If you’re going to watch Dalgliesh—and really, I hope you do—put down your phone. Put down your phone, turn your subtitles on, and let yourself fall under the spell of television that trusts you to actually watch.

Bertie Carvel brings a quietly dashing tone of pensive authority to this multilayered and romantic character: a detective, widower, poet. [25 Oct - 7 Nov 2021, p.9]

For all their intrinsic power, these images of sudden horror are mere details compared with the storytelling that brings this series to roaring life (the script was written by Helen Edmundson).

If you like straightforward British procedurals based on classic characters, than Dalgliesh won’t disappoint. But there seems to be a lost opportunity to dive more into Dalgliesh’s interesting character, especially given who is playing the detective this time around.

Guess Dalgleish is the fictional character PD James made her bones in the literary world with, like Conan Doyle did with Holmes. Never read any of the books, or have seen any of the previous on screen versions of this character, but I did very much enjoy the stoic almost seething detective from Scotland Yard. Will be tuning in weekly for more. Full Review »
