The middle stretch of the season lags a bit in parts when the big-picture ideas don’t exactly line up with these individual, isolated incidents. When the built-in advantage of a show is the necessity for conciseness, those chapters don’t necessarily drag down the show’s overall potency. But when “Calls” is locked in, it’s an especially effective slice of horror. That usually comes when the show sticks to the “less is more” side of things.

Streaming services engage in all kinds of stunts in order to gain attention, and there's no denying that this amounts to a bit of a gimmick. Even so, for the couple of hours in our time that it takes to watch/listen to the chapters, "Calls" is an invitation worth answering.

Calls is wholly immersive and totally chilling, a unique storytelling experience able to send shivers down your spine without the help of on-camera actors.

Unfortunately, Calls isn't engaging enough on the most basic of levels for experiential experiments. Yes, I think if you sit in a darkened corner of your home and watch Calls on your cell phone with top-tier headphones, interrupted only by the strangest noises possible from outside your window, it might work as an entertaining two+-hour radio play. But that's way too much specialized effort for a show that, unfortunately, isn't all that special.

Phenomenal. The plot is so immersive and intricate. The format is unique. The voicework is in a league of it's own. This changed so much gor me.

Anyway these are still my expectations, and if you put them aside, then this is a solid audio series about strange things happening all over the country, which to some extent unite people.
