This Coma is different enough from the 1978 movie to have its own appeal, and the cast keeps things interesting even during plot lulls.
-
[Coma] is sometimes entertaining, sometimes infuriating.
-
If you can live through the ridiculous hustle-forward, no-looking introduction to the story, what follows is entertaining enough, albeit in a mildly campy way.
-
Coma still provides a few arresting images of what happens to the coma victims, but there's simply too much silliness in the overwrought second half.
-
The bigger mistake is seeing the story as just a gussied-up whodunit. That may make Coma passably enjoyable, but it doesn't make it very scary.
-
With more time, this Coma might have provided more thrills and chills, and also explored some of the monumental issues raised by changing technologies, corporate interests, and political frameworks. Unfortunately, it doesn't do any of this.
-
Only Ellen Burstyn, stalking around with a leg brace and a killer accent, seems to have seized the opportunity amid all the silliness to enjoy a taste of the scenery.
