I liked black mirror because it was dark, edgy and shocking. Now it feels americanised and sold out.

It's the shadow of Black Mirror from the previous seasons. Rehashed ideas, boring plots (the 1st episode is soooo long). Acting of Anrew Scott was great though, he pulled the second episode up somewhat.

Easily the worst season of black mirror so far. It lacks the depth of story and social/technology message that all of the other seasons carry throughout.

Clearly the worst season, an incredible series that has become any more in these three new episodes totally simple, bland and without passing some message, was a terrible return, not a plot twist had, the second episode looks like a movie made by a director beginner, the others are quite simple and does not catch the viewer, disappointing.

Episode 1 was meh. It didn't feel like a Black Mirror episode and it was forced. Episode 2 felt more normal and was probably the best episode of the season. It had strong acting and a powerful message. While Miley Cyrus was great and drove the 3rd episode, It still had the worst and most predictable plot. Ironically, it felt like a Disney channel movie.

Worst season so far. The concepts for each episode were preposterous. The only saving grace for each episode was the acting which saved the wretched plots. Miley Cyrus was superb in a ridiculously bad episode. Hopefully the writers rally for the next season or add to this season because it went downhill fast from Season 4 until now. What happened?

Easily the worst season, full of cringe moments, bad acting and ham-fisted twists.

By far the worst season of 'Black Mirror', the plots were super flat and uninteresting.

I can't help but feel like the show writers didn't really have a point with this batch of stories. There's like zero social or cultural commentary, just slightly science fiction short stories. It's fine i guess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, episode 1 was definitely something. I personally believe that it was kinda appealing to lgbtq audience in a way. Which is not bad but it still feels forced as f***. Episode 2 was leagues better than the first episode, but it felt out of place as a black mirror episode. Episode 3 was what I've been waiting from black mirror. If it wasn't for EP 1 I would have gave this season a 7. Expand

Frustrating... With all the great characters, they still couldn't do a great job with this season which I think is the worst (tied with the one). Disappointing...

It's decent. Too shallow in many parts. Writing seems rushed too often. Expected more

This season was overall, a failure. I have always believed that Black Mirror was too pretentious, but this season did not even try to say something meaningful, it just resorted to pure techno-cynicism.

Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too - 8/10 - This episode really surprised me, of the 3 it was the one I felt would be the toughest to get through. Cyrus was a surprise here with this episode securing the best screenplay for the season. The blackness of that mirror is present here and yet somehow the episode maintained a positive feel to it. Was only missing that 'x factor' to push it beyond the comfort zone into something truly outstanding.

    Thoughts on Season 5:

Episode 1: Striking Vipers - 60 minutes of "no homo bro". A strange and awkward concept, but I can totally see this happening - the future where sexuality isn't confined to labels. Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Beharie were all great. Without spoiling anything, but I think the episode should've ended in the car. Episode 2: Smithereens - This

Episode 2: Smithereens - This was probably the most Black Mirror episode on Black Mirror ever.

While the message is a little too obvious, but Andrew Scott powerhouse performance kept things afloat. You know, coming to think of it, this devastating event was only a second glance at a screen for the global world. How sad is that.

Episode 3: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too - The parallels between Ashley and Miley is striking. yet purposeful, but didn't go anywhere deep or meaningful with it besides "music business is bad". I honestly can't stand this episode. Is this the best they got?

One bad episode, one mediocre episode, and one good episode. I expect more from Black Mirror.

The three instalments vary in mood, genre and just about everything else (as anthologies are designed to do) but they share a new air of calm authority. There’s an unhurriedness to each, a greater willingness to linger and develop moments that might have passed as a single beat in other seasons that perhaps bespeaks an increasing confidence of Black Mirror’s creators in their product. If so, it’s been well-earned.

Two of the three stories making up Black Mirror's fifth season offers a more hopeful vision. Things get kinker and funkier in the "Striking Vipers" episodes... In the most purely enjoyable hour, "Rachel, Jack And Ashley Too," Miley Cyrus is a delight. [10 - 23 Jun 2019, p.9]

It may not be on the level of classic Black Mirror and the mirror may not show us as much as it used to, but it’s still a fine place to look for digital-era self-reflection. Just don’t expect this run of episodes to break your brain.
