It’s simply not as well written — the narrative is riddled with clichés, the plot is hampered by a sagging middle third, character motivations shift on a dime — and the two leads aren’t terribly compelling. But there’s something undeniably intoxicating about the show’s enthusiastic transnationalism. ... The whole thing is elevated by the show’s commitment to both the bit and the beauty of its subject matter. When delivered with the right amount of passion, a cliché transforms into a classic.

Tonally the series is elegant if a bit clenched at first, which mirrors Camille and Issei’s personalities. ... But in the final few scenes, a sense of release and euphoria washes over everything.

There isn’t a huge amount at stake emotionally. The leads, whose stories run in parallel before eventually interlocking, both have common-or-garden issues to resolve. They can’t commit to relationships, and wrestle with parental expectation. Not quite vin ordinaire, nor premier cru, it slips down oddly well.
