Even though the story lines revolve mostly around the lives of teenagers, people of all ages and generations will relate to the themes of the struggle to find one's identity, addictions, depression, anxiety, love and loss. My only caveat is that this subject matter may be triggering for those currently experiencing or struggling with these issues . But if you can navigate some very uncomfortable feelings, it is a series that people can actually find informative and inspirational. Expand

The main highlights are acting, cinematography and the music. There's numerous different characters in the show and they are all perfectly believable especially in a show where so much range is required.

It looks beautiful which I honestly think is many HBO shows biggest strength. The colours in this are fantastic and really hold true to the saying of every frame a painting.

Finally, Labrinth does a great job on the soundtrack of this show and it really adds to the emotion of many scenes.

The only weaknesses of the show is that sometimes it feels very melodramatic and over-the-top (seriously Nate is like a caricature of a villain, he reminds of the bullies from 13 reasons why and I hated that show for not being believable). Additionally, the season finale was a bit of a mess and overstuffed. However, overall it's a show that's really good viewing and I for sure will check out season 2.

Don't trust the pearl-clutching critics who were afraid of this show. It's amazing. If you like TV shows that smell like roses and make you feel bubbly inside, maybe look elsewhere. This is like Last Exit to Brooklyn with high schoolers. Buckle up.

I do love how the shows flow from every plot, revealing its character backstory one by one as it creates a backstory for each character and makes the emotional connection with each character. Despite its great plots, the execution, in the end, a bit weak as it end without any closure, for example, Fez, Cassie and Mckay relationship. Nonetheless, it is a great show recommended Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name, Euphoria navigates the lives of a group of American high school teenagers and their experiences with mature topics. Showrunner Sam Levinson has created a series, unlike anything I've seen before. The cinematography is a big highlight, leaving viewers in awe with its vibrant angles and ways of making each scene so surreal.

The route Euphoria's story takes is smooth and detailed, leaving no one behind and making sure everyone is entertained. I must agree with the critics that the show's sexual content is quite abundant, though. These scenes do set up the narrative and each character's arc, but I just felt like it was too much. The story is still great despite all this, with Levinson's raw and impactful writing spectacularly acted out in a riveting 50-68 minutes each episode by the show's ensemble cast, which stars Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Eric Dane, Colman Domingo & more.

Another highlight is Labrinth's dreamlike score, which contributes to what makes Euphoria a stellar viewing experience. Though repetitive throughout, each song is used in a way that makes them timeless and catchy every time you hear them. The musical number portrayed in the season finale, written and composed by Labrinth, was very unexpected, but it delivered with lots of strength paired with Zendaya's vocals and Levinson's direction.

The topics Euphoria deals with are explicitly shown front and center, but behind all that is a series that displayed its potential with vibrancy and a detailed story that shows us the side of life that not many of us have ever experienced.

A full story was told and I applaud it for that. The characters became more rounded and dynamic than you might expect in a teen drama. Regarding cinematography, the lighting specifically was so hyper real it almost de-immersed me at times, but in a good way? I'm a sucker for eye candy (Snyder films are a guilty pleasure) so this show won me over on that alone, but there's also some good character building and some real standout concept episodes here. The inference of its main themes are muddled in this unfortunate complexity, and by the end of its eight episode run, the tantamount feeling one gains from its experience is the feeling of strangeness. Wether it’s a good or bad feeling is entirely up to the viewer. Upon my first viewing of the first season, I walked away feeling unfulfilled yet undeniably intrigued by the concepts this show puts across. While the messages and story arcs may be muddled at best, the show makes up for these faults by enlacing the show with an unmistakable and utterly unique style that can almost make up for the majority its faults. Like many of its references to hardcore drug use and the trials and tribulations of young adulthood, Euphoria has high highs, and low lows. When it’s all bound together, it creates an entirely unique package that, quite literally, is up for the individual to make or break it. As someone who has a joy for originality and new ideas, Euphoria season one left me unsatisfied, but yearning for something better to come from its ideas. The acting, the cinematography, and the inferences to the reality of drug use is where Euphoria truly soars, yet the shakiness of the storytellings and the narrative drop-off for many of its characters leaves the series in a bit of a mess. Yet like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Euphoria has the potential to be so much more than the sum of it’s parts, and according to HBO, we’ll see of it can all be resolved in the seasons to come. These characters are all surprisingly joyless for teenagers. The bits about addiction ring true because they're obviously from the creator's personal experience, but just about everything else about it doesn't work. It's overly sentimental and fails to give us a reason to care about any of the characters.

Inexplicably, season 2 of the show centers the last two episodes around a minor character that has barely been in the show up until that point. In theory that sounds interesting, but in practice it means it's impossible to care about her.

The cinematography has an identifiable style and generally looks pretty good, but the writing/editing indulges in way too many post-modernist devices: voice-over narration, breaking the 4th wall, flashbacks, cutaways, non-linear storytelling. Postmodernism in film is completely played out and I'm so **** tired of seeing filmmakers rely on it to make their storytelling seem more interesting than it really is.

Last complaint is that the people on the show are too pretty and glossy. They cast the hottest people alive which completely undermines any sense of realism. Teenagers are generally **** gross and Euphoria totally fails to capture that. You can contrast it with a show like Skins where several of the characters look awkward or disgusting.

The first season started out very strong, but it ended up leaving me with questions. The two specials were substanceless and made me weary for the second season. I still approached with excitement as the show is captivating and worth a watch. However, halfway through it loses the plot and becomes obvious if not boring. When watching tv shows I personally always think of rewatchability and with season 2's end, they make it clear none of the plot development will be rewarded and thus not worth revisiting. Expand

Season one held high highs and low lows with the majority of its positives coming in the way of acting and cinematography. Still, the first season left me with a feeling of dissatisfaction with the majority of the whole while still holding out hope that the true themes of the drug epidemic, teenage sexuality, and young adulthood would shine through in its second outing. Unfortunately Euphoria season 2 takes what the first season built and plunges into a horrific nose dive into what could very well be to the definition of "bad taste". This may be an intentional choice by the showrunners, but there hasn't been an episode where I felt like I was watching a show with a message. Most of it is simply unpleasant to bear witness to. While the cinematography and performances tend to shine the brightest, (particularly in Zendaya's Rue), the show caves in on itself due to the weight of its own lust for misery. Expand
