The critics are tripping hardcore on this. This is easily one of the most criminally UNDERrated shows on Netflix and this is strange for me to say since the service is mostly filled with poop that you're meant to ignore. It's basically a Lindelof script (like LOST) except there are actual definitive answers fed to you at regular intervals. Dark is the definition of being underrated, the show deserves way more mainstream success and attention. Very cerebral show actually makes you stop, rewind, think, and rewatch. A technical masterclass. Superbly acted and written, but amazingly planned and plotted to the smallest detail from season 1 episode to the season 3 finale. A top 5 all time show, and possibly the greatest science fiction ever seen on TV.

For me, Dark caused three distinct reactions: (1) "Oh! Awesome!". This is a show about major plot twists and each episode spins you around. It is based on time travel and it is extremely well done, and the actors are SUPERBLY chosen. Each episode brings more story, more connections. The writers of Dark are pretty good. (2) "Damn, I am starting to feel at home". The environment and directing are on point. The visuals, the angles all play in favor of the story delivering. With time, everything is familiar to you and begin to be part of this world. (3) "Damn, these people have no facial expression" and "I might sleep now". The pacing is weird. In the first two episodes, I literally slept 4 times before finishing them. But this only happens in the first episodes, after that is awesome. However, one thing that will not change is: Their expression is almost the same in the entire series. Although this is not a big deal, it is a major contrast to Hollywood-based series and movies. Sometimes it is kind of annoying that you see people in fantastic situations or in unbearable stress just looking like this => o.o or like this => ._. Overall, you will get used to it. I was reluctant to watch Dark but I am glad I did because it is pretty good.… Expand

The plot moves at lightspeed and the story lines are a labyrinth that deserve multiple viewings. It's fantastical, far beyond the simple "whodunnit" I expected when I caught the 'missing child' synopsis.

Myth, magic, religion, time travel and the laws of physics dance about one another. The backdrop of gorgeous German countryside, the dramatic attention to lighting (not always subtle but hey, it's fun!) and the tinkling musical score heighten the popcorn-munching suspense. While Dark may not be the most cerebral, it does require attention and thought.

I've been consistently impressed by the quality of the acting, especially by the younger performers. As has been mentioned, some of the casting between generations is uncanny. Many reviews I have read, both professional and amateur, compare the show to Stranger Things or even The OA. Honestly, I find the comparisons derivative to all three shows. Every cinematic exploration of space travel isn't Star Trek, every zombie drama isn't The Walking Dead. Dark is worth watching for its own merits. I gave it a perfect score based on my own enjoyment of the show, not necessarily upon its cinematic merits. Still, if you're up more some atmospheric, seat grabbing drama, set some time aside for this show.… Expand

I didn't know what to expect from DARK. But once I got a couple of episodes into the first season. I was hooked. This series has not left my mind in weeks. I can't stop thinking about it.

The creators of this show obviously planned out each season way before this show was even pitched. The details are everywhere, even in the tiniest of places you'd never expect when watching for the first time, but after finishing the series and rewatching earlier episodes, I realised just how incredibly written and produced this show is.

The acting is superb. The casting is outstanding. The score is brilliant and enticing. The cinematography is visually pleasing and at times, breathtaking. The characters are entertaining and realistic, even when the show pushes the boundaries on realism. Sure, the third season could've fleshed some characters' journeys a little more, but in end when looking at this show as a whole, you know you've just witnessed something incredible.

Ignore the comments comparing DARK to Stranger Things, ST is a colourful, oversaturated kids show compared to this.

DARK is an incredibly unique piece of art, it has absolutely spoiled all other shows for me. No other show or movie will compare. It's a love letter to the Sci-Fi and Mystery genre. A true gem that shines out of the current landscape of modern television.

(As a Brit, I also highly recommend watching it with English subtitles and with the original German dub, believe me the English dub is awful and the German actors are incredible with their line deliveries).… Expand

Dark is a heavily plot driven show that doesn't get rolling until near the end of the 1st season. There are so many characters that it takes most of the first season just to get the basics about the important characters down. The show dangles a pretty meh attempt at a murder thriller, and fills in the boring gaps with haunting cinematography and music, just so it's not an unwatchable snooze fest during the slow start. Unfortunately, during that first season it came close many times to just completely boring me out of my mind, but I'm glad I stuck through with it.

By the end of the first season, the rules of the world become kind of clear and the story goes totally bonkers in the best way possible. Literal dimensions are added on top of the bleh murder mystery and it becomes a serious trip. The characters never get super interesting though, and it's hard to care too much about them; but that's clearly not the point of the show. Pure curiosity about how this insane web shapes up is what drives interest.… Expand

Space-time does not divide us, but unites us. We are aggregations of experiences, there is no pain, guilt, resentment, anger or hatred when there is an understanding that everything is connected. I had seen this show pop up in my list from time to time the past couple of years, and when I was between shows a month ago I looked at it a little more closely and decided to give it a try. Viewing it in the native German with EnglishI had seen this show pop up in my list from time to time the past couple of years, and when I was between shows a month ago I looked at it a little more closely and decided to give it a try. Viewing it in the native German with English subtitles (which I strongly recommend), I was captivated by a story that lifted this show up into the stratosphere of Breaking Bad, The Americans, The Expanse, and only a handful of other series I have ever watched. Dark expertly examines not simply time travel but the whole nature of spacetime and quantum mechanics that I have read about in books. Does free will exist, or is it just a myth as we plod along the same path to our ultimate fate no matter what we try and do to change it? This is the question Dark explores. It then weaves these theories into the lives of four families across multiple generations and even alternate realities, and just when you think this show has bit off more than it can chew and is heading down the road traveled by "Lost", it perfectly connects all the dots and explains all. But even that alone isn't what propels Dark into "Greatest Ever" territory, it is the unbelievable heart it displays as it explores all of these characters through different points in their lives, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, their flaws and imperfections, their motivations and desires. You care about these people and what happens to them. You root not only for their happiness, but their very existence. I don't give 10/10 lightly, but Dark is just that, certainly one of the greatest series I have ever watched, and possibly the best.… Expand

It is downright confusing, slow burning and tricky for the most part but is transformed into an amazing piece of story telling through excellent character writing, perfect casting and believable performances. There is never a time when a character decision or character action would be doubted or confusing to you no matter how negative or positive.
All of which add up to a thoroughly satisfying and complete watch.

It is surprising how this was touted as another 'Stranger Things' type show when it first released, yet 3 seasons later in comparison to 'ST/S03' Dark delivers so much more along with being a completed story instead of dragging on until the story and characters go into trash territory.… Expand

From the first frame to its last, Dark entices you in with its premise and demands your full attention. It is exceedingly rare to find few flaws in a long form experience such as a TV show, yet Dark achieves this feat. Acting, directing, narrative pacing, visual effects, music, it is all here and it all fits flawlessly. To say that creators Baran bo Odar and Jante Friese have garnered a fan in me is an understatement. I have to substract a point as I found some special effects not as realistic as I wished they would have been (e.g. expanding of a black hole being a hallow dome instead of an actual hole.)

Great ending as well, as everything finally makes sense.… Expand

Martin A. - The most realistic time travel. Dark is a work of art on screen. Like all works of art it starts off with colors and strokes and the whole picture isn't clear until the end. What I hated. It expects your attention and demands it in spades. This isn't a bad thing but in one blink or you'll miss it, and since the whole show is in German a viewer can miss a whole lot in one sentence. Some times the show does not even need dialog. They expect you to understand who someone is or long still shots of buildings without saying a single word.

What I love. I've learned to love all the characters in this story. Ulrich, one person I hated in the show, started to grow on me later on, especially impressive since I also hated the younger version of him as well.

The less you know going into this story the better. Jonas and Martha are best couple! An amazing time traveling epic journey! This is a must own. 9.8 out of 10.… Expand

Dark is easily the best show that I have ever seen. It is truly a masterpiece. The acting, score and cinematography are all great. I'm a huge Sci-fi fan, but generally don't love time travel stories.
