Jodie Whitaker is wonderfully funny and emotive. Yorkshire accents, like bow ties, are cool. The alien creature reminded me of a terminator / predator. It was fun to watch make her own Sonic Screwdriver. The companions provide a good dramatic compliment.

Don't be fooled, this is a good season. All of the 'complaints' here just remind me of the same fanboy meltdown as with The Last Jedi, the writers do something even slightly different than the boring formula and the entire fandom has a **** fit. Don't be fooled, this is not 'feminist propaganda' this is simply a lead that's female.

Ah, the beginning of a new saga: the first female Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and a new showrunner (Broadchurch's Chris Chibnall). I know a lot of fans HATE this season, but I enjoyed it.

What I like about this one is that it is the most grounded and focuses on the people again. It used to be that the show was partially about the new people the Doctor would meet along the way. But in later seasons, it became more about the concepts, and people became less important and more cannon fodder. Now, the show is back to being about the Doctor meeting new people and encouraging and experiencing the positivity of humanity even in the face of darkness. In fact, we get two historical episodes that are some of the most emotionally emotionally poignant ones they've ever done.

I'm loving Jodie Whittaker. She's sort of a combination of the entertaining Tenth and Eleventh Doctors and the more human fifth Doctor. Capaldi did a good job as the Doctor, but I was disappointed with how coldly pragmatic he could be at times. This Doctor returns to the good-natured altruism of earlier Doctors. Whittaker is charming and funny. She is also the biggest people-person of the recent Doctors. I'm actually glad that they cut down on the Doctor's ego and grandstanding.

Liking the new companions, who I think work well off of each other. Hands down the winner is Graham. It sure is a big change from tradition to go with an older companion, but his good-natured everyguyness works well as he gives some very good reactions to the craziness around him.

This season made the decision to be more accessible to new viewers by using totally new villains and monsters. Unfortunately, most of them don't really stand out. You also don't get any of those popular concept episodes that are known to appear once or twice per season. Basically, the emphasis on characters is to the detriment of other classic Doctor Who tropes. That having been said, I felt this was most consistent season in quality. There aren't any episodes that are too childish, trying too hard to be clever, or try to jam too many things into one episode.

One last issue, although death is well-known in Doctor Who, there are a couple killings in this that are a little too forced and feel cynically written.

Sadly, everything I loved about Dr Who died when Jodie Whittaker stepped into the Tardis. Shes a great actress and could have been top 3 Doctors, but the writing has let this character down.
Preachy, overly political, stealing from other sci fi (planet of the apes, Star Trek,), too many companions, trying too hard with 'quirks'.
Hope it improves, viewers are leaving in droves.

Demons of the Punjab and Rosa are some of the best episodes in years. Kerblam! is one of the worst.

Arachnids in the UK is loads of fun, but it's flawed. The Tsuranga Conundrum is also pretty good, too.

Sallie Aprahamian is the standout director for me. She got strong performances from everyone (particularly Whittaker) and her episodes were very interesting from a visual perspective. Jamie Childs got the most episodes, but really only directed Demons of the Punjab well. The rest weren't bad at all, but they weren't particularly great.

As a whole, it's a not good series, though. Very little character development and few standout episodes with the rest mediocre to bad.

Upon seeing the abysmally low audience score for DW S11, the temptation might be to disbelieve it - perhaps as proof of trolling, or of mass automated hacking. The problem with this theory is that the vast majority of reviews here are well-reasoned, and clearly very human. I would now like to add my own thoughts to the mix.

My wife and I are long-term Doctor Who fans. We have a massive Classic Who DVD collection, we've watched every New Who episode multiple times, we made two 'pilgrimages' to the DW experience in Cardiff - we even had a TARDIS at our wedding! And yet, Doctor Who Series 11 was a massive disappointment.

    The pro's:
[a] The main theme is very well done - with nods to the classic era, and a meaty dubsteo feel, it works very well. (Especially when the doctor smashed through the train in the first episode, and we got our first taste of it.)
[b] Bradley Walsh is very good - he should have either been cast as the doctor, or made the only companion.
[c] The cinematography is ok - not great, but decent.

... And that's it. I honestly can't think of a single other positive. The con's:
[A] Jodie Whitaker is horribly miscast. I'm not intrinsically opposed to the doctor being a woman, but the decision should have been narrativally justified, and not just thrust upon the audience. In any case, there are better female actors for the role - Olivia Coleman, for example. Jodie's performances are horrendously ill-judged, feeling like a pastiche of Matt Smith and David Tennant's wackier (and more irritating) moments. Her physicality is exaggerated, and her humour falls flat.
[B] There are simply too many companions, two of whom are utterly forgettable. Tosin Cole's acting is also dreadful at times.
[C] The TARDIS set is abysmal. Absolutely awful, the worst I've ever seen.
[D] The ambient music is repetitive and nowhere near epic enough. The sombre, more low-key feels works occasionally, but for the majority of the time it simply doesn't fit what we're watching.
[E] There is simply no connection to the show's 55 year history - almost no mythology, apart from cringeworthy 'banter-ish' moments in which Chibnall sought to imitate Moffat's throwaway lines about the Doctor's wacky anecdotes. It's as if he doesn't care about the history, and it shows.
[F] The choice of a female doctor was simply NOT well-established - it was not justififed in the context of the mythology, or in the context of the narrative. It comes off as cheap pointscoring, yet another victim of the political machinations of the BBC.
[G] The editing is often very poor, and the pacing is unbelievably dull. My wife and I were bored during many episodes. Whereas in previous seasons we would have arrived at the main thrust of any given story or action setpiece, in this season we spend ages being given unnecessary details, or being shown rather uninteresting locales.
[H] The aliens are unimaginative, and the enemies are not at all menacing. Most of the time, they're just straight white men. (A space racist? REALLY?!)

In short, this season is a failure. There are some bright moments, but they are few, and nowhere near bright enough. Doctor Who S11 was an experiment, and it has failed.

Series 11 started off the back of the lowest viewing figures since the show’s revival in 2005, an increasingly bored fanbase and a general feel of things being stale and in dire need of freshening up. There was a big task in front of Chris Chibnall to reinvigorate the fans, and to do so, changes needed to be made, and were.
It was always going to be extremely difficult to deliver amazing episodes that excite the audience whilst simultaneously implementing massive changes.
One of the changes, for me, that let the show down was that there was not enough of an underlying story threaded through the series. A storyline that keeps the fans guessing all the way through and ultimately gives them a reason to tune in again. In the past we’ve seen the Bad Wolf story that wasn’t fully revealed for a few series. Harold Saxon in series 3. Rose’s face popping up every now and again and an inevitable return in series 4, the doctor’s death in series 6 and the impossible girl in series 7. Ryan and Graham’s troubled relationship was the closest series 11 got to this, but it wasn’t strong enough to entice the fans. And at the end of the day it is tricky to implement this if there aren’t any characters from the past as there is simply nothing to base a story off, but it’s something I expect to have improved in the 2020 series.
Jodie Whittaker played the role very well, and I have no doubt is the right actor to take the doctor forward, but she’s got to have better writing and storylines to go off. There were some good episodes, I thought after the 1st 3 were that we were already onto something. But underwhelming episodes like Demons of the Punjab and It takes you away really (the latter of which was in my opinion one of the most mundane episodes of doctor who ever) let the series down in the end. 3 companions also certainly seemed a bit overkill in series 11, with Yaz not getting much development at all, but this isn’t something I’m too worried about, I think it’s a case of finding a balance, which will come with time.
I think whoever the actor of the doctor and the whoever the showrunner was series 11 was always going to be one of transition and change. That does mean however we need to see things start to come together more in series 12. Fans can tolerate the odd sticky patch here and there but if it’s prolonged there will be more and more of a task to win them back as the show goes on. I don’t expect series 12 to go down as one of the greatest series of the show ever, but I do expect the showrunner to have reacted to the criticism of series 11 and that should make for an improved series 12.

The only things I weren’t so keen on (the “imperfections”) were that some of the other performances throughout the season were a bit hit & miss on occasions and the same with the some of stories which also at times especially in episodes like ‘Rosa’ & ‘Demons Of The Punjab’ did get a little bit too taboo for my liking, I totally get why they did it and I’m not in anyway against it, I just feel like it all could’ve done with being a bit less on the nose. I also felt a teeny bit deflated by the fact that there was no real proper story arc like Russel T Davies & Steven Moffat did in previous seasons but if in future ones there are I’ll happily forgive that. What a disgrace. This happens when you sacrifice good writing for toxic feminism and identity politics, just as an arbitrary tool without making any sense in the context of the universe others have built. Just draw the men as weak and whimsy, the women strong, powerful and superior, so you can expect the appropriate "professional reviews". Good writing doesn't matter.

Too woke, and force feeds a devices narrative that is not Doctor WHO. After watching the first 4 episodes i could not handle the unapologetic disregard for what this show truly stands for, and the narrow minded writing that cripples who we really are as a society with the unadulterated virtue signaling theme.

So far this has been AWFUL. I could hardly watch episode 2, I found my phone more interesting. The worst part is the music, it just gives it no positive vibe at all. it feels horrible. the writing and direction are really bad too. This is not doctor who.

All in all, “The Woman Who Fell To Earth” succeeds as a statement of intent for this brand new era of Doctor Who, telling us that it’s going to be easily accessible, gorgeous to look at and listen to, all about the character drama and brought to life with a lead actress who has a lot of energy. In terms of comparing it to past Who, it’s not a flawless season opener, but it does a terrific job of making us excited for the rest of Doctor No. 13’s tenure.

Goofy and curious, commanding and contemplative, Thirteen is already well on her way to demonstrating the complex emotional makeup that is the Doctor. She also demonstrates a cheerful, can-do spirit. ... With the exception of Tim Shaw’s unappealing self, very little about the episode feels Whovian. Gone is former showrunner Steven Moffat’s sense of play, both in the verbal sparring and convoluted storytelling.

The premiere episode here, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” reminded me, more than anything, of “The X-Files,” when it was really good. It takes you back to the days when Doctor Who was a fun sci-fi procedural. ... [The alien] resembles some gleaming villain out of a Marvel movie, which makes his blokey name, Tim Shaw, even more incongruously funny. This is Doctor Who at its best--nerdy and chilling and quick with a joke. And, most significantly of all, generous of spirit, a quality that simply shimmers off Whittaker.
