This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a mixed bag until the finale, which turned out to be Game Of Thrones season 8 level bad. Some good, some bad, and then pure turn-off-the-TV trash. Basically, Dexter had to act out of character in order to be caught. Very similar to Game of Thrones, where characters had to behave unlike themselves in order to suit the ending. If you have to change the characters to suit your ending, maybe your ending needs changing.

Dexter was sloppy throughout the season, going after criminals that he knew were being targeted by cops, at the places the cops would surely show up. Yes he had been latent for many years, but being rusty doesn't mean you become stupid.

The Harrison relationship was frustrating and went nowhere, then rapidly went somewhere, and then nowhere again. Briefly I thought it may actually be very interesting, if Harrison was actually hunting Dexter, suspecting him of being the Bay Harbor Butcher and killing his mom. But no, they didn't delve into anything that interesting.

In order to suit the ending, Dexter had to become completely bonkers at the end, needlessly killing a cop to needlessly escape from prison from a charge that never would have stuck. And somehow we are to believe that his son killing him will somehow be healing, that he'll live happily ever after. That it won't completely destroy him and make him worse than Dexter. I had to fast forward to the credits from there, it was just too dumb to watch at that point.

I thought politics would get in the way of competent writing as it so often does these days, and it seems as though it was indirectly linked to its downfall.

After seeing the diversity checklist in the first episode (gay couple, amputee, indigenous female chief, competent black officer, moronic white male officer, climate change, anti-billionaire/capitalism), I figured it was just the virtue signalling that every terrible writer nowadays likes to throw in for pandering, and that it would all be overcome by a decent series. I truly hoped that it would not get worse, but I cannot help but think that it is the reason why the writing went the way it did.

The characters are awful, and the actors are all pretty disappointing. Angela, has almost no flaws outside of being a mediocre adoptive mother, Audrey and Harrison are stereotypical angsty teens with limited emotional range, Logan, again is flawless, Mr. Krabs (Kurt Caldwell) is very dull and wooden, and Molly Park is just incredibly annoying and sums up every leftist influencer stereotype you can think of. None of these characters are particularly interesting, which is why it is sad to see them get more screen time than Dexter does.

The subplot for Audrey and Harrison (melodramatic school issues) is entirely useless, it does not do anything for the actual plot, so why is it even included? Angela’s history again, is entirely irrelevant, it connects for one episode and doesn’t really mean much because you can predict what happens ahead of time. As for Kurt, not too interesting as an antagonist I must say, he’s no Ice Truck Killer, or Trinity, he’s just a generic bad guy to oppose Dexter. None of these subplots add anything to the show and they are the reason for the boredom of filler in the middle episodes.

In the original series, almost every episode (if not advancing the main plot) was either a different potential target for Dexter which usually had a good backstory, or was about the personal/professional lives of the surrounding characters that linked back to the main plot. In New Blood, none of the side stories have anything to do with the plot or have any meaningful exposition to enrich the characters, it just felt like filler. Now, the reason I mention that politics would potentially ruin the show is because of how the story would have to be manipulated to cast certain characters in a better light. Starting off, every evil or incompetent character in this show is a white male, not surprising for this day and age, but it makes things more predictable. Angela, who they remind you is of indigenous descent and a single-mother, is absolutely impeccable, she was able to piece together so many vague clues with zero context to put together the whole picture of Dexter’s past, partly because he has suddenly become incompetent in his “trade” he has applied for decades, and made several mistakes, which is way off character, and I honestly think partly because she is a token female minority character in a day and age where they are the best at everything. You can hate my politics all you want, but it just seems really convenient that all of this evidence, including Molly’s monologues on the BHB, seem to get pieced together so easily. Especially when Dexter is so good at covering his tracks and having the foresight to prevent these types of issues, and so Dexter had to be toned down. The problem with that is you have to literally emasculate and dumb-down the beloved title character to make all of this seem possible and plausible. The Dexter in this show, is not the same Dexter from the original series. This version is boring, weak, and watered down. The version everybody wanted to see was the cold, calculated, dark-humored, intellectual sociopath of old. It made sense that he was “dull” in the first episode, but this a guy who has fooled family, friends, colleagues, and specialized investigators for well over 2 decades, and has fooled this current group for over 2 years. It’s just a shame what they did to him, and how this whole plot played out.

+ Wanted to put Michael C Hall here, but even he doesn’t look like he is enjoying this

- Terrible writing
- Terrible acting
- Terrible casting
- Terrible ending
- Boring antagonist
- Annoying characters
- Horrendously slow pacing
- Ruined Dexter as a character
- Incredibly predictable
- Too many inconsistencies
- Harrison’s entire arc is truly irrelevant

My score is a zero, they ruined Dexter, end of story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Know Your Enemy.

Harrison, slowly lowering rifle, says, "I've thought of you my whole life, grieved for you, searched for you, & since I've found you, I feel I could love you Dad, but I don't want to be you. Go."

That's how it should have been written. That's true love. Forgiveness & compassion.

They utterly missed what could have been THE Dexter moment.

Instead, they write that trite holier than thou sludge & hand us yet another absolute trash ending.

It's amazingly unspeakable just how one (Clyde Phillips/showrunner) can know, write & present an amazing character & product for 4 seasons, yet at the end (twice now & throughout the new season), completely unhinge & totally destroy everything that was previously built. It's sacrilege.

Just like baseball teams, Clyde Phillips needs a "closer" because clearly he cannot pitch a full game. (unlike King Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul - THE best shows of their genre) Storyboard anyone, anyone?

From the beginning of this season, I've felt a lurking sense of impending disappointment. I've overlooked the strong female characters, the obnoxious teens, the brainless police, the unbelievable human reactions. But episode 5 is so lazy, so contrived, so filled with impossible coincidences, and silliness, that I don't know if I can watch anymore. This isn't Dexter. No matter how dark things got, the original Dexter was always fun. Things moved quickly. Any cheating with the plot was earned. If I have to pinpoint the problem with this season, it's the over-emphasis of Harrison. There's just too much time spent on him. I don't think it was a bad idea to have him appear in Dexter's life, but it would've been so much better if he had remained a bit of a mystery, if we didn't see too much of him. But we see way too much of him feeling sorry for himself, emoting, and just being boring. It drags down the pace and leaves us with little hope that he can surprise us in the end. Making him a mystery would've been so much better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To begin with, the series has absolutely nothing to do with the previous eight seasons.

You will find practically nothing here that would connect the original painting with a modern miserable likeness.

From the very start, the series is filled with cardboard characters in the form of a black cop!, a mestizo sheriff!, a disabled person! and Asian reporters. Seeing these characters in the first episodes, I guessed the ending of the series correctly. It would be foolish to expect anything else from American tolerance. Dexter's character is more than completely changed, from a cold, unfeeling predator, he turned into a cozy homebody living in a nice little town. Fantasy! A man who had no feelings for all 8 seasons was changed beyond recognition by the script. We are shown a cardboard studio city filled with the same characters without backstories, without any purpose and interaction with the plot. They are all lifeless, speaking in short phrases and silly jokes. Everything about the show is rigged to take the story to its ridiculous ending, there are no plot twists we're used to seeing in the original 'Dexter', we don't see Hall constantly slipping over the edge. He does not make incredible decisions, his eyes do not shine as before. From a crouching tiger, he was turned into an old sick dog who lost his grip. This series has nothing to do with the previous one. Here everything is set up so that the viewer would condemn him for his dark past, stop seeing him as a fighter against evil, Batman, an arbiter of justice, and see only an old maniac. The Dark Passenger, Harry, the codex, Debb, all of the character's main features, weaknesses and internal dialogues are simply deleted from the series. This series was created for the sake of tolerant by American standards, the completion of a huge seven-year work on the coolest movie maniac. In other words, this is Dexter in a modern way, on a modern agenda. The viewer is not offered to make a choice, he is forced to kneel and kiss the boot.

It is very difficult for me to sum up what I have seen. After repeatedly watching the previous 8 seasons and reading all the books in the series, I am convinced that the series ended on the last episode of season 8 many years ago. Rest in peace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

As someone who was a fan of pretty much all of the original series of Dexter (The only ones I truly disliked were seasons 6 and 8) Dexter New Blood is a ridiculous, conceited, politicized rehash of the first few seasons of Dexter. The Harrison storyline is not even original because they already used it with the trinity killers son Jonah coming back. Clyde Phillips gets far more credit than he deserves. I gave this show a chance and watched the first few episodes, but every other line of dialogue was filled with cringe inducing leftist lectures that were extremely out of place. I may have enjoyed this show despite that if the storyline was interesting but it most certainly is not. Dexter’s motivation for the first murder was also absurd, he did not find proof or evidence he just based it in on one line of dialogue that he learned while visiting the police station. Dexter also has no chemistry with his love interest like he did with Rita. This show is absolute garbage, as I said before just watch Twin Peaks instead. Expand

This season had some undoubtedly fantastic and 'classic' feeling Dexter moments, however the way they end this series is almost more of an insult than the ending they were attempting to reprimand. Unless they release an 'alternate' ending that actually utilizes the many highly interesting plot threads they spent all season creating and building up to, then this is sadly an almost pointless addition to the series. With that being said, if you're okay with having an unsatisfying ending and just want more Dexter moments, this will absolutely give you that, I remember being THRILLED after the first episode thinking "oh sh%t, this show is really back in full swing!" And they do manage to maintain and build upon that momentum, all up until the second half of the last episode, where everything that had been laid out was essentially shot in the foot. The only thing I hated was the ending, which was **** Dexter was killed by Harrison. I wanted a happy ending for Dexter. I feel like he died for nothing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So far, I'm into it. The viewer reviews on here are a bit ridiculous in terms of Dexter being "too diverse" .. Too diverse would mean the diversity is overbearing and becomes too much of a focal point to the narrative. Thats not the case here. In Dexter, much like reality.. Gay people can run businesses. Women can be successful in their careers. Handicap people live normal lives and people of color can in fact be good upstanding citizens. My beefs are these. I for one loved how Dexter ended all those years ago. Dexter sailed into the storm, giving into who he really is at his core and abandoning everything he built to be himself. Poetic. So far in the new series, it's a slow burn. We see Harrison return and he's a super boring character with little to no dimension. The antagonist has yet to be determined but it seems that it'll be an old rich guy so that would be a bit contrived (unless the writers throw us a curveball). Dexter himself has become yet again domesticated and it feels stale. thankfully, we see Dexter return to form but that happens rather quickly, not leaving the viewer really wanting more. If this was any show but Dexter, I'd likely have lost interest but I'm excited to see what's in store. I wish there was more than 2 episodes to watch but that's where we're at. Worth checking out so far if you're excited to see Michael C Hall return as America's favorite serial killer. Don't listen to the people crying about diversity, it really isn't that bad. Expand

The only problem is that to kill a beloved character like Dexter, needs more time than only one episode, they maked the things really fast, i think that they needed more to make the end better, but without all the problems with the last episode, now we can say goodbye to Dexter, the best serial killer of fiction. *SPOILERS*

I can only talk for myself of course, but I thoroughly enjoyed this Dexter revival/miniseries. It's nothing as good as the phenomenal season four and probably is a tad short when compared to the seasons that precede the aforementioned, but it's without doubt much better than anything that followed The Trinity Killer.

It's an absolute joy to see Michael C. Hall back as Dexter, it's testament to his acting and the character that you genuinely love to watch him. Jennifer Carpenter's return as Debra is also terrific, as is the late reappearance of the awesome Batista (David Zayas) but also the newcomers to the series are enjoyable too. I got attached to the community of characters pretty much instantly, with the standouts being Jack Alcott, Julia Jones and Clancy Brown. I'd be up for seeing more, honestly.

I found the story to be rather engrossing, it got me tense and uncomfortable a fair few times. I see some say it's rushed, I won't quite say that but the last few episodes do feel a bit sped up - but I gained much entertainment from it and feel happy about the ending, which is much more satisfying than the original conclusion that we got. I see IMDb reviewers have the final episode as the serie's lowest ever, which is absolute rubbish in my opinion - borderline insulting, in fact.

I read there are rumours of a continuation of some sort. I'd be up for one no doubt, but I'd be pleased if it ended here too.

After a mediocre series finale, the show needed a dignifying swan song. And they did it. The result is a functional endeavor featuring the best of what made the original great.
Michael C. Hall didn’t skip a beat. It’s as if he channeled his inner dexter morgan for years after the original run was over. Right away, in the first episode, it becomes apparent the actor was born to do it. Strikingly familiar in tone and modes, he embraces the character with sufficient harmony to grant us the pleasure of reliving it. More than a nostalgia act, this is a serious embrace of a long-terminated franchise, and it can even be consumed by someone oblivious to the past.

From that point on it had its ups (Julia Stiles giving a great performance in season 5) and sadly, many downs (season 6’s abysmal and infuriating Deb’s-In-Love-With-Dexter epiphany), and, most especially, the terrible final season, and it’s insulting series finale. “Dexter: New Blood” wasn’t perfect, with too many “Seriously?" moments than I would have liked, but, like the original's final few seasons, the acting always elevated when the material faltered (even with that Deb-Loves-Dexter fiasco), and the performances here were excellent, most notably the great Jennifer Carpenter, as Dexter's dead sister Deb (taking over for their father as Dexter’s subconscious), the always reliable Clancy Brown, as the “unofficial mayor" of Iron Lake with secrets of his own, Julia Jones, as Dexter's police chief girlfriend, and Jack Alcott (most recently in The Good Lord Bird) as Dexter's now-teenage son. (And just when you think you know where THAT’S going, thankfully, it does not. Well, entirely anyway.)

The last two episodes of this were riveting, if predictable, and we finally were gifted with a series finale we deserved almost a decade ago. (But what we do NOT need, now or ever, is "Dexter: New Blood" season 2. Yeah, I know. Like that’s not gonna happen.)

Compare to last season final, this is a real nice ending for the character/plot that is dexter. Great cast, the image reflect beautifully colder environnement and nice scenario.
Definetly not perfect, but a good season we deserved in my opinion.

I'm hooked again, why on earth have they waited this long to continue? With the quality of the other shows these days, I'm willing to overlook the inconsistencies.

Considering how much of a needed fix this was for the disappointing season 8 of Dexter I got exactly what I wanted. A perfect finale for America’s favorite serial killer. It also leaves me wanting for more. A lot more.

New Blood is great in a lot of ways and not so great in others. One of the great parts of New Blood is Michael C Hall. Not only is he fantastic, but he slides back into this role without any hiccups. It's nice to see what Dex has been doing with himself since we last saw him. He has a wonderful girlfriend, he has friends, and he has a good life in Iron Lake without killing. But it's not the Dexter we know and love. At least until the end of the first episode. Also, why didn't Yvonne Strahovski at least come back for a small cameo? I hate when characters are written out with just a mention. The arrival of someone from Dexter's past is nice, but after 7 episodes, he's more of a pain than a good addition. Jennifer Carpenter as Deb is great as always. He foul-mouthed honesty is what Dexter needs at times, but sometimes she gets a little too intense. The plot of New Blood follows the typical Dexter formula of Dex trying to balance life and his Dark Passenger with an underlying plot of a "big bad." Overall I am enjoying New Blood. It's not the same, but it shouldn't be. Dexter is older and a lot has happened in 10 years. I hope the next three episodes really end the miniseries in a better way than season 8 did. Expand

Dexter: New Blood. SURPRISE MOTHER F#CKER!

New Blood brings back Michael C. Hall to play the witty Dexter Morgan now known in the small town of Iron Lake as Jim Lindsay. Do yourself a favor and watch the show, you'll love it. I love it.

With Clyde Phillips back at the helm, this revival for Dexter is well-paced and lean with none of that fat that weighed the original series down. Feels more like the old Dexter with every episode and every episode feels better than the last. I think the story is setting up really well. The ending should be really good this time around.

Disappointing and bland Sequel to a Masterpiece. Cant emphasize enough how poorly this is written… the forced „woke“ Elements are the Cherry on top of your brown Cake.

But if you consider the series as a whole, then this is an extra season. Season 8 ended with dignity. As for Dexter: New Blood itself, there is no good and intelligible antagonist, there is no interesting story. If you're a big fan of the original series, it hurts you to watch it Expand

Absolutely terrible writing... As with every show nowadays, they have to make the white male character an idiot or a villain. They completely destroy the character of Dexter from start to finish and everything in between is utterly boring.
