just gets its laughs honestly, without being crass. [13 Sep 1996]

Might be the fall's funniest and most satisfying show. ... Smartly written and well cast, it sparkles with characters, situations and dialogue that owe more to real life than TV contrivances. [12 Sep 1996]

One of the sweet surprises of the season, a family sitcom that manages to be realistic without being either silly or mean-spirited. It's funny, too. [12 Sep 1996]

Romano has an easy-to-like style, a knowing wit delivered without Seinfeld's sharp ironic edges. This could be a sleeper hit. [14 Sep 1996]

So little of Raymond is actually new, yet almost all of it feels absolutely fresh. It reminds you how long it has been since we've seen a non-gimmicky, neither cutesy nor smutty, multigenerational family sitcom anchored by strong personalities with distinctly rib-tickling identities. The badinage with his wife plays nice and easy, like Home Improvement, while that with his parents and brother across the street has more of a Seinfeldian silliness.

Love, maybe not. But there's much to like, starting with Romano himself.

Mr. Romano has a knack for hilariously obsessing on life's most ordinary details. He's made for prime-time comedy, and "Everybody Loves Raymond" would seem to be his perfect vehicle. [13 Sep 1996]

Just cool the frantic efforts to be funny. Go for real family fun instead. [13 Sep 1996]

Bland ... Romano can be slightly amusing during his stand-up act, but his CBS sitcom is wallowing in wimpiness. [12 Sep 1996]

Everyone Loves Raymond is easily one of the best sitcom series I have ever seen. A strong point of this show is that it's basic reality stuff that happens. Its pretty much about everyday life/situations that happen everyday. Some of the episodes are "what if" moments and are always ended in hilarious results. I love the series and it won many awards along with their actors. A MUST watch series Full Review »
