This is fascinating (meaty; analytical) viewing and a huge treat for tennis aficionados, featuring interviews with John McEnroe, Björn Borg, Novak Djokovic, Ivan Lendl and more.

While it is naturally big on the technicalities of tennis, there is a humanistic story at the center that is appealing to everyone.

Prolixity apart, Boom! Boom! tells a great story and throws in an intriguing thesis to boot.

“Boom Boom” has a hard time justifying the exhaustive three and a half hours, in two parts, that the irons-in-many-fires Gibney delivered to Apple TV+. In sports metaphor terms, Gibney didn’t lay a glove on him. But it’s still a worthwhile film, simply in a sporting sense.

Gibney allows his documentary to meander. This project will struggle to hold the attention of anybody who isn’t a devotee of a specific era of tennis. Even as a tennis fan and somebody who grew up admiring Becker in particular, I found myself frequently pondering how many interesting ideas Gibney has in Boom! Boom! and how poorly they sometimes coalesce.

Despite some great archive material and nice interview turns, this documentary portrait of disgraced German tennis legend Boris Becker from film-maker Alex Gibney is a frustrating and disappointing experience – because of the baffling way it is structured, both unrevealing and anticlimactic.
