As a fan of the past two seasons, I was fairly disappointed by this season of Black Mirror. For me this whole season felt way too expository and spent more time explaining every facet of the technology introduced. Even the episode I thought delivered best on its story (Nosedive) felt drawn out and way too expository for my liking and so did not feel like a core episode of the series I grewAs a fan of the past two seasons, I was fairly disappointed by this season of Black Mirror. For me this whole season felt way too expository and spent more time explaining every facet of the technology introduced. Even the episode I thought delivered best on its story (Nosedive) felt drawn out and way too expository for my liking and so did not feel like a core episode of the series I grew to love over the past few years. Otherwise, I thought episodes like "Shut Up and Dance" were much more in line with episodes from previous seasons, but also seemed to retread ideas the series has already explored.

Overall, I still maintain the show is better off continuing with Netflix than simply not existing anymore. Nonetheless, I do not think this season was anywhere near as thought provoking as the previous seasons and whenever I do go back to the series in the future I fully intend to skip season 3 and stick to seasons 1/2 and the holiday special.

In its third season, which reflects its new home’s disdain for modesty with much longer episodes and its most extended season yet, there’s less consistency than in past outings but a more prominently demonstrated desire to swing for the fences.

The payoff--Black Mirror promises no happy endings but the conclusions are always thought-provoking--is worth it.

No show of this sort scores only home runs, but mirror's batting average is very high. [24 Oct-6 Nov 2016, p.17]
