It remains one of the most joyous, heartfelt shows out there.

To highlight just how gorgeous and poignant Big Boys is almost feels like a disservice to the comedy. There are plenty of knob jokes too. But it is a beautiful blend, and it deserves all the success it has had.

One of the things most loved about Big Boys is its warmth and kindness. I actually prefer its sharp observations on mid-2010s Britain, whether political ("IndyRef") or its appreciation of hun culture. But there's no doubt the season finale is a right tear-jerker.

This is life-affirming stuff with, importantly, a vein of sadness running through it.

The return of Big Boys is perfect January TV. It’s heartwarming and hilarious – you won’t want to leave its colourful cocoon.

The performances by Llewellyn, Odele, Hoyle and Wix (not to mention Camille Coduri as Jack’s mum and Harriet Webb as his cousin Shannon) are rendered in bright, technicolour strokes, but the comedic focal point is Pointing’s Danny. The unexpected tenderness of “lad” culture, as it intersects with the diverse reality of modern higher education, is something that no show captures better.
