Coulam provides a satisfying ending that doesn’t suggest another season, content to close this story through final (perhaps slightly rushed) revelations tinged with hope. For fans of crime dramas, that is exactly what we come for.

Taut four-part mystery. ... David Tennant is compellingly inscrutable as the town's affable doctor. [30 Mar - 12 Apr 2020, p.9]

In summary it sounds soapy, but in reality it is ruthlessly unsensationalist and at times deeply moving.

It is fictional, but conveyed with such intensity that it seems more vivid than the real life murders depicted in the week. These are the strange convolutions of watching crime on TV. Deadwater Fell is gruelling, but it’s hard to take your eyes off it.

The performances are on-point across the board.

With that dark material, Deadwater Fell is far from escapist viewing, and even if the series doesn't treat the demise of several children in ultra-graphic terms, it can be hard to watch. I also wouldn't have minded one or two more unpredictable beats at the end, which is a bit too rushed and predictable. Deadwater Fell still offers sufficient distraction and enough nuance to make it worth checking out.

By the end, I felt manipulated more than intrigued, and left with a hollow feeling only slightly alleviated by watching a great actor do his best to hold a show together as it got less and less interesting.
