Jun 18, 2023Episode 1 was good, except for being extremely silly.
2 didn't feel like a Black Mirror episode at all. Neither did 4 or 5.
4 and 5 were awful, in fact.
Episode 3 was excellently performed and shot, but there wasn't much to it.
Incredibly disappointing season compared to all the previous. -
Jun 16, 2023Ep 1: 3/5. Recursion is cool.
Ep 2: 5/5. Actually good interesting story.
Ep 3: 2/5. Predicted what would happen within the first ten minutes.
Ep 4: 1/5. Don't care.
Ep 5: 1/5. Anti-white racism. -
Jul 1, 2023Joan is awful 6/10
Loch henry 7/10
Beyond the sea 5/10
Mayzwy day 6/10
Demon 79 8/10
6.8/10 Overall
Somewhat disappointed with this season. It leans towards fantasy and horror and away from the titular black mirror of technophobic nightmare scapes from previous seasons (I assume this is because the world itself has slowly become one!). Interesting and entertaining for the most part. -
Jun 16, 2023I was surprised at the 68 after seeing the first two episodes. Sad to hear they had to have a woke one, but that's pretty much required of any franchise these days. And 5 episodes? After how many years? C'mon man, 8 at least.

Jun 16, 2023Total and utter disgust at how someone deals with bullies...by torturing them.
Just because someone was bullied when they were young, does not mean they can write a TV show in which there is nothing cathartic to enjoy, just pure joy in seeing people suffer.
Darkness is only seductive if you have not been taught how to look for the light. -
Jul 15, 2023Episode 1: kind of funny, but very cynical and silly at the end.
Episode 2: good and tragic.
Episode 3: the best one; makes you wonder about how avatars would be received by society.
Episode 4: the worst one; the supernatural element is dumb.
Episode 5: not bad; it reminded me of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, but it doesn't fit into Black Mirror. -

Jul 26, 2023Episodes 1 and 3 are really good. But all other ruins the Black Mirror vector and genre... It's just lost season.

While the new collection isn’t perfect – Black Mirror still has a tendency to get knocked off course by an overload of Hollywood presence – this is an assured return to form: a much tastier geek-noir pick’n’mix.
-
Black Mirror’s new stories are more concerned with changing the show’s reputation as a speculative science-fiction series than with actually critiquing technology.

There are familiar (maybe even obvious) themes here: data harvesting, terrifying small print, surveillance by Big Brother. Yet “Joan is Awful” doesn’t succumb to predictable tropes, retaining a winking sense of humour. [The score is the average of the reviews for the five episodes.]
