This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NO DETAILED SPOILERS HERE, BUT I DO COMMENT ON SOME DYNAMICS AND STRUCTURE: The haters here have completely lost me and it's preposterous to rate this show with a freakin ZERO??? I was riveted with nearly every gripping episode and personally loved all the back and forth outwitting and one-upping each other, and on top of that it constantly explored character. This stuff isn't easy to write not just from a dramatic perspective, but the knowledge of finance, New York, Law, and politics is also mind-blowing. My only real complaint is that there are too many pop-culture references by so many characters, even though the show at one point actually makes fun of that when Wags starts dating a woman decades younger than him and she repeatedly points out that she doesn't get any of the references. And okay, there are a couple spots where I'm not sure characters were 100% consistent with what we know about them as people, and there is one episode that's a bit silly and everyone involved should have known better than to unanimously jump into such an obviously reckless situation, even if it's an inherently temporary one (although it is justified if you argue what the biggest influencer of the situation is currently obsessed with and going through). And then of course the real reason people are upset with this season was no fault of the showrunners or any of the cast. Expand

Despite all the sub-plots about cryptomining and company mergers and other things I probably missed, this isn’t really a show about the world of high finance. It’s about masculinity and ego. All that testosterone is keeping the show going, but let’s hope the writers know when it’s time to send these characters into retirement.

It's still a wild ride through high society spheres and exclusive nooks, fetchingly sold by Lewis' and Giamatti's performative swagger. "Billions" also is the rare premium cable series that mixes prestige production slickness with broad cultural appeal. ... Only this time around, each man's ennui feels a little hollower.

The bottom line is that Showtime's high-stakes drama remains enormously entertaining, making its return more than welcome, even if the show's latest creative bets feel somewhat hedged.
