The versatile Ms. Nielsen (“Gladiator,” “The Good Wife,” “Wonder Woman”) maintains a grip on our attention even while making Jo sometimes hard to like or, in other words, complicated. The six-part series rides on her performance, though Mr. Eccleston’s characteristically deft turn as Rob is no less critical. ... What distinguishes the show from any number of other similarly constructed melodramas set in upscale English seaside villages are the rhythms maintained by both director Michael Samuels and writer Angela Pell.

For all its adherence to the psychodrama/mystery genre, Close to Me is gratifyingly full of realistic grace notes.

Utterly wild stuff that runs the risk of taking itself too seriously.

The problem with the first episode of Close to Me is that it didn’t execute its premise very well. The cast was good, but the delivery strangely stilted and unnatural as if they were all in a hostage situation. ... The good news is that episode two is better.

It’s one of those schlocky psychological thrillers (adapted from a bestselling novel by Amanda Reynolds) that would be perfectly suited to Channel 5.
