This is a great new sci-fi series. I've just watched the season finale and can not wait for season 2 to come to see how the story continues with that cliffhanger. The fx are actually pretty good considering this is for tv, the action scenes even better, I personally had no problem with the acting. To be honest I thought the casting was pretty spot on, for the main cast and the people they go up against during the season.

The biggest positive for Dark Matter is the writing though. You want to get to know who the characters are, as they themselves are trying to do the same after losing their memory. The 'mystery' of who they are, what actually happened to them, and who the possible traitor might be had me hooked throughout the 13 episodes. I was actually hoping that none of them were the traitor, because I was starting to like this group of characters....

If you like sci-fi, this series is definitely worth a try. As it's actually pretty darn good, far better than the average score the 'critics' are trying to make it appear. After watching the full season, I'm left wondering if they actually watched the same series I did.

What a brilliant , intelligent sci fi series. Don't listen to the bad reviews, these are people who lack the intelligence to appreciate good sci fi, and probably should be watching Bay Watch reruns or Charlies Angels or whatever. Anyway, this series was such a pleasant surprise, brilliant acting, very good casting, and great suspenseful plot and storyline. Do yourself a favour and watch this.

Thank God they renewed it and didn't leave us permanently hanging. More character action space opera than sci-fi, but enough sci-fi delivered every now and then to be interesting. It's possible I am too blinded by the glory of Two to be objective, but in that case the show still delivers.

Dark Matter something of wonderful narrative and intense Sci-Fi battling is what creates a thrilling TV show, over the 3 seasons it had it was more engaging to watch and the inclusion of new plots and stories with each passing episode makes it all the more entertaining, It just a shame we may never see any more of it, why Syfy why.

Very good show even with a low budget, the cast is right , the history and pace is good , good performances i hope to see a season 2 with more revelations about the characters and more battles and better cgi but for its 1st season they have done really well.

Apparently, that's the first impression that the creators of this show wants to feed its soon-to-be loyal fanbase. As the mysteries unfold, we are given generous servings of atypical dialogue and convincing decision processes that real humans would make. The evolution of the characters start from 1-dimensional clichés into multi-layered, multi-dimensional sci-fi goodness that is rarely seen on TV. I enjoy liking and disliking the characters and the acting and directing that goes into building the complex personalities of each person, including the "non-humans".

I totally enjoyed the different references from different cultural artifacts like Charlotte's Web, Star Wars, and EVE Online. I'm pretty sure there are other easter eggs I have missed, but the fun part is figuring them out as we go along for the FTL ride. I also commend the writers for the balance of explaining stuff vs. allowing the audience to figure things out for themselves.

Most of all, I enjoy getting answers to the most obvious questions that arise each episode. We also get more questions, but to be able to scratch the mystery itch is extremely satisfying.

First episode review MY VOTE 8.5/9 out of 10

Right so this is my first ever review and i'm writing this as it justly deserves it based on the first episode and the first episode only, to start off with this series has been overly /harshly criticised mostly for having cliche type casts and the lack of possible character development and plot. I'll start off with the these "cliche" characters which i found to be of no concern at all unless you're an over opinionated **** who has to poke holes in anything that isn't as good as firefly.

    The characters
Right so you have the Asian guy with the sword who doesn't talk much (RACISM EVERYONE!!!) you have your token black guy because of course if there is only one hes gotta be token (MOAR RACISM EVERYONE!!!) you have the lovable gun mad **** the pretty plain good guy main character, feisty hot badass boss lady and the cool mysterious weird chick. so that's all the characters and sure some of them can be compared to firefly as well as many other series, but seriously guys when was the last **** time you watched a TV series with 100% original characters THAT'S RIGHT **** never, because in this day and age every character type has pretty much been done already so you could call any type of character in any TV/Movie a cliche. Dark matter gives you fairly diverse characters that are in no way boring sure they aint 100% original but they are well acted, funny and interact well with each other AND THAT'S WHAT MATTERS PEOPLE.

    The plot
the plot i would say is definitely the most unique and cool thing about this show because it has the ability to go anywhere it wants, it pulls you in straight away with mystery and then just piles up mystery after mystery and if you don't like your mysteries then you probably don't like SciFi so Gtfo yo. Six people wake up on a ship without knowing anything about who or where they are 15minutes before life support goes down and they all choke and die, now maybe i haven't watched as much TV as some people but i'm pretty sure this hasn't been done yet, as for the plot not leading anywhere its episode 1 give it a damn chance guys you didn't give firefly a chance back in 2002 and look how that **** turned out you destroyed a **** masterpiece with your criticism, but yeah firefly aside like i said with a plot such as this it has the ability to go anywhere it wants.

    The verdict
I would rate this a show a solid 8.5 maybe a 9/10 but I'll decide on that after i watch a few more episodes, either way guys don't let all the criticism stop you trying out the show as it almost made me,
i went into the first episode thinking it would be awful and i was blown away at how wrong all the criticism is.

Funny scenes get mixed in with more intense, "yo, look out..." scenes. Similar to Stargate Universe/Stargate, battlestar galactica reboot, firefly and star wars. No aliens, just us folk battling each other out there in space. Cheers.

This is one of the better scifi shows to come along in a while. It pays tribute to just about everything out there scifi. There was even an episode that paid homage to Event Horizon.

It's good to see SyFy coming out with a decent show since their latest efforts (Sharknado?) have been laughable.

By episode 5, I have to say that this is by FAR the best show on television. It is PHENOMENAL. It is everything you loved about Mass Effect and a bold new future for science fiction--one that reduces some of the pain from losing Firefly (though it's not as frequently funny and it's way more dramatic, you can see the parallels.)

The acting, direction, environments, and plots are all fresh. The music is very Mass Effect-like. The initial cliches of the pilot, obliterated by the twist and its following episodes, become a mysterious and fascinating backdrop which allows us to get to know the characters and their universe as they get to know themselves. This show likes to take your expectations, present them to you, and blithely proceed to beat them to a pulp.

Melissa O'Neil is AMAZING. She portrays the kind of character one either wants to be or to be with. She is the glue that holds together a brilliant cast which has amazing chemistry, one where every character is important, distinct, and interesting, even the one who seems like an Expy of Jayne (Three). Each has their secrets, their flaws, and their mysteries. Each is sympathetic enough to make you curious about their past, their hidden sides, and their fate. You wonder, who is the traitor and why? The questions are pervasive and increasingly fascinating as enough hints are dropped to keep theories branching out in your brain. It's a lazy interest with a lot of staying power--you're not irritated by an excess of curiosity; it builds slowly and delights the mind.

I am eagerly drinking up every new episode, and I hope you will join me. I don't want this show to become another Firefly. Don't take the critics' reviews for granted--watch this show (MORE than one episode--the first episode always has to establish the setting, so it's never quite as smooth as the following endeavors!) and judge for yourself.

This can be disadvantageous though since it barely differentiates itself with other sci-fi mediums of the past. It doesn't seem that the show has big budget, but it could play with unique style like Alien's computer font from 70s or slightly oriental look of Firefly. Details such as the comms or panels fit its theme, it only needs more personality.

Story revolves around the amnesiac passengers of an unnamed ship. Everyone wakes up not knowing basic information about themselves, though their respective expertise seems to be instinctively intact. It keeps the balance between characters introduction and the puzzle aspect pretty well. However, some of the scenes are geared towards sci-fi fans, which may alienate casual viewers with the futuristic lingo.

Unfortunately, it has some rigid clichés with the actual stiff android, tech wiz child or silent yet deadly martial artist. Acting is a mixed bag. While the some of the actors have TV experience, most of them are fresh names. They have the chance to mold and identify the characters, although some of these characters might feel stereotypical.

It needs a bit polish on the effect as well, the parts where visual depict the ship are old fashioned. Again, this may be due to budget restriction. What it can control like the camera placements and action choreography are definitely presentable. At times, the show displays atmospheric sci-fi aptly even with basic design.

The crew of Space Amnesia might deliver nice premise despite the pedestrian production value. It might interest sci-fi fans, but it may be difficult to rival more refined shows.

    5. The two females who contradict gender roles by being nerdy and/or leaders...so edgy.

The 'plot' is a bunch of people who have no idea who they are or what they're meant to do on a ship. So basically, no real plot, no character development, and to the extent there is any, the characters are one dimensional. The themes are transparent SJW ones that aren't discussed at all beyond being noted.

Ultimately, this is a TV series that is either so scared of being criticized for not being PC enough that it can't make a single interesting character or plot point OR that this is a TV series that genuinely believes that putting a critical theory essay onto the small screen somehow makes a good TV series. In either case, it fails. Please do not watch.

The show seems to want to be Firefly but without the charismatic characters or witty writing. There are some blatant ripoffs. Watching Anthony Lemke is like watching a terrible impression of Adam Baldwin. Jodelle Ferland also seems to channeling her inner Summer Glau. The majority of the acting is as bland as cardboard and equally banal. When Will Wheaton puts in the best performance of the first season you know it's pretty bad. Nearly the entire cast is miscast. Melissa O'Neil is horribly miscast as the ship's "leader." I can't stop laughing at her fight scenes because she can't even manage a believable kick above her waist. Note to those casting a show: Make sure an actress is athletic enough to carry out a fight scene before casting her in an action role. She is also easily the most annoying character in the show largely due to the material given to her. Every episode I find myself hoping that the show will kill her off only to be disappointed. Zoie Palmer would have been a much better choice for that role. Her talent is wasted as the android (although her performance is one of the few positives ... even though it's unoriginal). Roger R. Cross is the only other actor to put in a worthwhile performance. The show would have been better off casting him in the lead. As far as the stories go, nearly every episode is predictable since most of the material is ripped off of superior intellectual property. Expand

For some reason their memories have been wiped and when their names are revealed they sound suspiciously like porn stars. .

It won't rest on just the story so it constantly throws in human at the dumbest times (middle of a fight, facing death, etc. It could have gone all dark and moody or high tech and ironic but it's a godawful combination of big spaceship, 1950's science fiction and the Old West. There's FTL yet we drive Ford pickups. Bar scenes resemble the 1970's and nurses are from 1950 (white with white pointed caps). It's hundreds of years in the future and despite 3d printers folks live in shanties and work in mines for the (you guessed it) evil corporation. Can this get any more conventional and banal?

Dialogue is juvenile, trite, dull (you get the pic) and the actors look embarrassed, confused or bored. Much of the time is spent running up and down long corridors (the ship must be the size of Rhode Island). Unlike Stargate Universe or Battlestar Galactica this has about as much depth as a cosmic ray.

Why?! Why?! I really REALLY want to like this show, I tried, but you had to make it so hard! So hard! Why?!

First of all, I don't think calling this show cliche quite fits the bill. Though it's obliviously trying to replicate Star Trek, Firefly, and maybe even Battlestar Galactica as a trendy epic. Nice try! Sucks, you lose! Could have seen past all that but there's quite a few weaknesses sucking up all the... what's the word?

Let me explain something to you writers and directors... NOBODY cares about a team of space adventurers in a space ship unless you FEEL like you're part of the crew. If it's not for the unsettling acting that goes with every scene, it's the direction that doesn't know how to film a bloody scene. How many opportunities can you miss to convey an emotion to the viewer? You let them walk in , hold a shot, deliver lines... what was that? obviously there's suspicion but you can still show the view, the story observer what else is being said. It's called body language. Something none of these characters have. I can't believe anybody, well, I could if they had some chutzpah!

I really like the concept if they could have just taken into account a little more understanding of the story. I can watch Dark Matter and get so annoyed because I admit to myself "I could have done it better". It's that feeling like I see what was supposed to happen there and... flop, bad timing, no connection, and One is a total **** oh god I want to rip his head off and through into space! At times it felt as if things, the awkward stances and line belting, were about to lift and like a ship leaving the station things were gonna get better. Awwwwwww and then CRASH you just couldn't fly the sucker!

Actors are actors and I believe a good director can use even the most mediocre one and make a good scene. But in this case, holy mother, there are two outstanding misplaced boys on this ship, and that's Six and One. I mean, they are ALL mediocre just because they don't know what else to do but be actors. Honestly I think half the crew are bad ass, or at least could have been. Even if Anthony Lemke's Three is a direct rip-off of Jayne, I wouldn't care. Every ship need's their muscle, whatever.

Alex Mallari Jr. is a bad ass, I don't care what anyone says.

Melissa O'Neil has nothing to do but give orders with a flair of the dramatic walkaway with (please stop the big dramatic speech, walk out of the room crap) waving her ass like the pirate ship ride at the fairgrounds, but I don't care, whatever.

Jodelle Ferland is cool, though an obvious mod combination of both Kaylee and River of Serenity (gotta have the funky one), and I think she does a fine job with what she's got, I don't care, whatever.

The Android. More robots learning emotion. I Don't CARE WHATEVER.

All these things were in the "let it slide" zone but...

Roger R. Cross. I like him, but unfortunately he hit's the **** list because although in a scene or two he eloquently shows his caring and nurturing side of himself with some tangible feeling, he is absolutely unable to carry on a sense that he was ever a bad-ass, and nothing more than a big soft teddy bear.

And now for the bane of it all, One. Yes, Mr. Marc Bendavid. I mean that pubescent, tin-man, toddler trying to meander around in big people clothes. If I could stick him in an airlock for every line that comes out of his doe-like expressions of terrible execution he would need quite a lot of clones... Even his "original face" actor was way better! I could tell he should of gotten the role. LOL! I thought Three might actually kill him, but things took a turn for the worst, and now they seem like they're getting along, which means more empty space for Anthony Lemke to fill with his rapscallion-like front on and on.

The concept of this series is based on a Dark Horse comic. I think the story would pan out to be spectacular and it really could've been an amazing sci-fi show, but you just can't throw a bunch of people in space suits and call it Dark Macaroni. Too bad... The background of it all definitely had some coolness of the space trek genre.

If you haven't seen this yet and you're a sci-fi fan, get ready to watch the entire thing cus you need it to fill the sci-fi void, while wishing to throw cans at the TV periodically, because the same people who brought it to you managed to take it away at the same time.

Really enjoying this show. Haven't been drawn in to a TV series for a while (being more of a Mass Effect person rather than Battlestar or Star Trek) and I feel like the show really hit the mark with the characters and story. Perhaps having a smaller budget helped keep these things in focus. Easy to get in to. I really hope it keeps running.

Blending elements of Star Trek, Lost, and Knight Rider, this new show from the producers of Stargate SG1, will have you talking about it and pining for the next episode.

Orbiting a planet out in deep space on the edges of civilization, six people wake up on a spaceship, with no memory of who they are or how they got there. After pairing up and searching the ship, they discover it's full of weapons. With the help of an android they find on board, the crew discovers they are orbiting a disputed planet and the weapons are likely for the colonists below. The crew quickly becomes attached to the colonists, that is until they learn the horrible truth, that they are mercenaries at the top of the galactic authorities most wanted list. They know they must be there to remove the colonist for one of the big corporations that now run the galaxy, but with the lose of their memories, came something no one could have expected, a conscience. Eventually, the crew of the ship called, The Raza, decide they have to stick together and find out who they are, where they're from, and what happened to them, so begins Dark Matter.

Each episode is another adventure, dealing with the authority, their old enemies, and their old employers. They don't know their friends from their enemies, but after each adventure they get another piece of the puzzle and we get a glimpse into their passed lives. Together with the crew, the audience has the pleasure of trying to figure out who these people were, what happened to them, and debate on where they may be going.

Much like Star Trek, this show has a virtually unknown cast, and is slowly producing it's own stars. I only recognized a couple of name, but the different skills each cast member present is as incredible and unique as the characters themselves. The women on board have moves that would make Bruce Lee jealous, but not to be overlooked is the cast interactions with each other, which often times are hilarious. The cast is diverse and so are the characters and their backgrounds, in coming together they all play on each others strengths and weaknesses to make this one of the most enjoyable shows on television.

I watch a lot of TV, probably a lot more than is healthy, but in all this time, there have only been a handful of shows that I can honestly say, I could not wait to see the next episode, Dark Matter is one of those shows. Honestly I get home early on the nights it on and put on SyFy fifteen minutes early so that I don't miss a second. The first two seasons are currently streaming, go and watch the pilot and I promise you, weather you love science fiction or not, Dark Matter will have you hooked.

Its also nice to see good guys who are flawed and selfish (for the most part), yet are also likeable, which I think is a sign of good character creation.

The universe is pretty interesting and borrows ideas from Eve Online and Battletech. This isnt a bad thing as its inspiration is from great sources and has managed to create a rather deep universe which is different enough from others to be new and interesting.

Casting was very good and all the cast deliver great performances for the most part. My personal favourite is 5 as we see go from random person to member of the crew and badass in her own right. But even the most unlikable of the characters Three (imo), has moments where his character is shown to have depth and likeability and its all acted out very well.

CGI is good for the budget and although we dont get to see too much cgi action, i assume due to the budget, the bits we get are nice and crisp. I especially like the FTL travel style when they jump, its very cool.

The story and pacing is excellent, it hands out revelations and backstory fast enough to keep you interested but not so fast as to blow its load all in one episode. Its has enough shocks and twists that they are fun and unexpected without being overused.

A fun side note its always good seeing some of my old favourites returning as new characters, Drs Rodney McKay and Elizabeth Weir being as awesome as ever :P.

I hope the show continues to be made after season two, I hope SyFy have faith in the show they have a bad habit of cancelling shows. Ive been telling everyone I know about the show and given how randomly I found out about it I suggest others to do the same. Its a good Sci-Fi TV Show and deserves more viewers than it gets. It has a story and characters which put some other well advertised shows to shame but sadly not the budget.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Starts PC Cliche then takes really dark dark turns.

The first few episodes you can take or leave (the miners episode in particular was god awful) however a really dark existential crisis starts to develop when the character back stories develop. Each back story is more horrific than the last. Consider this, the leader's rap sheet is considered "lite" with 46+ hand to hand kills escaping her corporate creation lab. The black guy was the worse, he inadvertently killed over 10,000 civilains with a nuclear bomb. In the last or second to last episode the entire crew delivers technology to a planet killing 16,500 researchers. Leader spaces a dude in cold cold blood, and even the teen wiz kid cliche has to get her hands dirty giving the gun to a hostile dude, shooting him to death in the back. So while it does start off as a cliched PC wank fest (really really bad) it rapidly morphs into a really nasty blood bath. Also it's the only show I've ever watched where armor on troops stops bullets and they had to be offed in their weak spots at close range.
If I had to guess I would have to say that the first group of Firefly wannabe PC cliche loving writers got their asses fired when the ratings sagged and the B-Team non PC hardcores got a shot, thus raising the body count and the gore and lowering the Mayberry Gosh Shucks to a literal zero. By way of a point, nearly all of the characters have killed in cold blood, or a now survivalist, defensive killers.
By the 10th episode the hatred and self loathing are palpable. Thus it lives up, finally, to it's name Dark Matter.

Political correctness is not ignored either with the now de rigueur appearance of a roughly 50kg chick regularly throwing around multiple guys at least twice her size. Oh god, will the **** never stop.

The show is primarily set on board a space ship which is just breath taking in it's size. The crew of 6 seem to be onboard a ship the size of the Enterprise which has a crew of over 1,000 people. Important maintenance areas of the engine are only accessible from outside the ship, which is very odd to say the least. We have a band of galactic criminals (mercenaries) who behave to situations like ordinary mum & dads who prefer to run, hide and cry than resolve a threat.

This is a really bad show with very little in the way of redeeming qualities.
