While the Arrowverse is generally quite diverse and accepting, those values are sprinkled in and grow in other shows while Batwoman jumps right into the deep end in episode one. This earned accolades from myself and my peers, but from conservatives, this is offputting and makes the show a target. Instead of watching the show and forming an opinion, they don't give it a chance. I myself thought that the show was less political than the trailers implied, though those are of course made tailored to however they want to advertize the show. It is politically correct without being pushy, if you watch the show and not just the trailer or fanboy reviews. It's a shame that more people don't give the show a chance, because the complex relationships are in themselves engaging. Of course, you can expect some family drama with Kate being related to Batman, but her other family members had a few surprises in store. Not just the big one you might expect, but one I didn't see coming from a character I didn't think would get recognition or have much of a role. The show is gaining its footing and learning how to write its characters, and so far they're on the right track to having strong female representation, character development, and relationships that shape the narrative. We need more shows like this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batwoman is my 2nd favorite new show of 2019, my favorite superhero show, my favorite DC Comics show, and one of my favorite shows of all time. The acting is outstanding especially from Rachel Skarsten and Ruby Rose. The stunts are awesome and very well executed. The costumes were stupendous especially the ones that Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Nicole Kang, and Elizabeth Anweis wore. The makeup and hairstyling was excellent especially on Ruby Rose and Rachel Skarsten. The writing and storylines are superb, I love the alternate Earth sister storyline. An A+ first season to me. Now in season two again I found the scripts ridiculous until the part where she suffers from Kryptonite poisoning. Finally for me the writers came back to lucidity and put the lot of action. All that's left is to arrest Alice, who is getting annoying. I think it will be a shot in the foot if they don't finish her cycle this second season. Let her be arrested, she comes back about three seasons ahead, but now it's not possible anymore. That's my opinion. Expand

For these people it is more important to spend time trashing something then to just simply ignore it, which is the normal thing to do with things you do not like.

And now the show.
Like the other DC shows this is good enough to be entertaining.
The main character is likable enough. The actress play the character well enough.
The villans on the other hand is on the weak side, she lacks the things that makes a good or even decend villain, she simple does not look, sound, or act enough like a great villain and that hurts the show.
The side characters are hit and miss. Some fits and act as they should, others are misscase or simple wrote in a poor way.

The writing is okay, not great, not bad, just middle of the line okay.

The political stuff. Yes it is here, then again if you actually know anything at all about comic books you know that this is not something strange. Is it in your face all the time? No, it is not. Actually, when it is there it does not feel forced like the shows trailer would make you think.

In short, after watching 11 episodes more then the 0-1 people: A decent show.

Nothing here is amazing, but it deserves to rise above the hate campaign being organized against it by people who can't stand to see a gay woman be in the superhero spotlight even in a small time CW show.

However, the show alters the origin story of the main character to justify her antagonistic stance towards Batman. There is no good reason why Batwoman needs to antagonize Batman in order to be her own character, and the original runs of Batwoman in Detective Comics prove it. But then again, you don't need to despise men in order to be a smart, independent woman, which the current progressive thinking seems to ignore. The writing is ok by CW standards, meaning you will need to disconnect your logic and / or common sense to enjoy the show. The acting is all over the place depending on the character. The kids are terrible. Ruby Rose is not bad at all, but some of her lines are simply ridiculous, and I don't think she has the experience to compensate that with a masterful delivery or the power to demand a change to the script. If you are not a fundamentalist from any of the ideological factions making this show their private battlefield, I would recommend watching a couple more episodes. If it becomes heavy-handed with the identity politics, cut your loses and watch something else. Or, if you are interested in the original character, read Detective Comics issues 854 to 863. My understanding is that they are sold together as a graphic novel for 25 bucks, so you don't have to break the bank. And they are good. Expand

Note: the majority of reviewers reflect their personal shortcomings and weaknesses over the show and there is nothing to do with it. The objective reality is that...

It's just plain boring. There is nothing wrong with the actor or character choices explicitly. The narrative is just not exciting and doesn't offer anything above other CW shows. It's the same formula, same drama, same everything just with darker lighting on the scenes. The creators clearly didn't have a unique vision of the show, but were "What if we do the same, with the only bat person we can have at the time?" The result is a resounding ... meh.

That said, it feels rushed, joyless and by the numbers. Bad numbers. I like Alice and Mary, and the show probably should be exclusively about them, since everyone else is thoroughly uninteresting, including the lead character.

The show has some budget, lots of source material, and a pleasant distance to any expectations. Same as the She-Ra remake. And everything that went well there is missing here. No passion, no sense of adventure, no conflict below the surface, no stakes, nothing to say, no interest to take a risk or do anything except collecting a paycheck.
But if the people making the show obviously don't care - why should I?

And I want to add: It feels a lot like the show tries to compensate its lack in depth by dabbling in really serious topics, like child abuse or mental illness. And my tip is: don't.

Hardly anyone can cope with such a person. 1: Batwoman comes over like a man. Too much emancipation. You shouldn't overdo it. 2. Catwoman is too arrogant, big-mouthed and ergo a totally unsympathetic part. You don't have to be surprised that you hate them. 3. She simply breaks into the Wayne house and behaves like the axe in the woods. Didn't the script give more?
4. The villain is female. Is every important role female? What is the background to this? Conclusion: A very anti-male series that wants to provoke and shoots too far over that. And did Batwoman have to be a tough lesbian? Nobody wants to see anything like that in the U.S.A. and where else.

The problem is a combination of really poor writing and really poor acting. Ruby Rose is the right person for the basics of this role. But the moment they try to include some emotional scenes it falls flat as she doesn't have the acting range for it.

Her character appears to be heavily based on CW's Oliver Queen. Similar gruff exterior. The main difference is that Stephen Amell portrays a character with gruff exterior and hints of hidden emotion. Ruby Rose portrays a character with gruff exterior and the hidden emotional fortitude of a paper bag. At times it feels like she just can't be bothered to pretend that she cares about her character or any of the characters.

Rose's portrayal aside, the story feels like it has been thrown together from a combination of the most boring bits of other DC TV Series and movies with the actors lines being written by a high school English student.

I love the CW DC shows so I'm holding out hope that this improves, but right now it just feels like a show that's DOA.

For those people who haven't seen it yet and are wondering if it's worth it, the answer is a big fat NO. This series is written awfully and 1/3 of the episodes are an insult to anyone who has even thought of working as a screenwriter. The acting is lacking, the special effects are gross and often insufficient. Narrative coherence (and logic in general) are almost absent. Even the soundtracks are ugly: repetitive and devoid of any semblance of originality.
I think the best episode is a 4/10. The series as an average is around 2/ 10.
For anyone who is a fan of Batman & Co. and hopes to find something pleasant and intriguing in this series, change your mind and avoid this TV series like the plague.

But I found this show too preaching and too much in your face, they've over crammed the story at the expense of any character development, not to mention the story was very flat & boring, I would've preferred a slow reveal instead of being bombarded like that. It's actually doing a disservice to the LGBTI Community & Woman. Lastly, why didn't Ruby Rose muscle up or beef up for this role, the fight scene's looked ridiculous, perhaps her ego has learnt a valuable lesson that putting on a vogue pose isn't enough for an Action Lead Role, either that, or she should apply for different types of roles, this whole thing is just stupid & very disappointing from a women's perspective. The best acting on the show comes from the main protagonist, and even she struggles. Ruby Rose was better as a deaf hit woman/bodyguard on John Wick. The fact that this is in the DC universe and so is an awesome show like Titans confuses me. Bruce Wayne was already shown in Titans. They can't even keep casting the same. Just cancel this show already. The fact that the critics gave it such high marks was a blinding alert on how bad it would be. And yes, I watched the 1st 10 episodes hoping it would redeem itself, but I realized I was asking too much. Expand

Based on the previews and some of the lead's behavior (i.e. pulling out of Comic-con at the last possible moment), you kind of knew this show was going to be bad.
However, they still managed to surprise me with how bad it actually ended up being.
To put it bluntly, watching Batwoman is physically uncomfortable.

What specifically is wrong with it...
1st, the writing is horrible. The dialog is unnatural and cringe inducing.
2nd, Ruby Rose cannot act. Not sure how she even got any acting job when calling her performance wooden is being charitable. She also has failed to master an American accent, which leaves you feeling embarrassed for her.
3rd, an 80 pound woman who could be taken down by a strong gust of wind is simply not believable as a superhero. While I understand willing suspension of disbelief, when you go beyond implausible to full blown ridiculousness no one is going to be able to buy into what your selling, even if they want to.
4th, this show is preachy. Personally, I would not care that she is a woman, nor a lesbian if the show wasn't constantly reminding you of those two facts over and over and OVER again. They also put in a whole lot a man bashing, which gets old as soon as it starts. Pretty sure subtlety is something the makers of this show could not spell, let alone define or employ.
5th, this show takes itself way too seriously, leaving something dark, heavy, and unpalatable. The only hope this show had for success was to inject levity or even to have gone for full on camp, but they opted instead to take everything super seriously. Alas, that makes the whole thing laughable, but not particularly funny.
Lastly, there is absolutely nothing new or unique about this show. Batwoman has been billed as something almost revolutionary, but instead it is nothing more than a cut and paste of better stories that have already been told before. I'm kind of curious to see the ratings drop as this moves forward because I can't fathom why anyone would give this a second chance, let alone keep watching throughout what I'm fairly positive will be its first and, mercifully, last season.

I was looking forward to this show but when batwoman got thrown out of the army because of "alleged homesexual conduct" and her girlfriend didn't... later she assaults the dude who's a security guard, the ONLY security guy who's tasked with making sure people dont find the batcave. He get assaulted and then he is her best friend, she just gets her suit, she just out of nowhere knows how to use all the gadgets and she beats the evil woman at the end of the episode that turns out to be her sister.
She beats grown ass men who are outnumbering her, while she is built like a twig and then she has a hard time beating up another twiggy woman at the end because we need a boss battle.
Holy **** delete it and start over guys please.

Critics are nothing but bloggers that have no real education nor experience to critique the art, production value or cinematic quality of a release. Whatever score that is derived is meaningless to the demographic that the creation is trying to target. The Audience is the true critic, and what the response here tells me is that the viewer is tired of characters being used to carry out a sexual role agenda. The Audience does not care about the sexual preference of a Superhero and is focused on the comic book style action and storylines that are synonymous with being a Superhero character. As long as garbage like this BATWOMAN continued to get released, the Audience will continue to voice extreme displeasure and realize that the Critics are also part of the problem. Do not waste your valuable time with this BATWOMAN tripe, nor with the spew these Critics spread. Expand

Decided to watch the show anyway thinking that it could at least be someting to laugh about, turns out it isnt.

What you have here is a show that exists solely to make a point about how a strong independant lesbian woman needs no man.
Everything is built around that, leading to a main character that comes across as a massive tryhard wannabe without any actual self-confidence or character and who constantly thinks she has to prove to everyone that she is stronger/better than them, especially stronger than any man.
But I guess thats just what a character needs to be so the average feminist can relate to her...

Its just bad, thats all there is to say.
