It's just plain boring. There is nothing wrong with the actor or character choices explicitly. The narrative is just not exciting and doesn't offer anything above other CW shows. It's the same formula, same drama, same everything just with darker lighting on the scenes. The creators clearly didn't have a unique vision of the show, but were "What if we do the same, with the only bat person we can have at the time?" The result is a resounding ... meh.

However, the show alters the origin story of the main character to justify her antagonistic stance towards Batman. There is no good reason why Batwoman needs to antagonize Batman in order to be her own character, and the original runs of Batwoman in Detective Comics prove it. But then again, you don't need to despise men in order to be a smart, independent woman, which the current progressive thinking seems to ignore. The writing is ok by CW standards, meaning you will need to disconnect your logic and / or common sense to enjoy the show. The acting is all over the place depending on the character. The kids are terrible. Ruby Rose is not bad at all, but some of her lines are simply ridiculous, and I don't think she has the experience to compensate that with a masterful delivery or the power to demand a change to the script. If you are not a fundamentalist from any of the ideological factions making this show their private battlefield, I would recommend watching a couple more episodes. If it becomes heavy-handed with the identity politics, cut your loses and watch something else. Or, if you are interested in the original character, read Detective Comics issues 854 to 863. My understanding is that they are sold together as a graphic novel for 25 bucks, so you don't have to break the bank. And they are good. Expand

Nowhere near the abomination other reviewers suggest, mostly because of perceived "wokeness," but still only average at it's best.

Also, slight note: Kate Kane's Batwoman was always gay, Batgirl is the straight one.

No better or worse than the rest of the CW Superhero shows. Ruby Rose is excellent but the rest of the cast is just going through the motions. Ruby Rose is excellent but the rest of the cast is just going through the motions. The scripts for the first 3 eps were all pretty week and the direction is consistently flat. This should've been been produced with adult content for the DC streaming service as it REQUIRES most graphic scenes to bring it to life. Expand

That said, it feels rushed, joyless and by the numbers. Bad numbers. I like Alice and Mary, and the show probably should be exclusively about them, since everyone else is thoroughly uninteresting, including the lead character.

The show has some budget, lots of source material, and a pleasant distance to any expectations. Same as the She-Ra remake. And everything that went well there is missing here. No passion, no sense of adventure, no conflict below the surface, no stakes, nothing to say, no interest to take a risk or do anything except collecting a paycheck.
But if the people making the show obviously don't care - why should I?

And I want to add: It feels a lot like the show tries to compensate its lack in depth by dabbling in really serious topics, like child abuse or mental illness. And my tip is: don't.
