    Mr Frank is an amazingly bold politician, not only because of his gay story, but because of his relentless pursuit for good causes, refusal to tolerate idiots and earnest work. This doc effectively captures his history and delightfully caustic sense of humor.

    It’s enlightening, but rarely serves as more than a rah-rah rally for Rep. Frank, who is the subject and source material for the film.

    Naturally, the movie has hagiographic leanings. This is a portrait of an accomplished man at the end of his career, and it looks back with admiration.

    While Compared to What provides welcome insight into the man, his contributions and how the times gradually changed around him, the filmmakers could have used a clearer road map before embarking on this improbable, scattered, yet mostly entertaining “Journey.”
