Damages proves once again why it is one of the smartest thrillers on TV.
-
The first episodes are very promising, full of feints, fibs, and a big, fat shock. [16 Jul 2012, p.40]
-
Her Patty knows how to spread the hurt. Get in on Damages' final round.
-
Some wild twists, but you've seen a variation before on one of them. Nevertheless, the Patty Hewes story is almost over, and in Close's hands, it's still compulsively watchable.
-
Damages' endgame is on, and so far it's a doozy--with a fatalistic framework suggesting not everyone emerges alive.
-
While the show's certainly grown more tightly plotted in the last several seasons, especially after cutting the number of episodes down to 10 and reducing (often via murder) the number of secondary characters, Damages is still suffering from some seemingly needless bloat.
-
Not everything works on the show--and its principal device, providing glimpses foreshadowing what's to come, can become a bit maddening--but there's a clear focus to these first two hours auguring what could be a truly whiz-bang finish.
-
It still drives you crazy with flashbacks, flash-forwards, fantasies and all manner of other tricks that do help define the show's ambience, but which often interrupt the story as much as they enhance it.
