It's OK - I don't know how else to describe this standup. Ellen doesn't seem like she ever settles in to a groove and the jokes aren't all that great but at the same time the show is still watchable because Ellen is a master at relating to crowds. Too bad the jokes aren't consistently better.

I love Ellen, but this was soooo boring. I had like 3 laughs and I DON'T actually mean laughs but like "HA, THAT'S FUNNY!" And that is it... I like her talkshow better, she should stick to that.

Ellen is just as adorable as ever and this is overall a solid return to standup for her even if this isn't among her best material. The jokes are of a really cutesy variety that will bring a smile to your face. The mega-popular talk show host isn't afraid to get real here. She opens up about some personal tragedies and the struggle she faced after coming out. She opens up about some personal tragedies and the struggle she faced after coming out. This gives the special an uplifting and poignant nature stemming from Ellen's message of staying true to yourself, being kind, and never losing hope in your darkest hour. I just wish Relatable had been a bit better at holding my attention.

I was on my phone throughout almost the entire thing. Aside from the few times where I completely drifted out my ears were always focused on the TV, but I wasn't exactly rapt if you know what I mean. There are also moments where you can tell that she must have had some trouble coming up with enough material for a whole set. Like the "gag" that consists solely of her showing the kind of stuff she and her wife sent to each other on Instagram. It does eventually lead into her own joke, but still feels like a very obvious and rather desperate time filler.

Warts aside, Ellen's return to standup is a welcome one due to her always affable nature and moments of clever observational comedy. She may not actually be all that relatable anymore, but her story is no less compelling. Making the glimpses into the darker side of her rise to success the unexpected highlight of the special.

Her observations about flying, restaurants, etc. seemed very unoriginal. Talking about how coming out and being yourself is important may have been radical in the 90s but now it's almost painfully trite. The best comedians combine (more interesting) observations about life with political messages into longer bits. That said, I love Ellen and she's charming so it was worth watching just for an hour of Ellen time. Expand

"Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable" não é totalmente inteligente e interessante. As pequenas melhores partes são quando ela aborda os seus sentimentos e as suas responsabilidades enquanto apresentadora.

Quite funny but a bad case of humblebragging surely? "Past my People Awards..." What is her point exactly? No one has said she is rubbish so why show off. And why are those women whooping all the time every time she makes one of these self-glorifying remarks? It's yet another case of the Curse of the Netflix Special. Relatable fulfills a number of missions within its hour-plus running time. It is smart, genuinely funny and true to the comedian’s brand, and it reminds us that DeGeneres, the daytime figure synonymous with kindness and incredible gift-giveaways, also is entitled to her darkness.

As refreshing as it is to hear DeGeneres open up in a more nakedly honest way than we are used to seeing, she’s at her purest comedically in the special when she returns to the type of observational humor that made her famous in the first place.

Not all of Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable is that sharp, carefully crafted, or, frankly, as interesting [as her opening gambit]. As she moves into the middle of the hour, DeGeneres uses a few bits that feel directly imported from a monologue on Ellen. ... The sharpest, most deeply felt material comes when DeGeneres instead grapples with her feelings about her celebrity status, and the simultaneous gift and burden of her role as a daytime talk show host.
