This is hollywood doesn’t think people will put money where their mouth is for fantasy/sci fi.

They put in **** casting/writing - go low budget on agi and costumes and set design.

And then when people don’t get to suspension of disbelief - because it takes more effort to get there with these genres - they act surprised when people call a turd a turd.

4 different times in the FIRST episode spike and jet laughed togethor like it was a **** 90s sitcom buddy buddy scene - the fact that they put one of these in much leas four shows how utterly disconnected they are from the source material. the og Bebop is about somber and melancholy topics - which their hopelessness leads to sometimes humorous antics due to their absurdity in the face of existence - with a soundtrack to match.

honestly with the soundtrack the way it is in the first episode - i would be surprised if the execa that greenlit this only watched the opening credits - the entire episode was clearly written by the same guy that writes ninja turtles. its a **** cartoon turned into a live action. Not a cul genre defining anime. Hollywood doesn’t see thw difference. but we do. 0/10. I knew as soon as they released the opening cut scene weeks ago they missed the entire voice and feel of the original - but this is a drop down the stairs abortion of the original content. **** off hollywood - do fantasy/sci fi **** right, or don’t do it all.

Unfortunately, trying to replicate an almost perfect animation series in live-action was a monumental task to start. As a cowboy bebop series it's meh. The characters for the most part aren't as developed as the cartoon versions. Jet Black is the exception. I felt his character here is well done and pretty spot on. John Cho does an admirable job trying to get Spike down, but there is just something off about it. There are glimmers of the character there but it's just not as well done. The biggest disappointment is Faye's character. I don't think the portrayal here is anything close to the tone of the cartoon version. The personality of this Faye doesn't seem nearly as damaged or have the weight that we see in the cartoon. I feel like had they made a live-action movie in the Bebop world but not tried to tackle the same characters, they might have had something. There are a lot of bounty hunters in this world and a lot of lore to expand upon. Like always, they try to retread the same ground and end up failing to replicate the same characters in a way that resonates with fans. If you haven't seen the cartoons, then you might like it. I could see people just like it as a sci-fi show if they had no reference to compare it against, but unfortunately that's not me. I love the original series and think it's practically perfect in every way. Expand

They ruined the mysteriousness of Vicious and Julia by giving them way too many melodramatic scenes. The actor they got to play Vicious is way too over the top. They turned him into a moustache twirling villain.

They turned Faye into like an annoying child. The world itself feels much smaller. They made pointless connections to characters, but that shrinks the scope. Didn't these guys used to travel through space to different planets? It feels like they are in same planet all the time.

What you get feels like fan fiction and cosplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an example of how American west coast people thinks about anime, aiming it to teen 'woke' pc culture for America, missing it the whole point of the series and the world itself, shinichiro Watanabe has an interview where he explains how they didn't give a **** about his notes, and there was no comments from any actors about the characters, looks like they have some pc lines to follow, this proves how us doesn't care about any kind of art, bc lets be real here, r u gonna stop paying Netflix? Bc they already have ur money n they r doing whatever they want, don't let them brain wash ur head, we should start cancelling our subscription to them, then they will feel the hit. Expand

I think it’s pretty obvious at this point that a lot of anime tropes and character styles just don’t work in live action adaptations. This series is pretty faithful to the original and you can tell the creators are fans of the anime, but II think it’s pretty obvious at this point that a lot of anime tropes and character styles just don’t work in live action adaptations. This series is pretty faithful to the original and you can tell the creators are fans of the anime, but I think that faithfulness was its downfall. There are a lot of moments here that just didn’t translate well and came off VERY cringey. It’s not because the scenes were necessarily acted badly or anything like that (matter of fact the cast did their best all things considered) its just that seeing real people act like anime characters is hard to watch. It comes off very stiff and strange. For example, Ed is almost an exact copy of her anime counterpart, but that’s the problem. Ed acts like a total crackhead in the anime, and seeing a real person act like that was extremely hard to watch and made me and my friends visibly recoil from cringe. It felt like we were watching a low budget kids movie when she was on on screen. The story is fine (although they had the audacity to change parts of it), but it’s just overshadowed by laughably awkward dialogue and cringe moments. Expand

To no surprise when an anime adaptation finally comes closer to getting it right the snobs roll out in droves giving Cowboy Bebop a terrible rating with no real explanation.

As many times I rewatched Cowboy Bebop (anime) I can't say I fully agree with their plot direction here and it becomes more convoluted with rotating directors and writers for each episode. Having said that I actually enjoyed watching these characters and the environment come to life.

The casting was thoughtful and diverse, but lacking with characters here and there. Vicious definitely could've been better and Spike was very loosely adapted but what bothered me most about Spike was how he seemed to lack screen time and diverse scenes.

The visuals are satisfying and don't give a cheap feel, but certain scenes weren't dressed well and there's this radial blur digitized in the picture that Netflix series tend to utilize too much. They took a lot of visual details from the series itself and the paint this universe and time period almost perfectly.

At the end of it all I thoroughly enjoyed it, I just wish a bigger budget was involved here or perhaps a more triumphant company overtook this project. Cowboy Bebop would've been perfect maybe in the hands of production workings under HBO Max or Disney Plus.

I also found it extremely distracting that they blackwashed a white character only because of their diversity agenda (look at their website, search for Netflix Diversity). So they initially complained about supposed "whitewashing" by Hollywood in anime adaptions when most characters in anime kinda look white (and not Japanese) yet they went ahead and blackwashed a white character because they claimed the actor was the best choice but makes no sense since Jet was the worst character in this entire show by far. Adaption? More like parody. Expand

The problem is that you'd need a filmmaker who takes it seriously and respect the intelligence of the audience. The anime touched upon such intense scenes and existential topics and this completely missed the mark. I did not want a beat for a beat but if the team understood the source material and its philosophical element I think this would have been able to be achieved. They can say : "You are just haters"

More like I don't want respected, medium-defining works like Cowboy Bebop to be mishandled at it was here. They ruined Faye's storyline and character it is a completely different persona. Faye in the source material personality-wise was very realistic and I do not understand for the life of me why they rewrote her that way (in every way). The saving grace is Mustafa Shakir as Jet he was the only one to truly embody his character and Cho has good moments too. Overall they missed the philosophical, moral essence of the original that existential necessary component. It lost its bebop soul.

It’s fairly entertaining just to pass the time with that being said im angry but more so disappointed that they changed the plot, the audacity!

Jon did a ok job as spike but should have been Keane reeves, jet was the best performance by a landslide and Faye was terribly portrayed to say the least.
Julia performance was also bad they should have casted someone else the same could be said for Faye even Ein did a better job.

Visuals were fine one minute but not the next it’s truly puzzling why this is but that was the least of the problems I had with the show.

As a long time fan of the original anime and anime movie I am truly disappointed in this adaptation and while watching it I feel like there are two people fighting over how to make this show and do the source material justice .

Think of this show as a multiverse Cowboy Bebop. Alternate universe Bebop. The main characters all channel their animated counterparts very well. There's lots of familiar but with enough changes that you don't know everything that'll happen. By episode 3 I had dropped my expectations and just went for the ride, and honestly loved it. My Cowboy Bebop fandom started in 2001 when I saw Knockin' on Heaven's Door on DVD, and have been hooked ever since.
Is the show absolutely perfect? Of course it can't be. But the main characters really come into their own. For the kind of untested production it was, Cho is right to be proud of this. I am proud of this.
There's a bit of tonal whiplash at the end of this season with Ed's introduction, which really could've been handled more carefully, instead comes off ham-fisted. But you gotta give it a benefit of the doubt, because who thought this first season would be so enjoyable? There's so much to love, despite some missteps like using tracks from the original show that don't necessarily match the tone, some CGI that could've been better (though a lot of it looks fantastic), but not in too many instances for something as untested as this. Ed's reveal was too loud and direction for the character mismatched with its anime counterpart (Ed's not that much of a yeller in anime). Midway through the season I got even more emotionally engaged as some stuff tugged on my heartstrings, maybe because the original show also has, which to me means that they ultimately succeeded. If anything's missing or could be more prominent, it could've leaned into the melancholy of all these characters. In the show, they were all kinda loners. Here they have prominent relationships and it feels like they're not quite as lonely as the original show made them out to be. Despite that, the show comes into its own and is very fun as long as you wilfully suspend disbelief. Could it be better? No doubt there's things to improve, but if the show gets a second season and I certainly hope they do, I'm sure things can be fixed up going forward with the first season's hindsight. I'll definitely be rewatching the season at least a couple times more in the foreseeable future, because even with some of its missteps, it's the first genuine-feeling Cowboy Bebop we've gotten in decades, and I myself and ravenous for more.

COWBOY BEBOP – NETFLIX REVIEW
Reviewed on 4K

If there is one thing that scare fans of beloved anime series, is the fact that sometimes the source material is not taken into consideration for developing the story and its characters in these adaptations, but thankfully the producers of the show did a fantastic job in not only taking the source material at its core, but adding few extra things to the mix to blend everything and the recipe is a fantastic adaptation if not the BEST adaptation of an anime show ever! Stop reading stupid reviews of people that do not appreciate what has been done in here, you are in for a ride cowboy, and 3, 2, 1, let’s jam!

SETTING
In the not-so-distant future, where intergalactic travel is done thanks to hyperspace engines, the humans have conquered the solar system, establishing colonies in almost all of the planets. Cowboy Bebop setting puts an unlikely trio of space bounty hunters who are always almost short on cash, and hungry by the way, in different stories where their main objective is to capture juicy targets to claim woolongs and live a life!

PERFORMANCES
Ok, this is one of the strongest parts of the show… I was not preoccupied by the show’s cast as, as soon as I saw the trailers, I was thunderstruck with the poignant yet amazing performances of the main cast… My favorite character in the anime is Spike, he is a cool somewhat clumsy guy with a dark past, but he is a total badass in the anime show, and in the adaptation, John Cho has shut a lot of mouths with his performance. He is dark and aggressive (perhaps not as bad ass as his counter part in the show) but he fills the character naturally, and what I love most is that he cares about his partner, something that I thought was not present in the original show. The fighting sequences of Spike are exciting and filled with the anime touch of exaggerating some of the moves and situations, which is what I expect as no anime show does not aggrandize everything it presents… it is what we Otaku people love about anime!
Mustafa Shakir interpretation of Jet Black is so cool, that he is absolutely my favorite character in the adaptation. He was not my favorite character in the original show, but he did such an incredible performance in his role as the leader of the Bebop crew, that I was totally hooked in with him. You will like him as he adds naturally a different but familiar flavor to Jet. He retains his calmed demeanor, and you can clearly see that if Spike is the clumsy one, Jet is the brains of the crew.
And finally, Faye Valentine, which was not my favorite character in the original show, trapped me in such a way, that if I have one complaint about this show is that Daniella Pineda needed to appear more! She is incredible, she added additional value to her character, and I actually love her, the Faye of the show was a bit of stiff and cold, and the worst opportunist ever… instead, in the adaptation, she is pretty much a thief and an opportunist, but she is loveable and tender, something I did not get from the original character. Her performance is great, and I want more of her for season 2. She was THAT good!

VISUALS
I can only say that visually this adaptation has everything: from CGI settings to real toys and my absolute preferred sequences are when they lift off in their ships. For me this was always iconic and when I first saw Spike taking off in the Swordfish, I gave out a smile because I knew at that moment that the show was there to stay with me. The Bebop itself, which is where most of the time the characters hang out is amazing, it is like if they did copy paste the anime show into this scenario. I cannot skip the show’s prelude as the visuals along the music are like watching an anime come to life. It is incredible!

SOUND
Ok, Yoko Kanno returns! Yes, for the ones who do not know her she is a successful Japanese composer who has created a lot of soundtracks for different shows and video games. Her compositions shine along the show, and I cannot see another way of telling us, fans of Cowboy Bebop how much of the source material was included and magnified.

FINAL VERDICT:
My final Verdict is a 10 for this adaptation.
Forget the stupid reviews and let yourself go. The comedy, the thrilling action, the characters, the ships, the space travel, the bounty hunting, the villains, the heroes, and almost everything you saw in the original show is there! John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda made an outstanding job in bringing the original characters to life whilst adding a different flavor which I absolutely adored. I want this show to keep going, please Netflix, let’s jam with more seasons, keep us hooked in, do not pay attention to people who does not fully appreciate what you did here. As a fan of this beloved anime classic, I am open to new ideas, and you rocked this, thank you for this and keep it coming… see you in space cowboys!

The main fault of this series is not in it's accuracy of adaptation - it's the core execution of a competently made show in 2021.

If so.etbi g feels off with the show and you can't quite put your finger on it - it's because the sets are lit awkwardly, a TON of cast is poorly acted and realized, and for some reason (potentially covid) there are far too many scenes between two actors where it's painfully obvious that they aren't in the same room.

From a cinematography standpoint, you can't get lazier than this. Nothing but locked off shots, over the shoulder AB shots, and the odd offlevel shot.

This show feels like a lukewarm attempt at an adaptation, executed in the absolute cheapest way possible. It really needed a different production team and a more focused vision.

If you haven't seen the original - expect a very awkward low budget sci Fi move with an identity crisis.

If you have seen the original, expect the same as above.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Other than trying to cash in on nostalgia this was a very painful experience to watch. Other than Jett I couldn’t stand the cast in this. Netflix really didn’t learn it lesson after Deathnote. At least I could go back and watch the anime again on Netflix. I know Keanu Reeves has gotten older but I wish he could have played Spike as it was originally intended years ago when they tried to make a live action movie. Expand

Huge fan of the anime version, and I do not think they captured what made the show great. If you’ve watched the anime, odds are you’d probably hate this. Underwhelming is all I can say, almost felt like a cheap live action
