Disclaimer: I´m german, and i think german made entertainment is largely horrible. I´m of the opinion it´s probably since Fritz Lang that we made anything decent.

I had high hopes for DARK, seeing it compared to the likes of the excellent show Stranger Things. Sadly, DARK has not been able to change my impression of german made entertainment. My review can´t cover the entire season.

Sadly, DARK has not been able to change my impression of german made entertainment.
My review can´t cover the entire season. for i could not bear watching after two episodes.

This show basically lacks everything that made Stranger Things so great.
Stranger Things makes you feel for it´s characters, because they are likeable and funny.
In contrast, DARK may be home to the most unlikeable cast of characters ever to appear on TV.
90 minutes in, i just hoped the power plant would suffer a SUPER-GAU and take this town out.
That´s by far not the only issue though. The sound design is probably the worst part of the show.
The constant, overly loud, sound effects are annoying above all else. They are clearly meant to enhance the mood, but end up being just ridiculous since they are comically overused.
I could go on, but sadly it´s not worth it.
4/10 for trying and having professional production value.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A show for the US crowd who got intrigued by germany through Berlin Station and other series and want to immerse themselves in a haunted-horror-style cross-breed of Stranger Things and "Tatort". The flickering lights, the down-under being the past, the power plant being Hawkins Lab, the rag-tag group of youngsters and misfits advanced into teenager age but essentially presenting a very similar dynamic with underdogs and misfits finding together... the brainchild of market research departments at Netflix that figured out people would like to cross serial-killer-thrillers with the mystic... not that original imho Expand

Very interesting buildup and intense themes. It surely deserves more than what the critics have given this show as a score. But the show came to somewhat tepid, weak conclusion. The last two, three episodes might be underwhelming to the viewers who followed the buildup for something substantial. I would recommend this show as a time-killer but it is not the top-notch material.

Jonas’s search for answers offers the pleasures of puzzle-solving, if not profound drama, and if you give Dark a few episodes you may find yourself hooked.

A consistently engaging genre effort in its own right, employing unsettling production values and an enormous cast of well-drawn characters for a narratively splintered investigation into questions of fate and free will. ... Come for the surface similarities to Stranger Things, stay for the unique time-travel insanity.

It’s beautiful, mysterious, and a little bit maddening, and you’d want to take in every little second of the show even if it wasn’t in German with English subtitles, because every aspect of it matters.
